Following my earlier trip report this year (February) on an Egyptair domestic service, it was time to have another flight (again on the Cairo-Sharm El Sheikh route) but this time my final destination would be the beautiful and laid back Bedouin resort of Dahab.
So on arrival to Cairo 4 days before the Dahab trip I, along with 2 mates, popped into the Egyptair Ticket Office in the Hilton Nile Hotel. Things didn’t look well to start off with, as that week the World Economic Forum (20-22 May 2006) was being held in Sharm El Sheikh and all international and domestic flights to SSH were full despite the use of wide bodies and extra charters. Egyptair were operating 7 flights to Sharm on the day we wanted (06:00 (A342), 06:45 (A321), 09:00 (A342), 12:15 (A342), 14:00 (B777), 18:00 (B735), 23:05 (B777)). Ideally we wanted to get on the earliest flight possible, but seats were only available on the 14:00 and 18:00 services, so we went for the former. Though it meant loosing half a day in Dahab it also meant flying the B777 on the 40 minute flight…great. I tried to get a F or C seat but I was told they were full in F and overbooked in C. For our return service we got the flight we wanted (at 07:45 on an A321) – I would be happy to write a TR on the return sector if people want.
Route: Cairo International (CAI/HECA) to Sharm El Sheikh Ophira Airport (SSH/HESH)
Flight Number: Egyptair MS123
Equipment: B777-266ER
Registration: SU-GBY ( http://airfleets.net/ficheapp/plane-b777-32630.htm )
Flight time: 0 hours 55 minutes
Gate Departure Scheduled/Actual 14:00/14:12 Local Time
Gate Arrival Scheduled/Actual 14:55/14:51 Local Time
Seat: 48C (assigned) 48K (actual)
So the day finally came and we arrived at the airport (CAI’s T1 Domestic Hall) at 13:05 (quite late). We had to show our tickets to enter the terminal and passed through X-ray before proceeding through to check-in. At the time there were 3 other MS flights to HRG, LXR and a last minute extra SSH (A320) flight in addition to our service (making a total of 8 flights to Sharm that day). We queued up for 10 minutes, and were assigned seats 48ABC. We headed to gate 10 where boarding had already started. CAI’s T1 was completely renovated in 2004 so the facility is clean and modern but no airbridges are installed, so you’re bussed to/from the aircraft.
We finally boarded our shuttle bus at around 13:35 and were given a ‘tour’ of the airport as headed to our B777 on the eastern side of the airport (next to the VIP terminal-Hall 4).
Royal Jordanian A310 (JY-AGN) just arrived from AMM on flight RJ501
Photos of CAI’s recently renovated T1 used primarily by Egyptair and selected Middle Eastern carriers.

On arrival to our B777 I got a nice surprise when I noticed a B727-200 next to our aircraft belonging to Iraqi operator, Tigris Air, (there aren’t any photos of them on our DB). They operate 2x weekly flights on the Baghdad-Cairo-Baghdad route in addition to Iraqi Airways’s flights on the route. Due to our proximity to the aircraft I couldn’t get a full shot. Interesting livery though… Front Section Back Section
Getting off the bus I managed to get a couple of shots of Egyptair’s youngest B777, SU-GBY:
View of wing (note the security officer under the wing – high security presence due to the WEF)
The mighty P&W engine
Side shot just before boarding
We were greeted by 2 smiling male attendants then walked to our seats.
Egyptair have a 3-4-2 configuration on all their B777s, which is a great way to accommodate different sized groups. As we began settling down in our seats (48ABC), a Dutch gentleman came to my seat and asked if we were willing to swap seats with him and his family (wife and young toddler). They were sitting in seats 48HJK but were split by the aisle between seats H and J. Without any hesitation we agreed to swap to help the family. In fact it worked out well as we now had 2 aisle seats and a window compared to a window, middle and aisle.
At around 13:55 boarding was complete and the captain welcomed us on board, but judging by the activities outside my window, cargo was still being loaded in the cargo hold. Flight attendants then came around giving out hot towels and helped a few passengers with their seats.
View from my window (just under the wing 2 business jets can be seen outside the new VIP Terminal (Hall 4)).
Push back finally commenced at 14:12 and we began our 2 minute taxi to runway 5L (which is the shortest runway at CAI). The safety demo also began at this point.
Flaps deployed
As we turned onto the runway the take off roll began and after a mere 15-20 seconds we were airborne.
View of CAI shortly after take off
Soon after the captain made another P/A giving us more flight information. Our final cruising altitude would be 25,000ft and the flight would last 35-40 minutes. He then continued by saying that some turbulence might be experienced over the Sinai desert due to the rise of hot air over the area at that time of the year.
15 minutes into the flight the cabin crew began the meal service. The service was fast and efficient considering the limited time available. The in-flight entertainment was shown on the overhead screens and showed a programme promoting Egypt (business and tourism wise)
We were served two small baguettes (cheese in one and beef in the other) with some salad, mango/orange juice, a chocolate cake and tea/coffee with metal cutlery. Quite substantial on such a short hop in Y class…
The clearing up process started soon after and as the attendant removed our trays I asked him how full our flight was to which he replied ‘Only 3 seats are empty’ (which meant 316 passengers were on board). I had a couple more questions but thought I’d better leave him finish his job.
We began our approach into Sharm El Sheikh Airport at around 14:40 and passengers sitting on the starboard side were given great views of the resort and the Red Sea. The overhead screens turned to the nose camera giving us a pilot’s view of the approach and runway.
The prime Red Sea resort of Sharm El Sheikh
Touchdown was very smooth and surprisingly the thrust reversers weren’t used (relying on braking and spoilers)
Taxing off runway 4R
We finally came to a stand still at 14:51 (4 minutes ahead of schedule). There were only 2 other aircraft on the apron at the time (2 Eurofly A320s).
As we de-boarding I managed to get this shot of the front economy section. Even though the airline doesn’t have PTVs in Y class, the comfortable seats and spacious legroom make up for it.
As we exited the aircraft 2 flight attendants wished us a good time in Sharm El Sheikh. As Egyptair were the official airline of the World Economic Forum they also gave us an Egyptair WEF magazine with information on the event and the resort itself including some discount coupons for local attractions.
View of the front exit used by F and C passengers who were escorted to the terminal using a fleet of black Mercs
View over the wing of the brand new terminal at the airport (opens July 2006)
View from the shuttle bus
As we entered the terminal, the bags were already on the carousal and in a matter of minutes we were out of the terminal and in a taxi taking us to Sharm El Sheikh Bus Station (from there we took a coach on the hour long journey to Dahab).
In our 40 minute wait at the station I spotted the following aircraft landing at SSH; Swiss A320, Eurofly A320, 2x Hapagfly B738s, Blue Panorama B752, Thomson B752, Monarch A300 and a Livingston A332.
The next few days were spent in the gorgeous Bedouin “backpacker’s” resort of Dahab. Despite the events that took place there in late April, the resort was fairly busy and definitely made for a memorable and unforgettable trip. The diving and the local people make it a top holiday destination.
View outside our ‘hotel’
Back to Egyptair, I really can’t fault them. The service and punctuality were top notch. Service marks (out of 10):10 Flight on time marks (out of 10):10 Comfort marks (out of 10):10 Value marks (out of 10):8 (fares are quite expensive)
As I said at the start of the report, if you’d like me to post a TR on the return flight to CAI (on an A321) then I’d be happy too.
I hope you all enjoyed the report and all feedback, opinions and questions are welcome!

Excellent report Horus.
Egyptair seem to operate like some of the Asian carriers ie - operating long haul aircraft for short haul flights. Is there such a demand that requires the use of A340 and B777 on these shorter sectors everyday or is it only when there is things like the WEF on? And also the service for such a short flight is excellent. All that food for a 40 minute flight is great and the crew must have very little time to serve all 316 passengers.

Glad you didn't get blown up in Dahab although saying that....
Also, get your lazy ass around to doing the A321 trip report. I like looking through your reports for gramatical errors of which I can rub in your face! Haha.

Egypt Air continues to impress me with their inflight catering , a catering service that leaves North American passengers jealous . On N.American carriers if you get a smile from the F/A on such a short flight you will be dancing from happiness let alone the food service .
It is good to hear from you , i was wondering where have you been hiding .

The photo you posted of Cairo Airport doesn't look like the same crumbling dump of an airport I traveled from in 1997. Did they open a new terminal or something?
The photo from Dahab looks amazing, I love the landscape. If you've got anymore, could you post them ?

Cheers GCDEG. Egyptair use long haulers on the 2 trunk domestic routes; CAI-LXR and CAI-SSH. Both routes are served with at least 5-6 daily flights mainly using A32Xs but at least one daily service is with a A332 or B772 (more during the peak season). Up until March the AB6 were heavily used on domestic sectors, but since their retirement the A332 and B772s have had to fill in the vacuum.
And yeah the service is a tad better then what you'd get with Euro carriers on their domestic flights.
How is the situation in Dahab now? I do hope they recovered from the recent events.
Thanks Aleksander. Dahab is recovering. According to the hotel manageress I spoke to Dahab's market relies on visitors who regularly visit the resort rather than 'first timers' which has cushioned the drop in numbers. But she said the summer will be quieter than usual due to a) summer being the traditional low season for Dahab b) the repercussions of the April incidents and c) the FIFA World Cup. But on a positive note she said the hotel was already 50% full from September onwards (which is impressive considering it's still 4 months away).

It is great to have such a big plane on such a short flight, reminds me of my DUS-FRA flights on the A300s of LH.
The catering is fantastic for a domestic 40 minute flight, on a similar short flight on LH within Germany you would only get a drink, nothing more.
Dank Sabena332. I've flown LH a few times in the last couple of months. On the LHR/MAN-FRA/MUC/STR routes this is an example of what we were served and on one occasion I flew FRA-IST and got this. Decent but not as good as MS

Dank Philipp. Glad you enjoyed the report. Most times I've flown Egyptair on domestic flights I've also got A320s and B735s. But if you book domestic flights with them yourself (rather than through a travel agent) you can almost guarantee getting a long hauler on the CAI-LXR and CAI-SSH routes.

Merci Nico.
So you flew CAI-UVL? Pretty damn lucky. The airline dropped New Valley from their schedule in 2004 before I had a chance to fly it. What aircraft was used on the route? Hi, yes I did a Nile Cruise in 2002, from Luxor to Aswan, and visited Cairo and Abu Simbel as well . As you know, Egypt is a very popular tourist destination in Spain. Even in Luxor, visiting the Karnak and Luxor temples, I had the feeling that I was in Spain (sooo many people from there).
I flew MAD-CAI on a B777, CAI-LXR on a B747-300, ASW-CAI on a B737-500 and back to Madrid (CAI-MAD) again on a B747-300 (all with Egyptair).
On the way back three flights bound for Madrid left CAI within an hour (end of Easter holidays)!!

Excellent report Horus.. Well done...
I flew SSH -CAI last December and I am glad I did because unfortunately I took a bus between CAI and SSH on the way down which turned out to be an absolute nightmare. It took about 8 hours with two 30 minute breaks and five police controls each of which took at least 20 minutes. The bus had no seat pitch whatsoever. But the flight was just fine. More than fine actually...
And a small warning to non-Egyptians who want to take domestic flights in Egypt. Buy your domestic flights from your home country and not from Egypt. There is a huge price discrimination in the country. Abroad they sell the tickets very cheaply so they can attract tourists to their country but once you are there they do not care anymore. In IST, when I called Egyptair office, I was quoted 103 Euros for CAI-SSH-CAI. I thought it was a good deal but decided to buy it in CAI hoping to get a better deal. When I went to their office at the airport in Cairo, they quoted 165 Euros for a return ticket. That is why I ended up taking a bus. But as I explained, the bus trip was such a nightmare that I HAD to take a flight back to CAI. And I ended up paying 108 Euros one way. So just be careful. BUY YOUR DOMESTIC FLIGHT IN ADVANCE WHEN YOU ARE HOME.
Do you agree with this Horus?
P.S: I was on an A 320 (I think it was Alexandria)

If you visited CAI in 2003 you wouldn't recognise it today, let alone 1997. No a new terminal hasn't opened but T1 was completely revamped and extended in 2004. Terminal 3 was due to open June 2007 but TAV (Turkish contractor) seems to be running severely behind schedule and I wouldn't be surprised if there is a 6 month delay.
Quoting AirxLiban (Reply 14): The photo from Dahab looks amazing, I love the landscape. If you've got anymore, could you post them Wink?
Dahab is a beauty. Not as developed as Sharm or Hurghada and has a great Bedouin feel to it. I'll try to dig out some photos but almost all of them are of us having a good time...
I agree that in Egypt, Egyptair (as do many other establishments) have different prices for Egyptians and Non-Egyptians but I wouldn't say it's discrimination but more because the average Egyptian simply couldn't afford high airfares so they are subsidised, while Non-Egyptians (tend) to have more disposable incomes. It simply isn't fair nor realistic to have Egyptian residents paying such high prices as no one will use the service. Having said that the Egyptian fares are not always as cheap as you may think.
Now about your other point I don't agree that it's always best to by your tickets outside the country as they can be substantially more expensive, e.g. In the UK booking CAI-SSH-CAI will set you back around £135 but if you booked it in Egypt it would set you back 1200LEs (= £115).

I wrote this comment based on my own experience and what my Egyptian friend told me (he is an MS F/A by the way).
Good one I realized many Egyptians have Turkish relatives and many knows a few Turkish words at least. As a Turkish, I was very welcome in Egypt. But everyone, I mean every single person, thought I was Egyptian (until I wore my earring then I became Italian) so I even paid the local entrance fee to the Egyptian Museum etc

I remember now. It was St Catherine
P.S: I have swam in the Indian Ocean (Phuket, Maldives), The Med (obviously)Atlantic Ocean (Florida, St Martin) and in the Pacific (LA, SAN) and I can say that the Red Sea is by far the best in terms of marine life. I am definitely going back to SSH but this time I will stay in a 5 star hotel for sure
