Hi everyone,

As there will be many (rather low quality) pictures will be involved in this report, I divided it into 3 parts.

1: IST-BKK on TK A-332
2: BKK-HKG on EK B-777-300 ER
3: HKG-IST on TK A-340-300

I will go to the army in about one month now so I decided to take a 10 day vacation in South-East Asia. I was planning for about a month but I actually bought my flights and hotels about 30 hours before the flight. I planned to stay in Pattaya for 6 days which would be a relaxing beach holiday and in Hong Kong (HK) for 3 days which would be a shopping and gourmet holiday. I changed my plans after I arrived in Pattaya but I will tell about that a bit later. I am not a very experienced trip report writer so please excuse me if I make any mistakes. Also, I have a very humble digital camera so picture quality is not very high  Smile

02 November 2006
Route: IST-BKK
Airline: Turkish Airlines (TK)
Flight: TK 60
Aircraft: Airbus 330-200, TC-JNC (named Bursa)
Seat: 22 K (Emergency Exit)
STD: 23:40
ATD: 00:10
STA:13:45
ATA:14:00
Flight Lengh: 9 hours
Speed: 560 mph or 900 km/h
Altitude: 37000-39000 ft
Weather: Very cloudy in IST, fine en-route, sunny and hazy BKK

I was very much looking forward to this flight because I had been wanting to fly TK's new 332s with the new interior including PTVs  Smile I usually don't sleep on the airplane so it's a very important detail for me. I do not have and take off pictures of this flight as it was a night flight. Amazingly, TK allows to check-in for the emergency exit seat online so I booked my seat 24 hours in advance. It has many advantages as there is always a separate counter for online check-in. I took seat 22 K. There was a window next to me but it was a bit behind me so it wasn't very ideal for taking pictures.

I arrived at the airport around 1 and a half hour before take off. I was one of the last to check in and the agent told me that the flight was pretty full but the seat next to me would be empty (hurray  Smile). I then proceeded to the passport control, smoking room, duty free area, smoking room, gate, smoking room and gate respectively  Smile Boarding stared at around 23:00 hrs. It went pretty smooth. It all went very fast but because of a few missing passengers, we left about half an hour late. Just before push-back, a rather stocky guy came and sat next to me. We pushed back at exactly mid-night.

One of the male F/A's sat right across me. I said hello to him and told him that I was an ex TK F/A too. Actually, the other F/A on the other side was a friend of mine. We talked for 10 minutes during take off about past and present and how their job is right now. They get paid much better compared to 6 years ago when I was flying  Smile Take off was not so smooth due to bad weather in IST but it got better later and we had almost no turbulence for the rest of the flight.

about 30 minutes after take off, the crew served drinks with hazelnuts and about 45 minutes after that, we were served a light cold meal although I was expecting a hot meal. It was not very tasty to be honest so I didn't eat much. I spent most of the flight playing with the PTV. There was a good choice of movies and TV shows as well as music and games. I watched "The Devil wears Prada" for the third time and "Pretty Woman" for the 100th time  Smile

Sunrise was about 4 hours after take off somewhere over southern Iran but I didn't get many pictures as everyone were sleeping and the windows needed to remain closed. About an hour and a half before landing, we were served breakfast. Once again, it was not very tasty. I usually enjoy TK's food but on this flight, it was not good and the portions were rather small.

Landing was also pretty event-less. After a few sharp banks, we landed at the new impressive BKK some 15 minutes behind schedule. I think, I SAW the old airport as well. The plane is also equipped with cameras so I also watched the city from the camera on the belly (or at least I think its somewhere on the belly  Smile )

Enough talking. Time for the pictures now  Smile I am using PhotoBucket for the first time and I hope it works fine.....

That's all for this report. I hoped you enjoyed it. Part 2 and 3 are coming very very soon. By the way, I think this was the first TK 330-200 photo report  Smile I apologize for the bad quality pictures again. My camera really sucks at night....

Thanks man... The 330 is one of my fav as well.. Overall, it was a very comfortable flight esp. because I was at the exit but the seat pitch ain't too bad elsewhere either...33-34 inches....

I have some photos of the crew and the food and the seats in fact but on the return flight which was on a 343.

My second report is ready which I will shortly post. I haven't written the 3rd one yet (the one with the pictures you want to see). It will also be ready in a few days max.

Did you ever notice that the TK bird on the tail of the A330 you flew on is too high in relation to the rest of TK's A330's?

Anyway, The A330 looks great I hope I can fly on it one day. Your pictures were kind of blurry but I don't care it was still wonderful to see and this was a good trip report too.

What types of passengers are on the IST - BKK flights? business? familys? tourists?

Hi Bahadir..

If you are flying JFK-IST or ORD-IST you will definitely have the 340 and not the 330  Sad 330s are normally used to LHR-DXB-BKK-SIN and PEK. The seats of the 330 are turquoise and very comfortable. It has the neck support as well if I am not mistaken. And the armchair stowed PTV is a lot better than the seat back ones. The size of the TV was bigger than AF and almost the same as EK and it was touchscreen too. The only problem with the exit seat is that it gets a bit cold and you have to recline your seat to see outside better.

Also note that the trays have also changed. Instead of the ugly green, you now get a pink one  Smile TK also hands out amenity kit (either pink or cream) which includes eye mask, socks, tooth brush and paste, a comb and that show thing  Smile It's called "ayakkabi cekecegi" in Turkish but don't know the English name to be honest  Smile

The seats of the 340 however are not leather and they still don't have PTVs. They are located above the middle rows. The seat pitch is 34 so its quite comfortable. If you can have 2 seats for yourself, do not miss the opportunity. I slept for 5-6 hours for the first time in my life. I put the pillow on the arm rest of the aisle seat turning my face towards the back of the seat and folded my legs. I used the second blanket to cover the gap between the seats.

It sure is a great development for TK. I hope the 340s will get the new cabin ASAP. And when the cabin crew starts smiling a bit more, we can eventually be a 4 star airline  Smile My pictures are low in quality because I am using a bad bad camera  Wink

IST-BKK flights are ALWAYS full. The pax is a mix of business and leisure travellers. Thailand is one of the most popular winter sun destinations for Turks. Its cheap, visa free and easily accessible. When I took a baht bus in Pattaya, I sat together with a group of 6 middle aged Turkish women who were on a 1 week package tour... Turkish tour operators sell BKK, Pattaya, Ko Samui, Ko Chang and Phuket for very good prices usually combining Thailand with Malaysia, Singapore or HKG. I don't think the VFR traffic between IST and BKK is very high...

On the other hand, the rather emptier flight between HKG and IST was dominantly business travellers who attend various fairs in HKG or neighbouring Chinese cities...

This is really great trip report. Few days ago, I got the first TK in-flight magazine in years (the previous one was from early 1990s when A310 was the star of the fleet) and the way how THY is growing is simply amazing. I'm very glad they are flying to BEG again.

Reading about TK's 332 is very interesting and you did a good job. Now, in order to get some practice, treat us with more similar stuff.

Quoting ThereAndBack (Reply 14):

I do. TC-JNCs tail logo is definitely a bit higher.

Any idea of what that funny cupboard-thing is in the first cabin pic (where a toilet or crew rest access would usually be).
