Once again it was time to head down to San Diego. I love going down there, just a short one hour hop and you’re in a lovely tropical-ish place.

Tuesday August 1st
American Eagle flight 3156
SJC-SAN
EMB-140
N815AE
Seat 5A
Dep. time: 8:40 a.m.
Arr. Time: 9:55 a.m.

I had never flown on an ERJ before, so it was mildly exciting to finally fly on one. I got to the SJC about 1 hour prior to departure, went to gate A14 and waited. They called my flight and everyone quickly got up and boarded the aircraft. We pushed back right on time, safety demonstration was played while we headed out to 12L for takeoff. Engines spooled up, and we were off. There was basically no turbulence as we climbed up to our cruising altitude of 33,000 feet. Unfortunately for me and my camera, no view because of the marine layer sitting below us the entire flight. Before I could really settle in I felt the plane begin to descend. The captain announced the descent into San Diego and the F/A collected garbage.

A quick descent through some thick fog, a sharp turn and then a beautiful landing on runway 27. We had arrived about 5 minutes ahead of schedule. Overall a wonderful flight, and I officially had just lost my ERJ virginity.

After a week of fun in the sun (err well kinda), lot’s of country music, and jack-in-the-box, it was time to go back home to the bay area.

Tuesday August 8th
American Eagle flight 3146
SAN-SJC
EMB-140
N849AE
Seat 7C
Dep. time: 4:05 p.m.
Arr. time: 5:15 p.m.

The express terminal at SAN is wonderful. It’s just one bulding and it’s the easiest thing in the world to navigate through. Once again I arrived at the airport about one hour prior to departure. The security is surprisingly quite thorough, got through that nicely and sat at the gate not wanting to go home. They called the flight and we walked out to the plane. I was lucky enough to have the whole row to myself, so I just put my backpack under the seat next to me and had a little more legroom. We pulled out on-time while the safety demonstration was played, taxied out to runway 27 and floored it (I could totally see another plane on final pretty damn close to the airport.)

We flew out over the coast and made a turn toward the north over Cali’s beautiful coastline. The flight was again, uneventful, although the skies were clear this time as we sped along at 36,000 feet. The F/A came and collected garbage (in one of those Thank You chinese food type bags) and we descended into SJC, flew over the ugly brown hills, and made a pretty hard landing like ¾ of the way down runway 30R.

Right on time, we pulled into gate A16 and de-planed. Luggage was quick to come out and I was home again. Hope you enjoyed reading, I tried to keep it short and sweet.

Thanks for the comments people. I forgot to add two things. 1) Personally I think they should've served more than just a drink. As much as I like my ginger ale, a bag of pretzels along with it would be nice. 2) The seats were very comfortable. That's it.

Cool pics! Thanks!

I remember back in the PSA days the Commuter Terminal (at SAN) was a PSA office building. Does anyone know if that building was their headquarters? After US took them over, the building had a US Air sign on it for a time as well.

Agreed. AE needs to bring back a free bag of snack mix/pretzles. I was on one of their ERJ-135s from STL-BOS about 2hrs 45mins long, no pretzles/snack mix whatsoever, only drinks and a $5 snack box. At least NW offers a snack box for $3.

Well at least they are kind enough to cancel the BOB onboard program for drinks... when I flew SJC-LAX last time, AE tried this trail BOB -- Soda for $1, nuts and snacks for $1, and the $4 snack boxes... only water is complimentary. I guess that program does not go well with anyone.

Anyhow, I just think BOB is a bit much for a regional carrier like AE. The flight is rarely long enough. Just stocking the galley with simple drinks and pretzels simplifies the catering process and makes more sense.

Thanks for the nice pictures of California.

That last pic was taken outside of SJC. It's a resivor of some type. Planes aren't that low over Escondido. You are thinking about Lake Wohlford most likely.

Yeah those hills are northern California hills. I bet the lake near Escondido he's thinking of is Lake Hodges. To me, SAN and the surrounding area is one of the most interesting places in the US to fly into and out of.

That last pic looks like it was taken over my hometown, Morgan Hill which is about 25 miles southeast of the airport (SJC). That body of water looks like Coyote Lake which is just southeast of Anderson Reservoir.
