Actual Dep Time – a little late but not worth worrying about.

I arrived at the L Smith Terminal quite early. I don’t really like the Smith terminal at DTW. It is definitely the very poor red headed stepchild relation to the McNamara Terminal, dated, old and distinctly dank. But with relatively few passengers about security was a bit of a breeze. Wasn’t too impressed either with the self checkin at US Airways as I got paper boarding passes and they didn’t feel too substantial and could be lost quite easily. However I also understand that US needs to cut corners and save the money where they can so it’s no big deal I guess if it keeps them in the air and people employed.

I was at my gate with plenty to spare so I went for a nosey about to see what was about on the field and snapped the green AC Jazz Dash8 C-GANI about to make its way to Pearson.

And on the other side of the concourse was N411WN turning around in double quick time back to MDW

One thing I did notice however was that there was very little air conditioning in the terminal and I was sweltering in the summer heat. I just sat and waited for my flight to show up and it arrived at A4 and not the expected A5 this prompted a seat shift but quite soon N436AW arrived to take us to PHL. Nice looking newly painted and gleaming in the sunlight. Here is a pic of it with the Big Blue Deck in the background.

Once on board, I was asked to move by the FA from my assigned 9F to 1F so 2 peeps could sit together. The kid was wearing a Man Utd shirt and the FA informed me she was from Wrexham so whom was I to argue?

1F was also the bulkhead at the front so allowed my knees some extra breathing room.

Also I got to sit next to the lovely welsh FA Judith.

We taxied over to 21R behind a Comair RJ and at this point my neighborly FA told me to turn off the camera.

We (appeared) to fly out of DTW along the northern shore of Lake Erie for awhile and I was looking for Pt Pelee National Park but ultimately cloud cover got in the way and blocked most of the view.
After reaching 10,000 feet I was told I could use my camera again but didn’t bother with anymore snaps as I made conversation with the FA as she was training some lass who was doing the drinks run and was talking about living back in blighty and all that good stuff. She had moved to the USA when she was 17 and never looked back, her hubby Dean was a co-pilot Air Wisconsin so they definitely keep it in the family.

Our descent into PHL was usual if not a little bumpy as storms were in the vicinity, indeed the DTWIAD flight of UA was cancelled I noticed back in Michigan.

All in all a pleasant flight on the hour 10 min journey. Arrived at the gate (F36) about 5 mins early.

I had plenty of time in PHL so was advised by Judith to go for my pre long haul smoke out of the F concourse as it was easier to get back through security and then get the shuttle bus to A concourse.

Well isn’t gate A26 just a long long way from anywhere?
Have to say, really like the rocking chairs in PHL, a nice classy touch. I think I passed most of them in my hike to A26, although it was my mistake I got off the bus at C concourse instead of A.
A26 didn’t afford me a decent shot of the craft to take me home, but I managed to snap these as I wandered around PHL

Now……….I am normally a pretty easy going laid back soul, and I read a lot of other trip reports and wonder why the authors allow themselves to get so pissed off with trivial things, well I am sorry, I empathise now as some peoples’ boarding behaviour is downright rude. LINE UP TO BOARD THE AIRCRAFT WHEN YOUR ZONE IS CALLED, but more importantly, don’t block the gate waiting, for Christ sakes your on the plane for 7 hours as it is, I certainly wasn’t rushing to be first on board.

We seemed to sit on the aircraft for ages and waited for a few last stragglers whom I presume were rushing off other late connections. We eventually pushed back at 2055 EST and then proceeded to line up for the runway behind most of US fleet which caused us more wait time.

The load factor in this flight (as the Air Wisconsin flight) was chocka block full. But then again the Open Championship was taking place that weekend in Liverpool and a lot of conversations revolved around Tiger and Mickelsons tee times.

I was sat next to a lady whom wondered if I would mind moving so her cousin could sit next to her………she wanted me to move to 11C.
Erm……..no thanks…….however fate got its revenge as I had planned to read during the flight as pretty soon it got dark and my reading light didn’t work.
I couldn’t be bothered to wake the lady from her slumber so I could grab my earphones from my backpack to watch any of the entertainment system (which isn’t half bad) but the lack of a moving map really ticks me off.

So I just sat there in the dark, occasionally writing notes for this trip report and wondering when the sun would show its face over the eastern horizon.

There were 2 initial drinks services, the first I recall pretty quickly after take off as we flew over NYC, followed by the customary beef or pasta meal choice, out of interest, the BBQ Beef was very good.
And then a second drinks service during dinner.
That was it then, for nearly 6 hours until they served a doughnut thing for breakfast. I was parched.
Parched, bored, and miserable.

Because of the late departure, sunrise came rather early and I lifted my shade a tad again so I was able to read somewhat, and my new found absorbsion in the book and accompanying sunlight gave me a second wind and next looked out of the window to see western Ireland and lush green fields.

I can only presume we did the MIRSI (is that right??) approach into MAN as we flew right over Liverpool and could quite clearly make out the Liver building, Cathedrals and Albert Dock. We then went north over Manchester / Lancashire before sweeping right and south over around Mossley and Audenshawe for the familiar approach over Stockport / Gatley onto 27R.

I am not overly impressed with US compared to UA and NW however I do like arriving in the UK with a 10 minute drive to my Dads in Timperley rather than changing at AMS or LHR. However despite the price I shall no longer fly US as the lack of trivial things such as map and paying for drinks and headphones upset me, I’d buy the headphones if they had channel 9 though.
Although at least US have A330 and not the current trend of lobbing a pencil like 757 across the pond.

I must agree that I would be pissed if there were no moving map. In regards to drinks/headphones, if you want them for free, stick w/ NW, and UA. I think both still offer free drinks/heaphones on international flights.

Nice report, though shame you did not enjoy your US flight.

I've had numerous US flights to/from the UK and they have all been just great.

Regarding the drinks, pretty much all American carriers charge for drinks now.

The moving map thing, well for me I can leave that, to me it just tends to make you look at it and see you still have a long trip ahead.

Also-your observation is correct, last time I flew across the pond (MEM-AMS, DC-10) with NW I got free wine in Y. Which was great-until old the lady next to me decided she wanted to hang with me for old time's sake and ended up throwing up on the seat in front of her.
