This is the second of my three pending trip reports.
The first one being

SQ Adventure BOM-SIN-HKG-BOM[64 56k Friendly Pics] (by Karan69 Jul 13 2006 in Trip Reports)

and the third one being in GF Air F and J class routing BOM-BAH-LHR-BAH-AUH-BAH-MNL-BAH-BOM with around 150 photos which will take sometime as i am putting the photos in a user friendly format.

Anyways back to the report.

Background Information

The idea of this trip came up the day me and my father went to the travel agent to make the payment of my SIN-HKG trip [trip report link above], it was over there that the TA informed us that CX had just come up with an offer of INR 8888 plus taxes to BKK and back, Dad had always wanted to revisit the place after our trip back on KE in 1997 and after a few discussions regarding cancellations, dates etc.. he told the travel agent to go ahead and make the booking for 27th to 31st Dec.
The per ticket cost came up to be INR 10,750 [235 USD approx] all inclusive, about 130 USD less than the normal lower fare brackets.

I was excited to say the least two trips with 777s and 747s in the space of 20 days, and two world class carriers in SQ and CX, moreover it would be the first time i was ever going to fly and experience the much heard about service of CX that too on a 777-300 and for a price of 235 USD. i just could'nt thank my parents enough for these trips.

27th Dec, 2005

The flight was scheduled in the early morning hours of 0500am so that meant a very tiring night ahead of us, because of the weird timings.

We reached the airport at around 0145am, well in time for the flight, after clearing security and getting ourselves checked in for the fully loaded flight, we headed towards the immigration counters, which due to peak hours took us 45 mins to clear.

After immigration we headed down to the holding area past the Oberoi Clipper lounge which is used by 70% of the airlines that come into BOM, as we walked passed it, I remembered that me and my father were Gold card holders of Diners Card, which would grant us lounge access.

So we went in the lounge and the lounge attendant had an argument with my father as he said that only me and my father were card holders and that my mother would not be allowed, my dad said that she could since 2 out of 3 family members held gold status, and after much hard talk the lounge attendant gave in and the three of us walked inside to relax in the lounge.

The food collection is never great at the lounge, and mainly consists of snacks, although it does have an impressive array of drinks.

I took a soda and some eatables and enjoyed myself at the same time wondering, this is life:: a 10,000 INR ticket, A CX 777-300 for a 4 hours journey, and Lounge Access aint life good.

The few eatables at the lounge, samosa, Veg Sandwich,Pineapple Juice

Soon the boarding call was made and we headed to our departure gate, where the security line was pretty long.

After about 10 mins in the security line we were on the Aerobridge walking towards the aircraft.

I settled in my seat and realized the massive length and size of the aircraft and although I had been on the SQ 777-300, I had not noticed the size of the massive GE engines.

The CX cabin looked a bit dull and worn out as it was too green for my liking and worn out because I think CX really utilize their 773s efficiently on their High Density routes and especially since this aircraft was coming full of Indians and Middle easterns from DXB.

An EK 777-300ER was parked right next to us and was getting ready for its flight to DXB, those pax must be really fortunate to get a welcome change from the regular 332 that piles the route on some occasions 3 times a day.

But one question why a 77W and not 773A , maybe crew training???

Time went by as everyone began seating themselves on this fully loaded 777, and I could see the EK 77W leave its boarding gate and head towards the runway, its place was replaced by a KU 772.

A KU 772 replacing the EK 77W as we patiently await pushback

Two mins after the KU 772 arrived we began pushback exactly 7 mins after scheduled time and headed towards Runway 27.

The view while taxing was a pretty standard one full of AI 310s and 747s and one or two international heavies.

We reached holding position at runway 27 and waited for an IC 320 and 9W 737 to land and an AI 310 to depart.

After a very powerful takeoff we headed into the Mumbai skyline.

About 15 mins after takeoff when our seat belt sign was switched off, the cabin crew made an announcement that the IFE system had malfunctioned and instead of showing their regular channel selection, they would just be showing one movie on their system, namely The Island .

Since I had already seen that movie I dint bother and neither did any of the other passengers as it was a very odd hour flight. I tuned into their audio selection and fell asleep only to be woken up 2 hrs later when breakfast service began.

Now many people who have flown CX on this route before have always told me that their food service sucks, but having experienced a 5 star service of SQ just 10 days ago I was unwilling to digest the fact that another top ranked airline in CX could offer pathetic meal service..

When the meal service started I chose the veg option --- No menu cards were handed out, and Unfortunately my friends were right as I was shocked and dissatisfied to say the least. It was apparently a Breakfast Meal but they served us Paneer Makhanwala [Cottage Cheesse in a Butter Gravy] and Upma [A south Indian salted savory item]

For most of yoll who are unfamiliar with Indian Cuisine let me explain to yoll that this dish -- the cottage cheese one is actually a main course meal and is to be had either at Lunch or Dinner time, and the cottage cheese is supposed to be cooked wholly in butter, but in this case you could literally see the oil floating over the pieces of cottage cheese, it looked so unedible that my parents passed on it and just had the Crossiant with butter and jam and the upma, which in the true since are breakfast items.

However since Paneer makhanwala is my most favorite dish, I gave it a try and found that it tasted just as bad as it looked.

Dissapointed with CX so far----Their meal service was by far the worst I had ever had given the reputation CX carries with it,
No menu cards, or predeparture towels in comparison to SQ
And an IFE that had malfunctioned.

To make matters worse, when the FA who served us our meals asked me for any beverage, I ordered a Gingerale and I saw her make a note of it on her writing pad, but I dint get any beverage at all let alone the gingerale I asked for, and this happened to me twice, with two separate pursers—the second time I ordered a Coke as I thought they might have run out of Gingerale, but that dint come either.

Waiting for the drink I fell asleep again and awoke just as we were 25 mins from touchdown, I woke up my parents as the disembarkment cards were handed out, and all the other passengers around us were looking drowsy.

We began our approach and landed 5 mins after scheduled arrival time.

A smooth landing on a wet runway, and I had once again landed at BKK after almost 10 years, the last time it was a KE 300-600 coincidentally for the same price.

While we were taxing back I could see the much talked about army golf course and noticed a CX 772 takeoff, and snapped a pic of it.

We began deplaning after the standard deboarding announcement, which requested those who were continuing to HKG to remain seated.

As we were walking towards the Visa on arrival counters I snapped a photo of a SQ 772.

There was a long line for the visa on arrival, and I took this as an opportunity to take a few snaps, most of those airlines I had never seen before.

After a patient 45 min wait for our visa, we headed down towards the baggage claim area and went outside where we had to wait another 20 mins for our pick up.

BKK City

Having already seen BKK properly on my last visit, we generally just spent all our 4 days shopping. And did the complimentary half day city tour.

30th Dec, 2005

Our last day at BKK and after doing all the shopping we waited at our Hotel for our pick up which came at around 2130pm for our Scheduled Departure of 0100am.

We reached BKK amidst traffic conditions at around 2300pm. The mini van driver dropped us off at the wrong terminal and after realizing this all 9 of us [two other families along with us in the mini-van ] were cursing him and were very irritated at his behaviour towards us.

At the check in desk we found out that the flight was quite empty only about 55-60% booked. We comfortably managed to book window seats in the front end of the cabin, my father spoke a bit politely to the check inn agent and made her block the entire right side seats of row 60 so that he could stretch out and nicely sleep for the length of the flight.

After paying of the departure tax and passing through immigration mom and dad began roaming around the duty free shops, while I decided to take a self-tour of the airport and walk all the way upto our gate no. 55, which was very far away to see if our aircraft had arrived and from there walked all the way upto the domestic side of the terminals.

These are some of the shots I took on my walks and some of the aircrafts I spotted.

31st Dec, 2005

It was soon time for our boarding and I told my parents that we should walk a bit briskly as our departure gate was way too far, atleast for them.

Headed to our massive holding area which was for these flights, namely

In the holding area the air conditioners were on in full blast and those caused many people to take a leak, myself included
After I came out of the toilet the sight I notice left me awe struck.

See for yourselves.

After I took the above photos, the LH captain noticed me and gave me a wave , I returned the favour to him and had nice smile on my face as I headed back to the holding area.

Boarding was soon announced as the LX flight left its gate.

Me and my mother settled in our seats while dad went to his row 60 to settle in for the flight [I mean sleep through the night] wink

As people were coming in I went to the back of the cabin to see if the purser could give me some souviniers wink , I was pretty happy that he gave me a very nice looking writing pad and faber castle ball pen with CX titles on it.

We settled in for the flight I noticed that there was a mother with 3 young and noisy kids seated in front of us--- bummer

As we pushed back the lady put her seat back, although it dint disturb me as my mom and me had the middle seat empty, so we moved seats, the reason I am bringing this up is because even though the crew did their final checks, they did not ask her to put the seat back in upright position.

The captain came and made an announcement that there was a massive line for departures and it would take us atleast another 20-25 mins before we were airborne.
I did see a lot of action while taxing including another EK 77W occupy the vacant gate left by its sistership.

Here are some shots during taxi.

We finally reached the runway and soon enough were roaring into the dark BKK skies.

Fortunately this time there was no such malfunction announcement with regards to the IFE and I happily tuned into Atlantis, as I had not watched it when it had released, I quite enjoyed the movie and while the movie was running the meal service began---again no Menu cards [is this normal or do CX provide menu cards on “regional” sectors].

The meal this time was a lot better, and consisted once again of some paneer tikka masala[roasted cottage cheese in gravy], rice, Peas gravy and a crossaint

MyAviation.net photo:

Photo © Karan Bindra

The meal was as I said a lot better than my previous flight, but the cottage cheese was not as good as the one I had on SQ, but I was satisfied with my meal nevertheless as this time I got the beverage I had asked for i.e Sprite.

One other note, normally during meal services, don’t the cabin crew ask everyone to bring the seat back to upright position,??? [Correct me if I am wrong], but not this time as the seat in front of me was in reclined position, I too went ahead and reclined my seat, [there was no one seated behind me],.

Soon after the meal the trays were cleared and I contiuoed watching the movie, After about an hour I called for another soda, and it was promptly delivered with the can and a glass of ice, smile  I was happy to say the least and realized that my experience on CX 754 was a one off bad one. And was willing to fly them again as I have read good reports about them on the a.net forums.

As time went by we had about 30 mins before descent into the dark skies at Mumbai, and the approach was to be the traditional 27/09 approach.

We had a smooth touchdown and as were taxing towards are stand I took the following snaps, including that of HAWK21M working hard on his BD 732.

We finally docked at our gate, this was the first time i noticed that they made use of both the Aerobridge and simultaneously allowed the pax at the rear of the cabin to get going using the door and the bus ride to the terminal.

I reached and held lines at the immigration counters for my parents which was pretty busy as along with our flight there was an Air Arabia flight in from SHJ and a Saudia flight in from JED.

Despite being just 10th in line for the immigration it took well over 25 mins for my turn to come.

After Immigration we collected our baggage , cleared customs without much difficulty and took a taxi headed back towards our home.

Ratings

CX 754 BOM-BKK

Aircraft: 7/10
IFE: 4/10 good audio selection nevertheless
Service: 5.5/10
Food: 2/10

CX 709 BKK-BOM

Aircraft: 9/10
IFE: 8/10 good enough for a 4 hr segment
Service:8/10 good but not as good as SQ
Food: 7.5/10 altough each dish was enjoyable I think most Indians will agree with me that you cannot have a combination of those dishes all at once.

I know I have been a bit critical in the report especially the first segment, but most of my views came as I compared two of the 5 star rated airlines namely, SQ and CX—that is why you will see some of my statements like “no menu cards” etc..

I know many of yoll might come out fully armed in support of CX, and I can fully understand it …..So as usual any Comments/Opinions/Criticisisms are more than welcome.

One more thing I would want to ask the TR gurus, do I go into too much detail in my reports as If I continuoe to do so like this my upcoming report on my GF First class experirence will be a really long one---or would yoll prefer it in parts????????

Regards/

Karan

The IFE is one Sensitive Equipment.Noticed many Malfunctions frequently esp the Videos on most carriers.

Anything you mentioned here about CX could easily be applied to some of my SQ flights. No airline is perfect 100% of time and most of them certainly do not go the extra mile when it comes to the flights to India. I have only experienced true genuine service on two carriers out of India, while all the others in my opinion failed to live up to their world wide reputations. One of my biggest disappointment out of BOM has been with another 5 star airline based in DXB.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions and I certainly respect yours. I may think the complete opposite of you, but I can understand why you feel as such. However keep one thing in mind, BOM-BKK is a very short flight, even when compared to BOM-SIN. However I must say that the Indian cabin crew on CX always go the extra mile on my flights, shame you did not encounter any. Honestly, catering out of BOM has disappointed me on almost every carrier, even in Business.

Honestly, I like it the way it is. If you think it is going to be extremely long, break it up into parts, but not too many. You can take a quick glance to see how I do mine, Malaysia: Asia's Best Kept Secret? (W/pics)

Business? Even First tends to be lousy.

The food out of Bombay on AI First that I've experienced is very mediocre, made even more so as caterers in BOM have no clue how to put together a good breakfast (muffins you could crush a skull with, stale rolls, etc.). Plus, lets face it - Indian breakfast food is only good when its consumed minutes after preparation. If not, it all turns into a soggy, oily, disgusting mess. A dosa that is a culinary masterpiece turns into a damp pancake in an aircraft cabin.

Meals on BA First weren't much better and were a showcase for the classic airline rubber omelette syndrome, although served with more panache than AI can ever muster (and removed uneaten also with the same panache).

In fact, given that most international departures out of BOM are from 11:00 pm to 7 am, its hard to be treated to a good meal. Its usually a light supper (for those still awake and not exhausted after the general unpleasantness of Sahar airport) or a bad airplane breakfast.

Paneer Makhanwala at 7am  boggled  I'm not Indian, but even I know that's totally wrong! And serving it with upma (which, incidentally, is one of my favorite Indian dishes) is just bizarre. The croissant seems out of place with both meals.

Once again, a very nice report. Too bad about the patchy catering, but from what I've heard Indian meals aren't CX's strong suit.
Now, I'm still looking forward to that GF report.  Smile

I have only experienced true genuine service on two carriers out of India, while all the others in my opinion failed to live up to their world wide reputations

If you dont mind me asking, which are thos two---i assume one is MH and the other one is ???

Quoting SR 103 (Reply 4):
One of my biggest disappointment out of BOM has been with another 5 star airline based in DXB

I agree, whenever their option comes up for any of my families trips i bluntly refuse to fly then unless there is no other option.

Quoting SR 103 (Reply 4):
Everyone is entitled to their opinions and I certainly respect yours. I may think the complete opposite of you, but I can understand why you feel as such. However keep one thing in mind, BOM-BKK is a very short flight, even when compared to BOM-SIN.

Certainly sir i do understand the duration of the flight, and that is why i make this statement in the closing stages of my report.

Quoting Karan69 (Reply 1):
I was happy to say the least and realized that my experience on CX 754 was a one off bad one. And was willing to fly them again as I have read good reports about them on the a.net forums.

Quoting SR 103 (Reply 4):
Honestly, catering out of BOM has disappointed me on almost every carrier, even in Business.

Altough not been as fortunate to experience Bus class each time, but my catering on my GF Air flight in May was indeed quite good, but then again i have no international benchmark experience to compare prior to the GF air flights., but IC and AI are well reputed for their food., some of which i have experienced myself.

Quoting SR 103 (Reply 4):
Honestly, I like it the way it is. If you think it is going to be extremely long, break it up into parts, but not too many. You can take a quick glance to see how I do mine

I have read and enjoyed all your reports including your recent AA F class 767 flight and your EK one, infact you will find my replies in some of them.

Quoting 9V-SPJ (Reply 5):
Are CX754 and CX709 new flights on the BOM-BKK-BOM sector? On the CX website, I only see CX751 and CX750.

9V-SPJ

These flights were during the open skies of the winter months hence the varied timings, otherwise the BKK flight leaves BKK at an early evening hour of around 1700hrs

Quoting LPLAspotter (Reply 7):

Thank you for your comments.

If you can get one, use a rubber lens hood which will sit against the glass and provide a better seal against ambient light.

Appreciate the suggestions, will take a look into it.

Quoting LH459 (Reply 9):
Once again, a very nice report. Too bad about the patchy catering, but from what I've heard Indian meals aren't CX's strong suit.

Thank you for your comments, nice to know your a fan of one of my favourite Indian meals--Upma  wink

One of them is certainly Malaysian. The other airline does not serve BOM at the moment, KLM. I flew DEL-AMS in January 2004 and the service was excellent, just like any other KLM flight I have taken. Another airline that should really be added to the list is Swissair, but sadly but they do not exist anymore. I did numerous trips on Swissair and their service was consistently excellent, they were a wonderful airline to fly into BOM be it from either Europe or Asia.

I flew GF Business once out of BOM, however it was a few years ago and they were a totally different airline back then. It is interesting to note, that this is one of the few things that Emirates seems to be able to pull off. Most of the time the meals on Emirates are excellent. In my opinion, the meals were better out of DEL on KLM, but I do not have much experience with DEL catering to really compare.

As far as AI/IC, I can not comment as my last domestic flight was with Sahara. My dad however has been doing a lot of domestic traveling recently on IC, 9W, and S2 and he swears by 9W for some reason unbeknownst to me.

Great report! Pity you didn't have the best service on CX. With "5 Star Airlines" one tends to expect too much and be easily disappointed. I've mostly had excellent service with both CX and SQ.

Quoting Karan69 (Thread starter):
No menu cards, or predeparture towels in comparison to SQ

Usually in my Y Class experiences on CX I haven't gotten either. Saves $$$ for CX I guess. I did get one recently on a HKG-SIN leg.

Quoting Karan69 (Thread starter):
One other note, normally during meal services, don’t the cabin crew ask everyone to bring the seat back to upright position,??? [Correct me if I am wrong], but not this time as the seat in front of me was in reclined position, I too went ahead and reclined my seat, [there was no one seated behind me],.

Never happened to me on SQ or CX. In Y class it is not as much of a difference as in C or F.

Honestly I also thought CX was far overrated. I did a trip HKG-SIN-HKG a year ago and it was nothing special, I would say similar to LH, BA etc... I cant understand what sort of PR they used to get themselves awarded the best airline a few times. I yet have to find a chance to fly with SQ one day, but my girlfriend said SQ is way better.

I was referring more to genuine hospitality of the cabin crew. I have not had a chance to fly them since they became Swiss, but have heard a lot of people, including my parents say they are not up to the standards that Swissair had set in the past. However I have no personal experience to add to this as KLM became my preferred European carrier by 2002. As far as the 330 vs. M11, most of my BOM flying was on the 747's but you are right, when it comes to Economy, the 330 is better than the M11.

I remember the report, very well done. I think the reason some people criticized the meal was simply because everyone was used to seeing full meal service on flights within India. Example would be the following meal I had on S2 between BOM and DEL.

The airline you are referring to is actually just a 4-star airline according to Skytrax, and yes their high-density routes (not just to South East Asia) are simply a NIGHTMARE. Especially on their 777's. Perhaps their newer 77W'S may be better off cionsidering the new IFE system, but their worn out 773's are a total mess!

Mate in one of the replies to this TR someone has mentioned they do not give out menus on the S/haul sectors, on the L/haul sectors they do give out menus., and have "5 Star Type Service" .

Well i am not sure. A buddy of mine flew them from MEL-SIN-DXB on a 777300 and he said there was no new ICE system and the aircraft was old and worn out. Besides he aslo said the service was rushed and terrible. Perhaps one of those 'off' flights, but if you ask me, 10 abreast seating on a 777 is just overdoing it.

Quoting Karan69 (Reply 20):

Yeah the routing is weird. But i opted for this routing, as it was only 100USD more than what EK offered me, and that grants me a first-time experience on an A346. So why not?  Wink

Actually I have never flown a "high density" aircraft on Emirates let alone their 773. I constantly fly their 332's and 772's and most of the time in business. My complaints were never with the IFE, I am one of those than can live without AVOD if the selection is decent which it is on EK.

Honestly, the worst flight I ever had with EK was on a FRA-DXB flight while the best was a DXB-KWI flight. EK just has major consistency issues, nothing to do with the geographical area the flight is heading to. The last time I was in Dubai, I opted to fly a European carrier back to the US rather than EK as I felt it was not worth the effort to fly them anymore.

If at any time you feel you are getting a raw deal wit CX, just think of me. I just flew DAB-ATL-PHL yesterday and I would gladly exchange places with you! CX over almost any airline in my opinion. Very few come close to the service standards that CX has set and I hope you get to experience the true CX that I have grown to love after years of flying them all over the globe.

A true aviation nut just like the most of us here, but over such a long routing i would not have taken a route which takes me 9-10 hrs longer, but then again i might just do something similar later this year  wink

If you dont mind me asking what was the cost of VS to DXB as that would definitly give you an 346 one way or the other plus the time convinience.

Nevertheless we want a nice TR from you which is as elegant as the 346 in CX colours

Interesting thing my father changed his booking to GO air for INR 4100 RT, but GO called up saying the flight from BOM would be 3 hrs late [they actually called] and offered dad a full refund, so he is taking 9W for INR 2600 BOM-GOI, .

He tpld me to come too, and i was looking up fares and found IC A300 for just 2450 INR, but was hesistant as i am not been doing too well recently.

Would have loved to have been on that A300 once agian.

Very interesting report. Thanks for sharing! I've found menus and hot towels on CX to be totally random. I've had them on some short legs where you wouldn't expecct them, and then they weren't offerd on some longer trips.
