Hello All,

I travel every so often to PDX to visit the old man. Usually it involves three segments, a major detour, and an entire day of travelling. When I heard about this redeye, I was hugely excited. Boy, was it ever a timesaver. Well, here goes! This is my first trip report, and I got a deluxe photobucket account for you people, so you damn well better enjoy it!  silly

US Airways Express (Piedmont) Flight 4592
SBY-PHL
Depart: 6:20P
Duration: about 30 min. (can't remember)
Aircraft: DeHavilland Canada Dash-8 300
Reg: N342EN
June 4, 2006

Salisbury has a REALLY small terminal, so it really wasn't that exciting. I make this trip every couple of months, so it was even less exciting. Big grin

These dash-8s have to be one of my absolute favorite aircraft. Takeoff just always feels more of an event than it does on the big jets. I feel more connected to the experience, and it really embodies the whole idea of flying to me. It's magic. BTW, I usually have a -100 variant for this route so this -300 was a real treat!

We got underway and were served the standard half-can of soda. I expected pretzels, but peanuts were given instead. I was disappointed frankly, as I had gotten to like the pretzels and those nuts just aren't as filling. We had some mild chop on the approach to PHL, much to my delight.  Wink

The standard post-landing gate announcements were read by the FA. I don't know about everyone else, but to me these are completely pointless. Don't people read their tickets anymore? Anyway, the FA decided to announce the gates with their radio equivalents (alpha, bravo). The thing is though, she used proper letters for "C" and "F". I mentioned the significance of these on my way out the door, and she responded with a confused scowl. Too bad I didn't get a picture. I left the plane feeling like a typical A.netter.

This being Philadelphia, I got "F'd in the A". Yes, it really is as painful as the expression would suggest. It involves taking a shuttle bus from one terminal to another, which is much worse than it sounds. I had some pizza at Sbarro, and was on my way to the gate.

US Airways (America West) Flight 302
PHL-PDX
Depart: 8:30P
Duration: 5h 40min
Aircraft: Airbus A320-200
Reg: N "haven't the foggiest idea" AW
June 4, 2006

This still being Philadelphia, I was subjected to the crummiest gate area this side of the Mississippi. It really is that bad. Not much to say here; I just waited my turn and boarded.

SCORE!!! Not only did I get an exit row, but I got an entire row to myself. The aircraft was about 60% loaded. The flight was pretty standard stuff if you've ever flown US before, though the crew was all male. The movie was "Firewall" with an ageing Harrison Ford playing a totally unconvincing role as a computer guy. There were two drink services, both served with those peanuts I now hate. I asked one of the FAs whether I could visit the cockpit after landing, and he happily obliged.

We landed, and I visited the flight deck as promised. The captain was very kind, and put on all the emergency lights for me. "This would be a bad day", he said. Other than that, it was an akwardly quiet visit. I didn't have anything he wanted to say, and I guess he didn't either. I was pretty tired I suppose, but I still wish I would have been more talkative. Ah well, there's always next time. Thanks anyway, anonymous Captain!  bigthumbsup

Interesting side note:
On the way back to PHL, the aircraft assigned was in the new c/s. What a treat!

Anyway, thanks for reading. I do hope you enjoyed my first report on A.net!  biggrin

Wonderful!!! Greatest report I have ever seen. This opinion was in NO way influenced by your "threat" at the begining of this report HAHA. Seriously, nice report and with all the bad rep of PHL, I am glad I can catch my WN flts out of BWI.

Good first report - Thanks...

PHL really does blow. The mayor should be embarrased every time he steps foot inside it (unless he uses G-5's at a regional...).

I go back once a year to catch a few baseball games (PDXtoPHL) - haven't yet flown this flight - other than the time saving aspect for you, is there anything you can say to either recommend this flight or US Air in general to a person who has yet to fly the airline?

Thanks again.

Hmmmm.....Why do exit row seats seem to be so popular here among A.netters?

Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

They're a good company, and I would wholeheartedly recommend them. The F/As are pretty typical compared to other American carriers. Most of the time they're either old or male, but they're almost always kind and courteous. The food's not much, but it's fairly standard for a domestic flight these days. CLT, LAS, and PHL hubs are in pretty sorry shape, but that should change with time.

Another thing I like about US is the fleet they have. It's predominately Airbus so in general, your trip will be more comfortable. Not to mention that many of their aircraft are pretty new. One more thing: If you're careful to book the A330, long-haul is quite nice as well.

Hope that helped.  biggrin

Thanks! I'll be flying SEA-PHL-FCO in about two months...not sure if I'll have to take the shuttle bus or not. I've never flown US or through PHL, so it will be an experience for me. I will post a trip report when I get back.

Actually you won't have to endure the shuttle bus (or being F'd in the A), as you're not coming in on a regional flight.

Here's a tip: The food on US is typically poor, so you'll want to get dinner in PHL. Personally, I recommend the "Asian Chao" or "Japanese (something)". I can't remember the name, but it's an asian place in the international terminal. It's pretty good, pretty filling, and didn't make me sick. And that's saying something.  Smile

You are in for a treat however, because US uses their A330 on the PHL-FCO route. It's a lovely aircraft with an even lovelier AVOD system. Definitely worlds away from their 767 fleet.

Anyway, enjoy your trip! I look forward to your report.

Great news...a shuttle bus I can handle, as I'm used to taking a bus everyday as it is for my commute into work. Getting F'd in the A though is something I have no interest in at all, and I don't just mean the A terminal at PHL!  Smile

Yeah, I've read a lot of good reviews on the A330 that US flies on this site. Looking forward to it...first time flying on that plane. I love the UA 763 and 772's, so it will be an interesting comparison!  Smile

Close....it's King of Pizza. They've got some locations around the Del. Valley. I go to the one in Cherry Hill NJ all the time, it's delicious.

Nice trip report...I'd love to try to the PHL-PDX leg sometime soon.

Judging by the identification plate in your cockpit photo, I think it would be safe to say that you were on N642AW.

That said, they now have a direct shuttle bus from F to A, so it's not nearly as bad as it used to be.

I completely agree. As it's my home airport, I'm not bugged by it too much, but it is alot worse than many airports arround the country.

I was recently on a flight that arrived almost an hour late, scheduled 6:20AM, arrived at the gate 7:20AM and people were literally running out of the jetway to go make their 7:30 connection in Terminal F.

A quick question though, does anyone know when HP/US is going to be updating/standardizing their interiors?
