LX 448 GVA to LCY – Business Class (C)

After a nicey 2-hour drive from High Elbonia to Geneva, I made my way towards the numerous LX check-in counters. In GVA there are no flight-dedicated counters as any LX counter can check-in any LX flight.

Being on an economy ticket and not yet being used at LX being a * member, I first went towards the Economy class counters.
The queues there were as long as my…, hence I went to the LX First Class check-in, being * Gold.
Check-in was fast and efficient and I got my first surprise of the day; my 3F seat (checked-in online the day earlier, heheh) transformed itself into a nicey 1F boarding pass !

I then went through passport control towards the LX lounge (after checking out the LH lounge), which had a nice selection of sandwiches, snacks and drinks as well as a couple of web-connected computers. I had only a little time to have a quick snack and drink and it was already time to go to the boarding area.

After a little queueing at the security check there was very little walking to do to get to the gate as the aircraft was parked in A1  , an Avro RJ-100 registered HB-IXK (I would have preferred a 332 or 343 but landing at LCY would have been…interesting).

I could not take any pictures as GVA has double windows between the boarding are and the aircraft, rhaa !

Boarding was on time and quite quick, C and *Golds being called for priority boarding.
The aircraft was a full house in both classes.
The seat pitch/width is the same in both classes, the only difference being the meal/drink service and the divider.
Row 1 is a bulkhead row therefore all bags had to go in the overhead bin.
The cabin (inflight) :

There was no welcome drink as on most other carriers, which I thought rather odd.
After pushback and the safety demonstration, we had a short taxi behind the SK Star-Alliance liveried MD-80 towards runway 05. After the aforementioned MD-80 had taken off it was our turn :

We flew runway heading for a little while before heading northwest towards Paris.
We were thus soon flying over Elbonia :

Hot towels were handed out and the first round of drinks started and I chose to start with a tomato juice. Strangely enough, no peanuts or other snacks were offered with the drinks.

Being in row 1 we were the first ones presented with lunch, which consisted of the following cold platter and dessert :
Smoked salmon with dill
Pasta with herbs, olives and sundried tomatoes
Marinated chicken breast
Choice of bread rolls with butter
Almond cake with chantilly
Coffee or tea

I chose champagne with the meal, which was a nice 33cl bottle of Piper Heidsieck :

I finished my lunch just as we were passing Paris and making our way towards Normandy. Here we are seen over the Beauce region :

After lunch and coffee/tea the purser passed through the cabin with a basket of nicey Swiss chocolates, which is a tradition on all LX flights.
The crew then started the duty-free service.

After an hour of flight we were above the French coastline :

A few minutes of flight at our cruising altitude of FL295 and the English coast was in view :

Soon after that we began our initial descent into London :

The 1F seat meant I could take pictures of the city unimpeded by the wing/engines :

As usual for LCY, there was no circling around Biggin Hill like for LHR and we were soon into our final approach :

My camera’s batteries died down just before landing (rhaa !) but I was on the wrong side anyways.

After a flyover of some of the City’s landmarks (like the Gherkin   ) we landed on time and with beautiful weather. We did a 180-degree turn on the runway and taxied towards gate 3 where we promptly disembarked, again due to being in the first row.

So in all a nice hour-and-a-half flight with a relatively good meal and excellent service. I however wonder how much one has to pay for a full-fare C ticket.
IMHO the same seat configuration (no blocked middle seat) than In Y would not warrant the extra money if I’m the one paying.

Score : 16/20

Comments and queries are welcome !

Thanks for the many pics of the 146s engines  wink

Seriously, I always enjoyed the Avros - thought they were a cool a/c . . . the pictures are great - clear day for flying.

You should send that picture of lunch being served on an RJ on a 1 hour flight to every US carrier . . . tell them to pay attention!!!

Great report!

Thanks

Nice report and good pics!

nice 33cl bottle of Piper Heidsieck

Piper Heidsieck:

Heidsieck & Co Monopole Blue Top

The Heidsiecks are hard to keep track of, as there are three champagne houses that have parts of the name: Charles Heidsieck, Heidsieck & Co Monopole, and Piper-Heidsieck, which are all offshoots of the original house of Heidsieck.

Monopole is made in huge factories with everything electronic whereas Charles makes a lot less and uses a bit of the new and a bit of the old.

AGREED.

for an 1.5 hour trip in america you would be lucky to get food, let alone a hot towel!

One thing about america First class is at least the seat is a bit nicer!
Anyways I think that American Airlines could learn about the food and serivce (i.e. hot towel) and European airlines could learn about bigger first class seats!
nice pictures!

Very good report! The pictures are great, and the food looks terrific for a short flight.

Looking forward to more reports!

Thanks for a very interesting report. I will be taking my first flight on a Swiss Avro 100 at Christmas so it was great to see some pics of the cabin. Also lovely pictures taken during the flight.  spin

Not entirely true. The big boards at the entrance do, in fact, assign a series of check-in counters for each flight, but it is not enforced. That's why it seems like there's no difference.

Great trip report! I flew this route last summer in the opposite direction. I assume you will do the same too. The takeoff from LCY is incredible, you'll see!

I don't know if you've ever flown LX long-haul, but it's fantastic. Try it, and also, I'm going to put a shameless self plus here, but check out my reports for JFK-ZRH and GVA-JFK in the TR forum!

i enjoy the AVROs, i have flown on one, and maybe its just me, the seats seemed bigger than the A330 i had just jumped the pond on.

1.5 hr on a US 'legacy carrier' domestic flight? With a few exceptions, you're lucky if you get a cup of luke warm water or juice thrown at you with a sneer by a snotty F/A.

Granted, I know that many of the flag carriers in Europe are now adopting a BOB policy too, but a report on cabin service like this shows how much more seriously those carriers take the satisfaction of their passengers than do the carriers we have to endure here in the US!

Ha Alex, all these trips ARE part of the move as it was cheaper (and more fun) to use my 50 kg+ baggage allowance and try out a lot or different haircraft rhaather than just shipping it all.

I flew back to DUB on a WX146 in Y, the trip report follows :

We take off (late as usual).
The seats are nasty, the aircraft is full.
We get served a choice of soft drinks/beer/wine.
Then we have a choice of either a chocolate muffin, crackers or shortbread.
We land.

Fantastic picture and good report ! I love those avros, even if the windows are bit low in the cabin. I also like the special sound they make when retracting/deploying flaps !

I got a hot towel on all of the AA domestic FC flights I've been on(not just trans-cons, but mid-cons, ex. BOS-STL).
