Hi fellas and once again welcome to one of my trip reports.
This time only a daytrip which brought me to Germany's second largest city- Hamburg!
Let me start with the night before my trip, Tuesday. There was a bigger storm later in the evening, causing flight delays and cancellations into BSL, my local airport. What happened is that several aircraft were not able to reach BSL for their nightstop.
In the morning of Wednesday, i got up at 4.30 in the morning and went to the airport by local train and bus, and realized that several aircraft were missing, at least one Swiss Avro (they cancelled the flight to BRU), LH/Contact Air ATR-72 was missing too and unfortunately one of the BSL based easyJet-aircraft was missing too. Fortunately all flights will be operated but the first flight in the morning to PMI already showed a 2.5 hour delay. Our flight to Hamburg was on-time but maybe the aircraft flying to PMI will do my return flight from HAM to BSL in the evening?
Anyway, our boarding started on-time and we departed 3 minutes early, at 6:57 in the morning.
I checked-in some days earlier as easyJet offers online check-in for this route and printed out my boarding pass at home:
As mentioned we left on-time via runway 16 and after a British Airways A-319. Still dark outside and with a usual excellent view of my home town by night! The rest of the flight was uneventful and cloudy all the time. One thing I noticed was that there was a huge amount of business travellers on this flight. Onboard service as usual, easyKiosk sells their products, followed by duty free articles.
The flight attendands on this flight were very charming and friendly as usual.
Approach into Hamburg was via Norderstedt, low clouds but perfect landing. Good thing in Hmburg is that easyJet receives a dock
In general I must say that Hamburg airport is a very nice airport. Roomy, customer friendly AND: They have a visitors deck!
So after my flight I proceeded to this place and made some pics:
You can see my plane on this one:
Lufthansa territory:
Nice line-up:
The LOT Embraer has just aborted it's take-off and is taxying back:
The reason was that a Finnair Airbus obviously had a medical emergency on board and requested an immediate runway, the aircraft landed towards the departing aircraft, that's why LOT needed to abort. All other planes needed to wait on ground for some minutes.
Anyway, I hope everything went well with the passengers aboard, does someone know what happened? It was not a HAM-bound Finnair since the regular Finnair flight was already there.
Hamburg's terminal 1, very nice:
And then all of a sudden, I see this picture of my favourite airline!!!
The airport director of Hamburg airport is Swiss and worked as a Crossair manager for years. As you can see this airline still lives in the heart of many people!
Then headed downtown by bus 110 to Ohlsdorf train station and from there by train to downtown. Here some city pics:
After that I went to Wedel near Hamburg on the Elbe river. I had lunch in the "Schulauer Fährhaus":
It is a cool place I tell you. Every ship that arrives in Hamburg receives a salute from this Fährhaus. "Welcome to Hamburg, we are happy to see you in our harbor", followed by the national anthem of the ship's homecountry. When a ship leaves Hamburg they will also play the national anthem and say: "Hamburg wishes a good and safe trip, we hope to see you soon again in our harbor". There's also a retired captain who gives information about every ship that passes by. If you are in Hamburg, this is the place to go!
Heavy traffic on the Elbe:
Not what I call a small boat. Registered in Monrovia, Liberia:
Went back via Blankenese to Hamburg city centre then. What would Hamburg be without it's red light district?
Hamburg harbor:
Then went for a coffee and piece of cake German style and after that headed back to the airport.
My flight showed a delay of 30 minutes so nothing to worry about. Enoug htime for dinner and having a few views of the tarmac:
I love this retrojet
The sky turned into Lufthansa colours
Nice sunset after heavy rainfall:
In the meantime something happened in BSL. Our aircraft to HAM was involved in a medical emergency and got delayed for another hour. It is really good that you can land in BSL until 12:30 if necessary. Such an incident in Dortmund and the flight gets cancelled or diverted due to a stricter night curfew.
Anyway, I went for dinner then. That's what I call a German meal!
Instead of 20:55 we finally left Hamburg at 22:20.
The flight was uneventful again, the crew apologised for the delay and explained the reasons for it. The crew again very friendly and very funny too. They were in a really good mood despite the long working day they had.
The sky was cloudy again until Strasbourg, where we had a good view on the city. Approach started and after some nice views of Mulhouse by night we finally landed at 23:35 after an Iberia/Air Nostrum CRJ inbound from BCN.
So, my trips 31 and 32 on easyJet. As usual I was very happy to be onboard and enjoyed every minute flying with them.
I hope you enjoyed my report and I would be very glad to receive comments!
Best regards,
RJ100

Hey Thomas, really good reading there. I've never been to HAM but I'll have to check it out sometime, that river and harbour looks cool.
Pretty eventful flying then, with all those medical emergencies! At least you got time to have a beer and a german erm, meal? Haha, I'm starved at the moment so I could really eat that now!

Hey, Thomas,
interesting report as usual.
Real good pix about one of my favourite cities in Germany.
I was there around two months ago and do some similar pix like you do.
The open terrace is also nice, sitting in the summer sun and spotting planes,
not bad.
Only the sun was lost on your pix in comparison to my stay there.
Regards,
Markus (FLIEGER67)

I will add one more to the positive comments you have received Thomas. Great report!
I was in Hamburg in 2004 and it is a place that I really like. Moreover, I had a lot of fun because a very good friend of mine lives there (and two more used to live there when I visited) and I cannot wait for the opportunity to go back. Your pictures brought back a lot of great memories... I too had the chance to see the incredibly beautiful center of the city, take a boat tour of the harbor (which is really impressive), eat and drink like a local, and spend a really fun night clubbing in St. Pauli. Ah, those times!

I hope you enjoyed Hamburg. It's a great city, but a daytrip isn't enough to get to know it better. Next time you come to HAM, you should stick around for a few days longer, especially when you want to visit the Michel, the region at the Alster (along with the area near the Dammtor and CCH) or the Dom (to give you a few examples).
Try to come during the winter. If you're lucky, the Alster will be frozen enough for you to skate on it. It's quite an event when the Alster freezes. Lots of people come to skate or just to walk on it and others use the opportunity to sell hot beverages.

Very nice report, Thomas! Unfortunately I have never made it to Hamburg so far despite only living a good 250-300 km away from it, but all this is going to change in December, when I will be able to find out for myself, whether this city is as great as it is hyped to be.

Thanks again for an interesting report about easyJet and an insight into Hamburg. You mentioned the storm on Tuesday night. Do you by any chance know what happened to the LPL flight that day? It landed on time but didn't take off until after 2100. Was that also to do with the weather?

Thanks a lot for your comments!
@Alex: I can only recommend HAM. If you get a cheap flight from MAN then take it! Good place for nightlife too (experienced from an earlier trip)! Would actually be a cool place to organise an a.net meet!
@JAGflyer: It's a normal Bratwurst. I'm not an expert though. Some Germans can shed some lights into this last remaining mystery of mankind?
@9V: No plans to go to Barbados right now...
@Markus (Flieger67): Yes I can remember your report! And I cannot wait for your next one!
@Eddie: Thanks a lot. It was my pleasure to write this report! Stay in touch...
@LTU932: Yes, I enjoyed HAM very much! Next trip is already booked (November 1st)
@TIS: Haha yes! I thought I would stand in Geneva for a moment too!
@TriStar500: Thanks! And I hope you will enjoy HAM too when you will visit!
@Infodesk: Thanks! Glad you enjoyed my report! The LPL flight should leave BSL at 17:30. Hmm, as far as I can remember the storm hit my area later, the worst between 8 and 9 in the evening I think. So my guess is that the flight had a problem in BSL and when they fixed it they needed to wait another hour until the storm went away. But again, that's just my guess.
So next trips are on easyJet too! First Istanbul (SAW) and then HAmburg again in November!
Take care everyone!
Regards,
RJ100

Great report! My whole family is from Germany with my moms side all from Hamburg. I am making my yearly trip in December for Christmas. Flying BA Club there and FIRST on the way back (!!!) because of a reservation screw up on BA's part. They misbooked me and as a token of their apology they bumped me to FIRST on the way back...
