Hello all,
About a week and a half ago, I made reservations to visit Norway and Finland with my dad, and started a thread about it in nonaviation. I Am Going To Norway On 9/28! (by Thepilot Sep 22 2006 in Non Aviation) This is how we got there...
So the day finally came! The beginning of my trip to Norway and Finland with my dad! The 3:45 alarm clock didn’t sound so bad as a got up and quickly hopped into the shower. Then, my mom and I drove down to Fremont to pick my dad up, and we were off with my beautiful black Labrador Ebony to SeaTac.
My mom dropped us off at the Continental check in (I had checked in online with United), and I got my boarding pass for Oslo. Security was rather easy, and the lines weren’t horribly long at 4:45 in the morning. Our booking was somewhat unique. My dad had booked his flights before me, and when I tried to book the same flights, the 8:00 CO between SEA and EWR was sold out. So I had to use United to get to EWR. So my dad flew CO nonstop to Newark and I went through ORD. One more flight to write about for you anetters!
We took the tram to the North Satellite, and the immediately switched the flow. It was still dark, so I didn’t really care. We went to a small bagel shop in the North Satellite, and I enjoyed a good breakfast. It was finally the boarding moment, and my dad made his way back to the B Concourse (where CO flies out of in SEA), and I boarded. I was quite lucky, as there was no one in the middle seat, and the aisle lady was quite friendly.

United Airlines Flight 534 (Boeing 757-200) (N577UA)
Depart: Seattle International Airport, 6:15am, (Gate N1) (Runway 34R)
Arrive: Chicago O’Hare International Airport, 11:45am (Gate B7) (Runway 9R)
Seat 26F Load Factor: 98% Cruising Altitude: FL350
Wheels Up: 6:22am Wheels Down: 11:47am
We pushed on time and taxied to runway 34R. Many times during a North flow at SEA, aircraft will take the Quebec taxiway intersection for their departure. We did full length, and we rotated 6,000 feet down the runway. Classic 757 climb up to FL350, taking us over EAT, EPH, MWH, and the rest of Washington. Our movie was Nacho Libre with Jack Black, which I sort of faded in and out of. It took a while before Channel 9 turned on, I listened to that and Reggae musician Sean Paul, who I have taking a liking to.
A note of possible interest: right after be switched to Salt Lake City ARTCC, they had a small scare when they called American 1197 and they didn’t respond immediately. I think it was a callsign confusion, but he answered after about five tries to reach him. That is the benefit of Channel 9, you get to hear all of this stuff that you would be otherwise ignorant to.
We got a drink and a biscuit stick, which wasn’t half bad. For the most part the rest of the flight was smooth, nothing to complain about. We started our descent about 40 minutes out, and I turned Sean Paul off to listen to Channel 9. We descended over a lot of golf courses and high-end real estate. I was able to snap two pictures of airports as we intercepted the 9R ILS. The pilots were fighting a 12 knot cross wind, and it felt like we touched our left wheel down first then our right. Taxied a while to B7, and I went to get a Quiznos. I found a TV monitor and it looks like our flight was delayed 15 minutes. Oh no!
Pictures!!
Banking out of Mercer Island after departing 34R.
A crappy picture of Mount Rainier as we pass it.
The beautiful Columbia River.
The Missouri River, I think.
As we began our descent, we passed over this airport. Don’t know its name, but it had a runway 13/31. Any help?
Here’s another airport that I snapped as we intercepted the ILS for 9R. This should be easier for you guys to identify.
Pretty rough touchdown, although the pilots had a nasty crosswind to fight.
I walked to gate B1, and low and behold, there was no airplane. Our flow time came and passed, still no airplane. Finally, an hour later, our airplane arrived and then, after boarding, we just sat on the plane at the gate for 25 minutes, not moving. We then taxi to runway 4L, and took off over Lake Michigan. We passed right over DTW, but there was a cloud that prevented me from getting a picture! Anyway, right over Pennsylvania, we got put in the holding pattern for 50 minutes. I heard all of this through Channel 9.
Around and around we went in the holding pattern, and CO 1049 diverted to Stewart Field because of fuel! Finally, we went through the millions of vectors for the ILS 22L approach. We had a bumpy ride over Teterboro, and we touched down very roughly in a 15 knot crosswind. We taxied to gate A17, the United 93 gate , and I walked to the Air Train for my connection to C122!
Many people had missed their flights because of the delays, but I had a long layover so I was lucky. Anyway, as I was walking past the security checkpoint, I put my hand in my pocket to take out my cell phone, and I hear, “TAKE YOUR HAND OUT OF YOUR POCKET!!!” I spun around, and a TSA agent was pointing at me. “WHAT IS IN YOUR POCKET?!” “My cell phone.” “SHOW ME!” I pull out my cell phone, and he yells, “GO!” and I continue on to the C terminal.
After clearing security, I met up with my dad at C122, and we went and got some really good teriyaki. We charged my laptop at the gate, waiting for our pencil that would fly us over the pond!
Pictures!!
Just sitting at B1 next to a 735 bound for DCA.
On upwind out of 4L. Lots of construction going on. What is it for?
If it is that hard to tell, I love airport overviews. This one was about 4 miles out of O’Hare. Know it?
Cruising just before we were put in the dreaded holding pattern.
Another patron of the holding pattern underneath us.
Probably my best shot of the day. An overview of Teterboro on final for 22L.
The Manhattan skyline…
Another rough touchdown, but there is more to piloting than just a smooth touchdown.
Our 752 arrived about an hour late from Cleveland to take us across the pond. Everyone was crowding around the gate, waiting for boarding to begin. Finally, it did, and we took our seats. The flight was relatively empty, with a load factor of around 60-70%. The flight attendants were very kind and helpful, and we even got free pillows and a blanket!
We taxied past many other CO airplanes, and scooted on over to 22R. My dad thought it would rotate in 4000 feet! Ha! It rotated at about 6.5-7000 feet. We made a few right turns and got a beautiful downwind view of EWR. This is my first flight on a 752 with winglets, and you could really feel the raw power of the 752. Amazing!
After we were cruising, we got served drinks and a full meal! Holy crap! A full meal on a US Airline?! It consisted of a small piece of chicken, a small salad, a bread roll, and a Milano cookie. It tasted pretty good, especially because it was my first full meal since Korean Air LAX-ICN. After dinner, we hit a little bit of turbulence, which was consistent for a lot of the flight. I tried to sleep on multiple occasions, but the maximum sleep I got was about 20 minutes. However, there were many, many starts out which were beautiful to look at.
After three movies, none of which I watched, we began our descent into Gardermoen. We came in over some beautiful lakes and fjords, and while on base, I got a good view of the airport. We turned about a three-mile final, and neither the flaps nor the gear was down. So the pilot immediately dropped the gear, put down all the flaps, and we smoothly touched down on the yellow 19R. We taxied to gate 53, next to a Norwegian Air Shuttle, and we deplaned. The jetway was amazing, just like ICN, and immigration was very easy. My dad and I hopped on the Flytoget into Oslo central, and walked to our hotel, the Rica Grand Hotel.
Pictures!!
Our 752 wing view. Note the sexy winglets.
Banking out over New Jersey.
The landing light illuminating our powerful engines.
Sunrise over the Atlantic. I just woke up, also.
One of the beautiful fjords of Norway, while turning towards Gardermoen.
Short final over some beautiful country.
Touchdown on 19R! Note the yellow runway edge markings.
Cargo ramp!
Side view of the terminal.
Control tower of OSL.
Gate 53, our gate.
Well that concludes my trip to Norway. I hope you liked it, and your computer didn’t explode from too many pictures. I will post part two of my trip next Monday or Tuesday, and that will be on Finnair between OSL and HEL.

Nice report - too bad you weren't able to take the SK SEA-CPH-OSL routing, which would have saved some time and headache. Eitherway, looks like you had a great experience and took some great pix.

Stuff like this seems to be ok in Norway, provided it is written in a foreign language. Weird stuff, I know...
Personally I think it has gone a bit too far, when children's television programmes are interrupted by adverts, including a trailer for some action film where the f-word is used uncensored...

Thanks again to all those who have read!
Good news, I get to fly twice domestically here in Norway, BGO-TRD on DY, and BOO-OSL on SK (Braathens, I think), in addition to the AY OSL-HEL-OSL trip. So more trip reports! Who hoo!

Hi!
After seeing excelent report I had to drop a few lines, and this is the reason:
1 - I was with my wife and young daughter in Oslo back to September 2005, and I saw some your photos of Oslo Harbour ( taken from the castle...) and inside the FRAM ( also a great museum...) at Bigdoy!!!
2 - I also flew in the same CO 757 from EWR to LIS on the 14th. July, and interesting enough at that time the OSL CO flight was just next to our plane...
Anyway, I had great fun reading your report!!!
Take car and regards
