I decided to take a quick trip to Tokyo for the weekend. Having never been to Tokyo before this was going to be an experience. I got to the airport about an hour and a half early and received my Boarding Management card at the easy check-in's at the ticket counter. Off to a somewhat busy security line for ANC but nonetheless I was thru it in no time with no hassles.

Since I was on standby I had to wait for nearly everybody to board the flight before me. It was a nearly full flight and I half expected not to get on. But before too long I was called to the podium and received my boarding pass for seat 1C.

I was one of the last on the plane. Once aboard I quickly stowed my bags and took my seat. As the door was closing I wasn't offered any pre-departure drinks. Flight attendants turned on the safety demo video and before long we pushed back from gate B8.

It was a very quick taxi to runway 25R. We rolled onto the runway and were quickly cleared for takeoff. Channel 9 was on the entire flight. I listened to it until we were in no mans land over South East Alaska with nothing being broadcast.

Shortly there after the flight attendant taking care of first class came around offering a fruit and cheese plate for a snack to first class passengers. I accepted and was quickly brought a plate containing a few different varieties of cheese with assorted fruit. I wasn't expecting much considering it was a flight in the middle of the night and just over 3 hours long. It was a very nice snack though.

I tried to get as much sleep as possible since I had been up the entire previous day going to class however I wasn't able to get a whole lot of sleep.

Descent into Seattle was smooth and fairly quick. There wasn't a whole lot to be seen out the window on the descent due to low clouds in the area.

Landing was smooth, unfortunatly I don't remember the runway we landed on. A quick taxi past lots of Alaska Air and Horizon Air airplanes and we found ourselves parked at the North Satelite in Seattle.

This flight was departed and arrived on time with no hiccups along the way. After deplaning I wondered around the North Satelite before catching the train to the main terminal waiting for my flight to Tokyo. Unfortunatly it was going to be about a 8 hour layover. Having not slept much on the way down I was very tired. I found an unocupied gate in the North Satelite and slept as long as I could while waiting for my flight to Tokyo.

After an incredibly long layover in Seattle, it was time to head to the gate for my flight to Tokyo. The gate for todays flight was N9. The gate area filled up quickly with lots of families and business people awaiting the departure of the flight. I found myself a seat near the window and waited for boarding to begin.

When my name was called I found my way to the podium and was given seat 3J in the first class cabin. Since it was a fairly empty flight I was given a boarding pass right as boarding began. I decided not to board right away instead making a few last minute phone calls before leaving the country.

I found my way to the front of the plane where seat 3J was awaiting me. After I stowed my bags and took my seat a flight attendant came around offering me a pre-departure beverage. I took a glass of orange juice. The flight attendant quickly returned with my beverage as well as a menu for the dinner that was going to be served. Shortly thereafter she again returned with my noise canceling headphones, amenity kit and slippers.

The flight attendants came around the cabin again taking everybody's dinner orders then came around with newspapers. After the safety demo we pushed back from the gate and taxied to the runway. Again I didn't catch the runway. We waited for a Southwest and United plane to takeoff before we lined up on the runway. We stopped on the runway for a short while before being cleared for takeoff. Takeoff was very powerfull, I had only travelled on a 777 once before. I was very impressed with the takeoff roll. We gently lifted into the air and we were off. The sky had cleared quite a bit from my early morning arrival into Seattle and I was able to see alot more of the city on the departure. If I remember correctly departure was to the south.

Shortly after takeoff flight attendants ran thru the usual announcement of offerings on todays flight including a line up of the movies. The pilot came on and announced that the flight today was going to be approximatly 9 hours long(don't remember exactly sorry) and that the current weather in Narrita was warm and cloudy.

Flight attendants came around with drinks and warm nuts as a pre dinner snack. Shortly there after they came around with salads and appetizers for dinner. Drinks remained full the entire time and shortly after they came around with dinner. I had the steak and it was very good.

Once the meal service was complete I was exhausted. So I decided to take advantage of the lie flat beds and take a long awaited nap. I found the bed to be quite comfortable and before long I was fast asleep. I woke up to a light meal being offered by the flight attendants. I took it and quite enjoyed it.

We began our descent into Narrita and as the captain had mentioned at the beginning of the flight it was rather gloomy. We broke thru the clouds and found our way onto the runway. A short taxi later and we were parked at the gate. I exited the aircraft and found my way to the Customs and arrivals hall. Having no checked luggage I was quickly thru and found myself landside where I found my ground transportation into the city.

Sorry if I missed any details. I took this trip clear back in July and unfortunatly didn't think to take any notes so I went completely by memory. Any feedback is greatly appreciated, good or bad.

WOW!!! What a trip! I'm jealous...as a former S/A (my Dad was a mechanic for UA) I often did day trips: PDX-ORD, PDX-SFO, PDX-DEN. I did fly to Berlin for two days in May 1993 (back when UA flew LHR-TXL with a 727)

Sounds to me like 16L or 16R. You would have exited the runway, and turned back north, and you would have seen all the AS and QX planes at the main terminal before arriving at the North Satelllite.

They almost always use this gate for #875. If for some reason it's not available, the other widebody gates are N6, N10, and then N1-N3 on the opposite side. But, they remodeled N9 a few years ago, to accomodate the NRT passengers.

Ohhhhhhh....not good. Hope that isn't a common occurrence.  Sad I'd be curious to know how the NW flights are going out...they use A330.

Thanks for posting...I enjoyed the report, and have wanted to read a SEA-NRT trip report on UA. If it all works out right, I just might have the opportunity next Sept., for a study tour to Japan/S. Korea. Though I won't be in 3J...companion pass in September to NRT...maybe not.

yes, ua f sounds pretty good, but some people say the panel at the foot end of the bed is obstructive.. did you find this??

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think it was just F that was fairly empty. I know business checked in full. I remember the gate agents making the announcement to those waiting to upgrade from economy to business. I'm pretty sure Y was nearly full as well.

If I get some time I'll try to post the return trip NRT-ORD-ANC. Glad you guys liked it and thanks again for the feedback.

Nice report. Did you look out the right window on the SEA-NRT leg to take a look at ANC?

NRT-ORD-ANC must be even more frustrating, I suppose you'll fly straight over ANC, but at that time won't be there for another 10 hours or so!

If departure was to the south, you didn't see any of Seattle...Tacoma perhaps?

I was asleep on the way over but definatly felt the pain on the return leg. We passed just a few hundred miles south of ANC on the NRT-ORD leg. Nothing worse than going 6 hours in the wrong direction just to turn around and go 6 hours in the right direction.
