I took advantage of the Skywards September promotion, (50% off for mileage required travelling between Australia and NZ) spent 37,500 miles booked a Sydney to Christchurch and Auckland to Sydney for the weekend. Emirates is a very generous carrier, even on a special 50% miles off promotion, they threw in a Chauffeur drive door to door service, that is pick up from Sydney, pick up from Auckland and drop off at Sydney again! Compare to other airline give such service is Virgin Atlantic but not on discount Business Z class fare or award ticket. EK is much better, provides such consistency on their premium product across all paid fares include redemption ticket.
At 6am sharp in the morning, a sleek looking black BMW 740I awaits me at my door to start my journey to NZ. Arrived at airport in 25minutes and there was no queues at First class check in desk. I was then invited to the new Emirates Airlines lounge at Sydney which they open not long ago. This lounge is downstairs from departure floor at the western end of terminal under Gate 57, 59, 60. First impression is such a grand lounge! Very spacey with nice décor, plush leather sofa and a good dining area.
The lounge features a great food area with a buffet table set up and a cold food bar.
There are more amount and choices of food than ANY other airlines lounge in Sydney, which the generosity of Emirates literally put airlines like Qantas to shame. Previously I thought Air NZ lounge was the best in Sydney, now I’ve seen better.
Boarding was delayed slightly around 20 minutes and was given priority to First Class and Business Class and Skyward Gold members. I was holding a red colour First Class boarding pass and was informed that I was the only passenger traveling today to Christchurch.
After boarding and familiarize with the cabin, I took some picture of the great experience.
There is a special amenity kit on the table, in the semi circle shaped designed space, plus the featured mini-bar with drinks already their waiting for me!
The purser, Hassan came to introduce himself and offer a glass of Dom Perignon and I thought it was a bit too early to start but he insist it was a good time for one. Another steward Jack saw my camera and offered to take a picture of me.
We pushed back 30 minutes behind schedule and only to be delayed further by holding for takeoff at the threshold. There were 4 arrivals and 3 departures in front of us. Airborne time was almost 1 hour behind schedule and we rotate about parallel to the tower.
Service started very shortly after the seat belt sign have been turned off, my champagne glass was topped off continuously with mixed nuts and a good selection of snack basket offered before the meal service – Brunch starts. Meal service is totally A la Carte style, I have green salad with cheese for the starter instead of cereal and yogurt or fruit plate. Then the main course has 3 choices, mix grill, omelet with cheese or blue seared Coe. I have the fish and it is very tasty. Crew came back to offer more but I was full. The meal presentation is wonderful, and use better Chinas than their Business Class ones. The bread basket was another great thing, and they have some of the finest Croissant I’ve ever tasted.
After the meal service, I quickly walked around the cabin, snapped a few more photos with my Nikon Fisheye lens. On a surprise note, after return from the lavatory, the purser Hassan had an instant Polaroid camera in his hands awaiting me at my seat; offered to take a photo of me! (Great initiative to have instant camera onboard) and later he presented the pictures in a special EK picture frame with crews signature to make this flight truly memorable.
I later decided to use the electronic control to close my mini-cabin door and have tea service inside with no disturb light turned on! And I reclined the seat fully to have a short rest, the bed is long enough for a 6 foot person and my toes didn’t touch the front like on Singapore or United First or VS upper class.
Arrival was eventless in CHC except the MAF of NZ (Custom) couldn’t understand why I want to fly SYD-CHC but going to AKL right away, my explanation of wanting to fly the A340-500 First Class amused them and they let me into the country.

Because of NZ school holiday have started, the check in area for Emirates is very crowded as 3 Emirates flights departing within 2 hours to Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne and continuing to Bangkok, Singapore and Dubai. Surprisingly no one was at First Class check in desk so I was checked within 3 minutes and there was a long queue waiting at Bank of NZ to purchase departure tax. (25NZD)
Auckland also has its own Emirates Lounge and it was slightly smaller than Sydney. It offers the usual amenity; include great shower room and food area. The décor selection reflects Emirates Corporate identity.
Boarding commenced about 20 minutes late, and indeed many people were queued up at the gate area, the crew standing at the door greeted me by my last name and pointed me to my seat. The picture below pretty much summed up my impression of the First Class cabin.
Cabin was spotlessly clean, as this plane was delivered only 3 months ago! I feel there was even more room than the A340-500 and the seat divider does a good job to keep the privacy, especially in the window seat you feel more private. Seat does go all the way to flat as it shows.
What it really impressed me is the meal service on this short 3 hour flight, a grand 7 course dinner!
Canapés, appetizer, salad/soup, entrée, fruit, dessert/cheese, tea and chocolate.
The meal presentation is excellent; you can have any mix of main course (Lamb, chicken, prawn or callinolli) with side dishes of mashed potato, rice and vegetables.
After the meal I explored the impressive ICE AVOD system, the screen was not touchable but controlled by the console. It was a bit slow in reacting but the loading of entertainment was very fast and impressive. One can watch the airshow/camera with your choice of music playing. I really enjoyed the Arabic beat music on channel 526.
Descend into Sydney was slightly bumpy with a strong NWterly cross wind at 30 knots, I can almost see our plane landing a bit sideway with a last minute corrections from the frontward camera.
After landing, I was allowed to go to cockpit and managed a 10 minutes chat with the friendly English captain and his Greek first officer. This resulted 300 people off the plane in front of me and a long congested immigration and custom control queue. My Limo driver was waiting patiently as it took 40 minutes for me to get out of the control area and took my baggage and in less than 25 minutes on a Siler BMW740I, I was home but the memory of this trip will last much longer than the journey itself.
Overall the short Trans Tasman trip over the weekend was very enjoyable with top notch service and amenity from Emirates. The EK412 A340-500 flight have been the best of my 2006 70 flights YTD. Co-incidentally, my best 2005 flight was also on Emirates, EK387 HKG-BKK A330-200. Thank you Emirates.

Nice trip report on EK, though I'm not so sure about the fisheye lens, you tend to loose perspective after a while, and I can't see why you would need to photo a PTV with a fisheye lens, but other than that very good!

Wow! That is what sitting up front should be. On your flight to CHC, there was a mini bar, was it refridgerated? Also, what is the little screen next to the seat?
On the AKL-SYD flight, where the beverages are kept, it looks like a vending machine. Was that a fridge, or where they warm?
Cookies are the Gateway pastry. They lead to Éclairs and Bear Claws.

I was just bloddy lazy didn't bother get to the camerabag to change to a non-fisheye lens!

The mini bar is not refridgerated. They're cabin temperature, I ordered a bucket with ice to drink with. The small screen is the control console which you adjust your seat, massage, ICE entertainment system, cabin door, volume and screen control and a qwerty keyboard. Only thing I have they don't have is inflight internet.
I will try to write a complete different report, Kras Air IL86 DME-KJA later.

I would not have minded the delayed departure... to make the trip last longer! Amazing presentation of the food. It looks like it came right from a restaurant kitchen.

Oh God!
You have just given me a lesson. I've to work really hard!
I must admit I'm envious. I just dream to fly in one of those seats, it must be a once-in-a-life-time experience, even if you have flown a thousand times.
For sure, that F class in the 773 looks much better than the A345. Tell me about the mini bar! The spacious cabin! Well, I don't know which one's better.
For now, I just have to hope EK comes to Venezuela... otherwise, I'd have to go far to fly'm!

Quoting CaptainTim (Reply 10): you being a UA fan i guess youre very excited about the new first/business class to on the intl routes eh?
do you have any idea what they will look like??
Hi Tim, I heard several rumours but no proven ideas. I won't expect UA to have a very innovative product, i just hope they go with fully flat bed (not lie flat bed). US carriers does lag behind in terms of cabin comfort, I guess mainly becase of competing at a different segment of the market (US carrier vs US carrier) and a different level of game and to standardise their large fleet.

Yes i am with you 100%. I like Emirates food (in any class) since my 1st time onboard with them, I am quite impressed with the amount of food, and the quality of them. Very generous and rare airline didn't cut quite as much corner as many do these days. The food EK have is better than the SQ/TG.

Outstanding pics. Those C class pods are like nothing I've seen before - simply amazing. I suppose we know where some of the oil money is going these days, yes?!

Hey,
Lovely report, the pictures are truly outstanding, you can imagine yourself there! The F cabins look very different but they both have their plus points, it's hard to decide which looks better! I think EK has got the right balance with these two- the more privacy for the 345 on longer sectors etc.

Hi Sam,
outstanding report and excellent pictures. I have just tested EK's A345 as well - and even in Eco the plane is very enjoyable. I'm quite sure what I will save my miles for...

nice report. you are so lucky to get to get to fly on EK's first class. one question though, did you like the A340-500 or 77W first class better?

So jealous Sam but what a great report!
Quoting N178UA (Thread starter): I was the only passenger traveling today to Christchurch.
Haha, another great reason to fly Emirates F to CHC!

One thing i'm afraid of.. My aunty and uncle went to SYD for shopping for a day and brought back a box of chips.. The immigration queried them when they arrived back in AKL.. But taking a flight to AKL after arriving in CHC isn't too bad, surely!
Damn, wish I had the money and everything to even collect that many miles.. I wonder if taking up aviation photography would be good
When I first saw the A345 F suite I was amazed by the "suites".. Now the pics you have taken make it seem quite claustrophobic, but I guess anything like that is better than having a overweight person next door to you in Y, flowing into your seat!

Sam - very nice report. I've been wanting to fly Emirates but have yet to have the opportunity. It looks nice, though. As for the pictures, I'm going to cast my vote in the "fish eye lens is a nice but easily over-used effect" column, just for future reference.
