Over this thread and the next few I will talk about the 9 flights I took during my Recent trip to Thailand.

31 May 2006
QF 1444
Bombardier Dash8-Q300

I arrived at the airport about 6:45. Check in was quick and simple. The Qantas QuickCheck self service is so quick and painless. It seems tho, that the check in agents have been replaced and are now only there to assist with baggage.

Boarding began on time at 7:50 with the flight due to depart at 8:25. It took my seat and began to settle in for the short 50 minute hop to Sydney. The passenger who was seated next to me wondered if she could move to another seat. But if she was after more room there wasn't going to be much avaliable as every row had atleast two people, one on each side. We took off to the north before turning right to head towards Sydney.

Soon after take off, the crew quickly moved into action serving a light refreshment which consisted of King Island Camenbert Cheese, Sun Dried Tomato Dip with crackers and a water tub. The crew also came around with a complementary wine service. I found this service to be quite nice and much better then the last time I flew this route when the refreshment consisted of Rice Cracker Mix and Vista Mix. I was also feeling rather thirsty so after downing the water I had alredy been given I promptly requested some more, with which the crew were only two happy to ablige.

After collecting all the rubbish we decended over the city where there were good views of the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. We turned right and and landed from the east stopping before the main runway giving a quick taxi to the domestic terminal where buses were waiting. By the time I had walked through the terminal and reached baggage claim, bags were already appearing and I quickly found mine. All in all a good pleasent flight.

SQ 220
Boeing 747-400

After waking at just after 4 to get ready to catch the 5am shuttle to the airport, I arrived at the international terminal at around 5:15 am. The check in line had a massive number of people. Yes.. there were all of two people in the que ahead of me. Probably the shortest international check in que I have ever delt with. Mind you it was only 5:20am. Once it was my turn to be checked in I enquired as to how full the flight was. The agent told me that it was fairly light, so I asked if I could have a row of seats to myself. Which I was given.

The next 40 minutes were spent wondering around the terminal looking for something that was open. All that was open was McDonalds and check in counters. I was feeling a bit hungry so I quickly grabbed a Sausage McMuffin and filled out my departing passenger card while I waited for passport control to open.

After passing through passport control and security I made my way to the gate where the 747 was waiting for us. From memory it was the same gate that I used last time I flew overseas, which was on SQ. Boarding began on time and the row I was seated in was amongst the first of the economy to be boarded. I waited till after the door had closed and take off before I decided to get comfy in my three seats. But while I was waiting for this to happen I took a photo of a JAL 744 which had just arrived at the gate next to us.

Soon after push back began and we taxied down towards Botany Bay as take off toady would be to the north. I sat back and waited for the thrust of the 744 to push me back into my seat. I wasn't dissappointed. We climbed for about 10 - 15 minutes before the seat belt signal was switched off and headed towards southern Queensland. It was not long after that the crew began the breakfast service. Today I had the omlete with susage. I can't remember what the other option was, but I think it may have been some kind of Chinese dish.

It was a fairly nice breakfast. Once the crew cleared the trays I settled into some viewing. I watched Date Movie and Firewall during the flight. Through out the flight I continued to track the flight on the screen on the seat next to mine watching it and the movie at the same time.

I took a few shots over southern Queensland and the Northern Territroy.

Lunch was served over Indonesia, the options were Thai red curry or Creamy Chicken. I chose the chicken. It was very nice, but sorry, no picture. After the mess from lunch was cleared, I asked for a pack of playing cards and a pen. To my delight I was given two packs of playing cards!.

It was not long until we began our decent into Singapore. There were a few storms around Singapore so the ride in was a little bumpy. We flew between huge cluminous clouds. It felt like we were flying in a canyon or something, quite an experince. After a few more bumps and drops that left the stomoch at the ceiling, we broke through the clouds exposing the Singapore Skyline and the big beast landed softly. Thankfully we landed on the T2 side of the airport so the taxi to the terminal was fairly short. Every other time I've landed in SIN its been on the other side so the taxi to T2 and even T1 has been fairly long.

I disembarked from the plane and was left to wonder the terminal for four hours before my next flight to Bangkok.

1 June 2006
Boeing 777-200(ER?)

After wondering and looking through all of the duty free stores and even venturing over to T1 I headed down peir F to gate F8. The last gate!. There I boarded a 777. There seemed to be a large tour group on this flight and In the last row there was this Australian Boagan trying to take someone elses seat so he could be next to his "mate". These american guys would sit in the seat next to me, which was the second last row and the last row. The one sitting next to me would be begin to take the piss out of this bogan which I helped in.

After take off, dinner was served. It was some kind of noodles and chicken, which was quite nice. One thing I noticed however was that the way the service was conducted was different to the SYD-SIN route. The FA's would take the carts to the beginning of the Y cabin and work backwards. However they would have two carts on each side. It seemed like an awkward and unproductive way of doing things as the pax right at the back, IE took forever to get served. This was really the only complaint I had. Well not really a complaint.

After eating dinner and watching a few TV shows we decended into Bangkok. Before we got to far into the decent I asked for some more playing cards. We arrived in BKK on time and taxied to our gate, which was fairly quick, which I would later find out was pretty much always the case at BKK.

Once I walked down the jet way and into the terminal, I thought, "What a dump" the place looked run down and the sooner they start using the new airport the better. I passed through immigration quickly and got my bags and headed out into a new adventure.

In summary, SQ service was very good as usual. However I do question the style of service on the shorter routes. As for Qantas, the short hope on the dash 8 operated by Eastern always seem to be good. I last flew the SYD-CBR route on mainline and it left alot to be desired.

The guy was just a fool and it was fun to make fun of him. Being and Australian myself, he's the kind of person I would go out of my way to avoid. Its probably a social class thing.
