FRA To LYS On A Nice Clear Day, LH (B733), 14 Pix

Mon, Nov 26, 2006. LH4172, FRA 120pm to LYS 235pm, Boeing B737-300, D-ABEW, Seat 5A.

One day after flying back to Frankfurt from Helsinki (more info on that trip here), I was back at FRA to catch a flight to Lyon. The real destination of my trip was actually Grenoble, but flying to LYS and then taking a car (it's only an hour or so) seemed easier than the other alternatives.

I reached the airport pretty early (two hours an a half or so; I wanted to get some work done at the lounge) and I went straight to one of the check-in kiosks. It found all my flight information but, somehow, it was not recognizing my AC Aeroplan number (I'm *A Gold BTW). And then, shock!, no window seats available! Oh, bloody great... I was looking forward to taking some pictures. Damn. I chose an aisle seat towards the back and then moved towards security. The line was pretty light. I showed the transparent bag with my toothpaste and deodorant, put my hand luggage through the x-ray machine, and walked through the metal detector. No problems. I then tried to find my gate, as well as the nearest LH lounge.

I had to walk a good 10-15 mins (one of the reasons I hate FRA's A gates; there's always too much walking involved!) before I reached the Senator lounge; the gate (A30) was nearby too. Cool. I got in the lounge and asked the receptionist whether she could add my AC number to the reservation. Tap tap tap, done. In the off-chance, I also asked her whether there were any window seats available. Tap tap tap, of course! There were some right at the front, but these are reserved for frequent flyers (and, given that the kiosk was not recognizing my number, it couldn't give them to me). Would 5A do? Absolutely! Thank you. What a nice lady...

I then got some work done at the lounge while nibbling some of the snacks that were available (they were pretty good too; I liked the meatballs). Finally, it was time to walk towards the gate. The monitors showed the flight to be on time. And on time we started boarding. I got comfortable on my seat and I was delighted to see that the middle seat was empty. Great! I could snap away happily without worrying about elbowing the person sitting next to me (the rest of the plane was very very full though). Also, it was great to be back on board a classic B737... I had started overdosing on the A320s. While we boarded, a TAP A320 was parked next to us.

Eventually, we pushed back

and taxied towards the runway. It was not really busy and we reached the runway pretty speedily

Shortly afterwards, we started our take-off roll. It was a nice clear day and, during the climb, the view from the window was very nice and worth carrying my camera with me!

Shortly after take-off the F/As offered a snack

It consisted of a very small sandwich (ham and cheese I think it was...), a chocolate / rice crispy bar, and a drink (I think I had apple juice). It was fine for such a short flight and more than what AA gives me on the 6-hour BOS-SFO flights (grrrr...).

During the flight, the weather continued to be gorgeous

Eventually, we reached the Alps, which you can see in the background.

BTW, this picture also made it to a.net!!!

We carried on flying parallel to the Alps and we flew not that far off lake Geneva and, unless I got my geography totally wrong (and boy I was crap at geography at school...), Lausanne

(BTW, I really love the above photo and I was totally pissed that the engine reflected on the window, as I think it would have made a nice a.net addition too... oh well...)

When we reached the other side of lake Geneva, we could also see Geneva and got a very distant view of GVA too:

Eventually we started our descent towards LYS. It was a bit hazy but, still, the landscape looked very beautiful:

We touched down a few mins early

and a couple of minutes later we were at the gate.

Overall, a nice and quiet short flight with some gorgeous views over central Europe. I wish more flights were like that!

Happy Holidays everyone!

Tony

PS I was so busy looking outside that I forgot to take pictures of the safety cards... Sorry!

funny about the snacks on foriegn airlines...they give you a stern look and a half a sprite on a 4 hour flight in the states and on many of the jaunts i took in asia, i got a great meal!

great report!

Hey, Tony,
another great and detailed report.
It´s always interesting to read Intra-European reports from Non-Europeans,
simply another point of view!.
I agree about the long ways to walk at FRA, no problem with enough time,
but not the best with short connections.
Regards,
Markus (FLIEGER67)

Next: London City connections!.

I think this the sandwich is LH's "standard" short-flight snack.

Hey, BA serves a full hot breakfast between GLA and LHR if you fly in the morning! Yeah, I still haven't got used to the notion of getting no food in long US transcons (and my usual trip in the US is BOS-SFO); still stuck in the past I suppose...

Even though FRA is huge, I never really had to test how quickly you can make a connection. Whever I needed to connect there I always seem to have several hours of hanging around before my next flight. I'm flying to FRA tomorrow in fact and I have a 6-hour layover before my flight to EDI on Saturday. Thank God for LH's lounges and the excellent showers they have!  bigthumbsup

Nice report and great pics. I have been to Grenoble 3 times, and each time I flew into LYS and then drove. LYS is a nice little airport, although a nonstop from the U.S. would be awesome.

I did it again this month! (flew LYS-FRA-BOS last Saturday...)

About 1 hour to 1 hour 10 mins.

Quoting Nijltje (Reply 12):
Do you have a star lounge in LYS?

Yes and no. There is one (called the Mont Blanc lounge) that you can get an invitation for when you check-in (so, it's not only for *A as far as I could see). Unfortunately, it's outside security and it's not all the nice (too small and way too gloomy).

Safe flying!

Tony

Hey, just back from the trip, indeed the lounge is LYS is not really something to write over.

The SEN lounge in FRA is ok but the people at the reception are not that friendly and when trying to book a earlier flight to BRU she informed me that it was not possible in B class.....after 3 times and 20 min it's was ok but then the gate was closed.

I really love the 737-300-500 I hope they will keep them a few years more

Yep. In fact, the airport is nothing to write home about!  Sad The terminal where LH leaves from is terrible...
