Date: Novemeber 27th, 2006
Northwest Airlines Flight: 1578
Destination: MBS (Saginaw/Bay City/Midland, Michigan) to DTW
Seat: 9A (Window)
Equipment: McDonnell Douglas DC-9-5

Waking up at 4:15 AM had its advantages that morning because I was able to get my things together and to make it out to the airport on time. My plane was to depart at 8:15 AM, so my mother and I had to drive to the airport at 6AM to make it there by 6:45. We were on schedule and being that I had pre-printed my boarding passes on nwa.com, the only thing I had to do was to check my baggage in.

I must say that MBS is a nice small little airport in the heart of the tri-cities area of Michigan. Despite the fact that NW is the dominant airline there, UA also provides non-stop service from ORD not to mention other destinations to my knowledge.

Being that luggage check-in/security checks went efficiently, I had some time to spare and to partake of some breakfast. After breakfast, I headed with my mother to the waiting area just before the passenger security check point and gate area. We sat there for a while waiting for the security line to die down a little bit before I headed off to the gates. Along with my flight, there were two other NW flights departing around the same times, one to MSP and another one to DTW. I gave my farewells to my mother and then went through the short security line into the gate area. I was very glad that I went into line when I did, because after that, the line became about 4 times the length than what it was to begin with!

I waited at the gate (6) until they boarded the first class and Northwest Elite passengers, then then I boarded the plane and made my way to seat 9A. I was very lucky to get window seats on 3 out of the four flights I made on this trip as this was a holiday period.

A rainy morning at MBS (Taken from Seat 9A)

After waiting for the luggage to be loaded 15 minutes later, we pushed back and made our way to Runway 23 where we were to take-off. At 8:15 AM we made our way off the runway and over the west side of Saginaw, MI where I could see Saginaw Valley State University, a school that I had once attended, along with many other familiar sites. Since it was raining that morning, we quickly lifted above a white blanket of clouds and ascended into the morning sky. Since the flight duration was only 22 minutes, there was no refreshment service. We then finally touched down on Detroit Metro-Wayne County's Runway 22L.

Date: Novemeber 27th, 2006
Northwest Airlines Flight: 893 DTW - JFK
Equipment: McDonnell Douglas DC-9-31 (N924RW)
Seat: 15F (Window)

After debarking from the Saginaw flight at gate A67, I made my way to for a restroom break and then off to Terminal A9. Since the distance was away, I took the red train in the EM Terminal. The flight to JFK quickly boarded after waiting at A9 for about 30 minutes and I was sitting very comfortably in my seat, 15F, also a window seat.

From what I could tell, we lifted off Runway 3R at approximately 10:09 and we were in the air for about 1 hour 7 minutes. It was pretty overcast and turbulence was present, however, that changed once we made our way over Lake Erie. The beverage service was very nice and I had a nice Canada Dry Ginger Ale. Having a seat also over the wing was pretty nice as I was able to see the use of flaps and spoilers. I was able to tell of our descent by this and at around 11:25 AM, I could see the skyline of Manhattan along with the clear view of Brooklyn. After we made our way across Queens and over the Atlantic ocean off the south shore of Long Island, we started our steep descent, with a hard bank to the right, towards the Canarsie area of Brooklyn (also known as the "Canarsie Approach"). As we were making finals, I was thinking in my head "Please do not put us into 4R or 4L again!", being that everytime I have come back from Michigan on NW, that has been the case and have landed on those two too many times. We quickly made our touchdown on Runway 13L at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport at 11:45 a.m. right on schedule.

Once debarked, I quickly made my way to the luggage claim area and waited for about 30 minutes. Once I retrieved my luggage, I hopped on the JFK Airtrain to Jamaica Station, then on the Q44 bus to my home in Queens.

This was a great trip on NW and the FA's were very friendly on this flight. I hope this reoccurs in the future.
