FR LTN-MJV

My second trip on this route this year.....
For the first look here:

This was basically a weekend Scuba diving trip in southern Murcia. The area has a reputation for being a good place to dive, so it seemed a good idea to get another holiday/dive before the end of the summer.

Initially I found flights for £100, but this soon increased to £140+, so to get the cheapest fares I was planning to fly LTN-MJV and then LEI-STN! This was a bit impractical though, both in England and Spain, so I ended up just going LTN-MJV return.

Airline: FR
Aircraft: B738
Time: 14.25
Route LTN - MJV
Duration 2 hrs 20 Min's

FR only fly a very few routes from LTN as STN about 20miles away is their base, but I live about 20 Min's from LTN but nearly an hour from STN. MJV is luckily one of those (U2 fly there from LGW - again an hour away from where I live) and serves Alicante as well.

As I was going to southern Murcia, 40mins away from our apartment, MJV is much better, ALC would be an extra hour at least.

Leaving for the airport the weather was really bad, heavy rain, as you can see in the pics. I thought the flight might be delayed as there was so little visibility. LTN is about 20mins away........well almost as there is Roadworks and a 40mph limit for 9 miles or something so it took a little longer than normal, but was uneventful apart from that. Arriving at LTN, there was chaos with the new short/drop off point. The old area was bad, but somehow they manged to design the new area even worse! All the cars are forced into a long circular route and people stopping to let passengers out created long traffic ques right back to the bridge.

The terminal wasn't very busy, I had to Que for a while at check in though as I arrived later than I thought because of the traffic. Security was quick, a long but fast moving Que, very efficient. Going into the departure area, the rain was really heavy. I went round to the gate area/other departure area which is a long walk, I didn't intend to buy anything and this area was much quieter, although that means there's not much to see either. A FR plane going to Reus was visible, and the Murcia plane next to it, although the way the gates are arranged you can't see a lot. A Finland air 767 (I think) was next to the Murcia plane but it wasn't really possible to see it. After we boarded another FR plane appeared where the Reus plane was (probably going to Nice).

We left pretty much on time, except to wait for a Monarch 767 to take off. Didn't get a pic unfortunately. There was another 767 on the concrete area, white and brown but not an airline. Take off was fast, but all LTN flights are. After heading south across bedfordshire, we cruised at about 10,000ft for some reason until we got to the south coast (about 10mins), and the clouds had cleared by now mostly, when they suddenly climbed to 35,000ft. Over france it was cloudy so there was nothing to see for ages, but just as we got to Spain (not far from GRO) it was sunny. I couldn't see Barcelona, must have missed it. MJV is still 30mins south from here, and had a good view on the coast and started out descent over Alicante (ALC is about 10mins flying timeish north from MJV). Flying out over the sea, unfortunately I don't have many pics, because I tried to take video instead but the video later turned out rubbish. It wasn't that interesting anyway, except for a view of La Manga.

Landing was pretty normal, quite fast as MJV has a shortish runway but nothing unusual.
Got to the tiny terminal a through immigration quickly, but I shouldn't have bothered as my luggage took 40mins to appear.

There were many agents around trying to sell property, and the airport was full of middle aged English people, mostly going to play golf by the airport/La Manga or go to camp sol probably.

Apart from a few people going to La Manga, and a few kids, I was probably one of the youngest people on the flight (22).

Once I had collected that we had a 40min drive first to Cartagena and then through the mountains to Azohia. The weather was great, about 20'C and sunny even at 7pm (the sun was starting to set as we arrived though).

This bit is a little about the holiday, so if you not interested you can skip to the final part.

After arriving in Azohia, a coastal village surrounded by mountains and amazing views across Puerto de Mazzarron, the main town, we had to wait until the next day for the first dive.

Our (we own it) apartment coincidentally happens to be in this town where the diving is supposed to be very good, the best in the area. The apartment is rented out usually, we just made sure it wasn't booked then. The views (see photos) were quite impressive, although I've been there several times, it still impressive.

The white things in the distance are tomatoes or some kind of fruit - look at a fruit box from sainsbury's, it'll probably have Murcia on it - it's one of the main income for the area as well as tourism.

The scuba centre was less than 2 mins drive from our apartment, where we got our rented gear, tanks and wetsuits and stuff, then drove to the edge of the village (about another 2 mins). The wetsuits were full length to keep warm, which was new to me. The tanks were heavier than I remember, but manageable. The small pier had many boats around, but most of the active ones were other divers! Even in october, Saturdays are very busy. I counted about six different boats. Our boat was small but enough for the equipment and the other 4 or 5 people that were going to dive with us. It was a bit slow, and we had a long ride around the cliffs towards Cartagena to the dive site. It was worth it though, as the dive site was a great location, with under cliffs about 20m (about as deep as we dived) and amazingly clear water - visibility was 20m or more. There were many fish, no coral of course, but the underwater rocks made up for it.

It was only about 21'C that day, and on Sunday we didn't dive as there were no spaces, but it was very hot, up to 26'C I would estimate. Monday we dived again, this time closer to the pier, but the weather again was cooler - about 22'C. The water was warm on the surface though, only getting colder with depth. Vis. wasn't quite as good, and the sea slightly rougher, but still impressive. Again we dived next to a cliff, but this was more vertical, with some huge rocks on the seabed (as big as a truck) and plenty of fish, and a few starfish.

Airline: FR
Aircraft: B738
Time: 18:25
Route MJV - LTN
Duration 2 hrs 20 mins

Tuesday was hot again, about 26'C and very sunny. The journey to MJV was quick and we arrived at the airport early. This time there weren't any crowds, although we got to the front of the STN line and waited, so we'd be first or near enough. As soon as the LTN desk opened there was the usual huge mass of people suddenly appeared in the tiny check in area.

The airport is very small for the number of passengers (while I was there there were 2 flights to STN, 2 to MAD (leaving within 15mins of each other??!?!), 1 U2 to LGW, 1 FR to Liverpool, and and air Berlin to Palma. Another FR flight arrived just after we boarded). It can become very crowded, but we mostly avoided them by checking in early, and the departure area wasn't too busy as people ran to get in the Que for their flight.

The terminal is being redeveloped somehow, but it seems more for extra check-in desks than anything for the passengers.

I could see a few flights land and take off but the views from the terminal aren't great.

Having arrived too early, we had to wait hours, and had a 20 mins delay. When the flight landed there was the usual rush of people to the gate, but it was handled quite well this time by blocking off one of the ques (usually they don't bother). Waiting outside the building, we got to the plane almost first and got OK seats at the back. We took off pretty quickly in daylight, and after a while it got dark and cloudy.

Approaching LTN it was clear again, but I couldn't take any pictures, my camera couldn't cope with the dim outside light and bright cabin lights. Usually the aircraft landed going over the vauxhall factory - the first time in 15 years or more that has happened when I've flown there.

Landing was a bit bumpy but not excessive and they stopped before the last exit and taxied past a (I think) Whizzair 767, with another plane, probably FR, landing just after us.

It wasn't too cold leaving the plane, it was very humid and about 15'C even at 9pm (it's still very humid today writing this), which was nice, because going back to England after a warm country is often a bit of a shock.

Overall a great trip and a much better flight with FR than before.

I have many, many more pics, but I'll wait to see how popular this report is first.

There might be a few mistakes in this report, like spelling, I didn't have as much time to refine it as I'd like.

Hello, Sv2008,
thanx for this interesting report, your view from southern spain!.
Strange wheather difference between the UK and spain that day.
I personally prefer pix with comments, its easier to follow when you know what the pic show us exactly, but no problem at all.

I wasn't sure if I was allowed to mention that....I didn't forget!

The Reus flight left a few mins before I started queing to board. As I got on the Murcia aircraft another aircraft went to the gate the Reus plane had just being, but I'm not sure where it was going (or where it had just been).

I had many problems with the pics for this report....I was going to add thumbnails with comments but in the end it was just taking too long.

The weather was very different! It was nice to be somewhere sunny, not that England was that cold, just had heavy rain and very humid.

I hyave many more pics.

Unfortunatly, Although I filmed great videos of both take off and landing at MJV, when I upgraded my phone software Nokia reset the video res to a lower setting so they turned out worthless. Anoying, because I was taking video I took no pics! (why anyone would want the video set to a lower res, having bought a phone with a 4GB memory, I'll never understand).

BTW the airport runway from from the aircraft you can see in the pics is ALC (Alicante) *not* MJV (Murcia)- we flew over ALC with MJV about 10mins flying time away. MJV runway is not visible from the air in any of those pics.

Actually on the way back there was really nothing.

Some problem with the catering or something, the F/A just sat in their seats for the whole trip - we never saw them once except for the safety demonstration and rubbish collection.

I had already bought some Coke (cola) from the airport because I knew the price on board was very high (£3 for 150ml I think) but it was lucky because there wasn't even water available.
