MIA-CLT-FRA-LUX On USAirways And Luxair

The return trip:

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006
Miami (MIA) - Charlotte (CLT)
Flight no.: US210
Aircraft: Boeing 737-400
Seat: 1C First
Dep: 12:45
Arr: 14:45 (14:35)

My Airport Transportation dropped me in MIA at 11:00 and I went to the US Airways Counter. I looked for a Star Alliance Gold or First Class Check-In but there was only one (!) row except those for the automated Check-In. I waited in line for about 15min . I gave the agent my Ticket and passport and told her to Check my luggage all the way to LUX. She then told me that she was almost sure she wouldn't be able to do that since Luxair isn't a Star Alliance partner. I told her that the US Airways agent in RSW in April was able to check it all the way and that it has nothing to do with Star. She looked at the tickets again and told me that my flight from FRA to LUX wouldn't depart on the same day so she wouldn't be able to it anyway. I showed her on my print out that I would arrive in FRA on Thursday and that it was unpossible for me to depart to LUX on Wednesday. She told me that she had to see someone and would be right back. It took about 5 to 10 minutes and she came back with a note and told me that she would be able to check it all the way to LUX now. She finally gave me my Boarding pass for MIA-CLT. Security was really empty compared to the F concourse in MIA where LH departs. Since I still had about 30 minutes till boarding I went to Starbucks in H. Boarding was beginning at 12:20 and I tried to get on board early to stow my cabin luggage. I hoped for an empty seat next to me but again First was full compared to what my travel agent told me two days before. But I have learned about US Airways UPG's by now. The cabin was really smelly (lavatory) and dirty. I was wondering if US gets cleaning crews on board while on the ground? The FA came around and took coats/jackets and offered pre departure drinks. We pushed back from the Gate approximitly 5 minutes early but had to wait some time before takeoff. We took off at about 12:55 and you had a wonderfull view over Miami Beach. In flight the FA offered drinks and snacks again. I don't know about the age of US 734 but some parts of the interior wall were tapped togther and the overall appearence of the cabin compared to the A319 was horrible. We arrived in CLT at about 2:35 pm. After arriving in the Terminal I went to the big US Club again and asked for my Boarding pass to FRA and for a seat in row 1 but the lady told me that the F Cabin was full already. This time she also gave me a drink voucher without asking about my age. By the time I went to Concourse D I saw that LH brought an Airbus A340-600 that day which wasn't parked at the Gate (maybe because of it's size) and they had stairs on the left side at L1, L2 and L4. US and LH used D11 and D12 and both were looking for Pax to fly 1 or 2 days later since they overbooked both flights.

After I stowed my cabin luggage and the FA took my coat she came around and offered pre departure drinks again O-Juice or Champagne but she told me that it wasn't real Champagne until after takeoff but you tasted that anyway. They had three different German magazines (I don't know about the others since I was only for the German maga.) and some International newspapers. They came around the cabin with the overnight kit and the menu which was the same in September or October last year. We left the Gate about 20 minutes late and taxied for take off. We left CLT at about 17:05 but the Captain told us that we would still arrive in FRA ahead of schedule. After reaching altitude the FA began the service with hot towles, some snack (nuts) and the drinks. I had Champagne again and the very friendly FA told me it was real Champagne now and showed me the bottle. I told her that on my way over they only had sparkling wine for the whole flight she excused and told me she would try to save one bottle and give it to me before landing. I was really surprised because the only time that happened to me before was on LH First. For dinner they offered a Salat with fried greek cheese as a starter. The three main courses were: a filet of beef with a peppercorn crust, a mediterranean chicken and grilled shrimps with scallop shell and grilled tomatos which
I had. The salat was really good especially the dressing. The main course was really tasty but compared to the flight to CLT it was rather small it had 3 Shrimps and 3 scallops but the taste made it up. On that flight the IFE was working without a need to reset it but I had to read all about the World Cup so I wasn't watching any film. I don't had the dessert but it was New York Style Cheese Cake and Cheese. Instead I had a decaf Cappucino and Baileys on the rocks. After they took the table linen I reclined my seat and went to sleep. I woke up at about 6am german time and had a Coffee and O-Juice. Shortly the Captain or F/O came on and told us that we would arrive in FRA at about 06:55. Before landing the FA's collected the headphones, came around with Pralinés and handed out the jackets. I got mine with a white plastic bag and the FA told me that they had the Champagne left. I said thank you and she asked who long I had to wait for my Connecition. After landing in FRA which was before schedule (!). We taxied and parked on an outside position infront of Terminal 2 in FRA. But they had enough busses and we were brought to the Terminal 1 C arrivals. After arriving in the Terminal I went to International LH Senator Lounge in A (A60) via SkyTrain.
I like that Lounge very much because it is rather small and not too crowded especially in the morning. I had still had some time left because Boarding was due to start at 8:50am at A42 but I still had to got to through the security again and the lady told me to leave at 8:25am the latest. Since I had to go back to A1 for Schengen security screening and then to A42. I went to the showers but they had a waitling list and the lady told me it would take about 30-45 min. I went back to the lounge and had breakfast with cereals and rolls. They offered speciallities from different countries which participate in the World Cup in Germnay. By the time I was called for the shower it was already 8:05am and I went to the front desk and told the lady I was't able to go anymore because of my connection she told that it wouldn't be a problem and she would call Lufthansa Betreuungsdienst and they would come and pick me up at 8:35. So I had enough time left. When I came back from the Shower the lady with the electric cart was already waiting and she brought me to the elevators for the Schengen level and told me that somebody else would pick me up after the Schengen Security. So I just had to walk from the A exit to security. I went through securtiy really quick and really somebody was waiting and brought me all the way to A42 where we arrived just at the time Luxair and Lufthansa anounced boarding.

Aircraft: Boeing 737-500 LX-LGP Château de Bourglinster
Seat: 1C Business
Dep: 09:20
Arr: 10:00

Boarding was announce at 8:55 and flight seemed to be pretty full in Y but rather empty in C. After boarding the "Luxair Chef de Cabine" came around took the coats and handed out refreshing towels. They offered newspapers from Germany, Luxembourg and France. In the end 2 LH FAs came onbord and they had Y Boardings passes but the Luxair FA told them to take a seat in C since it wouldn't be full this morning. This time I was lucky I had the entire row for myself. I taxied from the Gate at about 9:20 on time. But we had to wait till 9:35 for takeoff. The flight deck told us that the flight time to LUX would be 18-20min this morning. Shortly after takeoff the Captain announced "crew start service" and they handed out the breakfast trays with 2 danishs and 2 rolls one with a french cheese and the other one with ham the entire breakfast was really. They offered Coffee (really good with LG), O-Juice, Water, Coke and Champagne. I had Coffee and Water. The service that the Luxair FA perform on this short flight is always unbelievable. They also asked if you would like to have a refill. They had 6 rows of C-Class that morning with 14 PAX (including the LH FA's). They collected the trays and came around with Pralinés. Shortly after that the Captain once again anounced "Cabin Crew take your seats we're landing shortly". We landed in LUX at exatly 09:54 and taxied to Parking a bus took us to the terminal. I only had to wait for some minutes for my luggage but it was rather quick at least for LUX.

US was ok again on this trip and by know I know what to expect and the Envoy seats in the A330 a really good. I would like to try UA Explus from ORD to RSW the next time because they only have TED to MIA. Has somebody had a good experience with UA Explus?

Yes! Highly recommend UA ExPlus! The leg room in F in phenomenal, especially on the CRJ.

I've flown ExPlus in the CRJ700 and the E70. Exceptional planes and seats.

Thanks. After reading the reports I think Explus to RSW is definitly better then TED to MIA.

Nice trip report. Thanks for sharing it. Not to big on US to cross the pond, but its not a bad product in Envoy.
