Firstly, this report is over a year old, i posted this over on another forum awhile back, but kept forgetting to post it here, but anyways, here it is.

MH 131 To Auckland, New Zealand….

Flight : MH0131
Date : 27/01/2006
Time : Boarding 2025, ETD 2115
A/C : 9M-MPH - Langkawi

This journey to New Zealand to meet up with parents and family to celebrate Chinese New Year was in my mind the whole way through this month, even though I had mock exams, this still managed to distract me.. The Good fortune of getting upgraded to Golden Club Class was also fantastic.. that’s the good thing about enrich miles I suppose..

But anyway, with mock exams over and done with, results all taken, and them being not bad at all, I had nothing to fear (from parents) on the morning of 27th January. But without sleeping much last night (roommates doing business coursework), I finally got up and tidied up, did my laundry, stripped my bed, and just made sure that I had everything for my trip to NZ.

My Room after packing… well.. its my bed at least.. not much to shout about…

For those that don’t know, im currently a Grade 10 Student at United World College of South East Asia in Singapore. Im a boarder there aswell, as I have been for the past 5 years. The rooms aren’t bad, the boarding house has 64 people max, and it’s a mixed house, with separate floors for boys and girls, so its fun, having good friends of the opposite sex. Although houseparents are very strict about being in a girls room etc.. (instant suspension!!)

Anyways, this is my crazy roommate… its 7.45am, and school starts in 15 minutes.. and he hasn’t showered yet… crazy…

The boarding house rooms overlook our second Astroturf, primarily used for cricket and netball, so heres a shot from my room window, my beds right next to the window.. haha..

So after lugging my luggage down 4 stories, I was waiting with my friends who were all going back for our CNY break (1 to Thailand, 1 to KL, 4 to Myanmar..)

Finally, our bus has arrived!! I know about Airbus, but how bout School Bus?!

This is what people travel to school in everyday, me on the other hand? Walk…

So as we drove down the school drive, the tiredness began to hit me.. really hard… in the head… so this is the last shot I took… my… ‘home’ for the last 5 years, and for the next 2. ill only be out of here in May, 2008
Next thing I know, my roommate is smacking me on the shoulder with his bag telling me to wake the f*** up… dunno whats the rush.. as if ive never been to the airport before… here is changi’s famous control tower

And here is a shot of Changi Terminal 2, SQ Check in

Malaysia Airlines Check in, Airbus A330-200 to KLIA

As my flight was only at 13.45, and I was at the airport at 0900 (please don’t ask why), we decided to go to McD! And sat there playing Football Manager on my laptop for 3 odd hours

All I can remember about the flight to KL was sitting in the middle seat in the A330 talking to my friend the whole flight through… talking to her made the time fly, which was cool, but also stopped me from taking shots for you guys.. Sorry!!

sometime between this point, and getting to KL, its all a blur to me, so ill just skip to KL Airport.

I walked up to the Business Class counter with shaking hands… I haven’t flown business for ages, and I was sincerely looking forward to being on the upper deck of a 747 again, and was praying for a refurbished 747

My hands were shaking in this photo.. if it wasn’t so minimized, you’d see the blur..

So after getting hands on my Ticket, and getting into Seat 7C (aisle, no window cause all the seats were taken by transiting passengers from Europe.)

After going through immigration which was a breeze with the Malaysian Passports and those autogates.

Onboard the aerotrain, as we approached the satellite, I saw a Gulf Air, and Royal Brunei parked along the Satellite terminal. Registrations were as follows.

Royal Brunei

Gulf Air

And then, I saw a beautiful blue bird Big grin Big grin

And as Pieter mentioned, its clean after coming back from a D-Check

Nose Shot anyone? I still think the 747 has the nicest lines, not like that other flying whale that’s going to be wearing MH colours in the near future…

KLM Pushback Shots

KLM Taxing, Meets CX Pencil… Shorter 2 engine version

And then, After getting some rice and rendang from the self service buffet in the lounge…

Alor Setar getting Towed into Gate C1

My Attempt at a Tail Shot

Soon, Kuantan (9M-MPC) was taxing in, arrival from unknown

Soon, 9M-MKB Joined her at the gate

The Golden Lounge

The lounge was wonderful, the food was good, constantly getting refilled, and warmed on those buffet tray things… Although the rice was abit overdone, the Lamb Rendang was well done, and very tasty. Other things were served such as sandwiches, fruit, bread, cakes etc. Beverages were always available, from Soft Drinks and local stuff such as soya milk, Cin Cau etc in the fridges, there was also a bar you could order lattes and fresh coffee from.

But overall, the lounge had a very nice ambience to it, very relaxing, and very comfortable chairs.. although the floors could have been better maintained with some spills and crumbs on the carpet.

Other Things to do in the lounge…

Internet, there is free wireless, which was good to kill time, as I was on MSN chatting most of the time, talking to Imran among other things…

But here is my Ticket to NZ
They spelt my name wrong, is that a good thing?

I took a shower there, very nice, very clean, the attendants gave you a towel, with Aigner body wash and shampoo included, and toothbrush/toothpaste, very very very nice..

So after taking a refreshing shower, it was time to leave the lounge after 5 hours…

A shot of the Satellite terminal from the second floor

Here on the Travellator to Gate C27, where my 747-400 was waiting to take me to NZ

As much as I was wishing for a new Plane to be at the gate, especially MPB/MPD, It was to no avail, in front of me was the big nose of 9M-MPH (Langkawi), no new Business class seats, but what the heck!! Business is business!! And I still have the return leg to hope for…

Here is a shot of the upper deck of 9M-MPH, with the old seats

The Flight soon got on its way, as I was one of the first on board, I took time looking around, and realizing that the bags were not going to fit in those tiny baggage holders on the roof, and realized how a spacious a triple 7 really was… And as I was looking for magazines and such, I saw the pilots walk through to their office, all of them looked very young, of Indian or malay origin. The pilots for the Flight was Captain Vijay, and First Officer Charles..

The cabin quickly filled up, and business class was completely full for the flight, the attendants serving us was a young Chinese looking lady, Pricilla Phoon, and I cant remember what the Leading Sterwardess was named. Newspapers, Magazines were being offered to all on board, and then the customary towelletes, which was quite refreshing, as I would have probably fell asleep before dinner if not for those..

Takeoff was incredibly quiet, that must be because I was above the engines and forward of it, it seemed a light takeoff, although im sure it wasn’t, but then plane tilted up, and then we set upon our 10 hour journey to Auckland, New Zealand…

If I remember correctly, our routing was KLIA-Bali-Brisbane-Auckland or something along those lines. We would be cruising at FL330 for this journey.

After taking off, the headphones and menus were handed out (I don’t have the menu with me as im sitting in a hotel room in Napier doing this now, when I get back to Auckland ill include the menu for you guys), and dinner would be served shortly..

I realized that I haven’t been in Business for at least 4 years now, and haven’t had satay in general for a very long time, and as imran requested before I even left Singapore, he wanted the food dedicated to him… So here goes bro!

Chicken and Beef Satay

Definitely didn’t last long, here are the remains seen with my Campari

And as the main course was being served, I was really disappointed to not see the cabin crew come around with the dinner trolley, serving you directly onto your china from the trolley, even business class meals come pre-packaged now… I don’t think this is a good thing, makes the whole experience seem very very cheap…

But here is my main course, something or other chicken breast.

The meat was a little dry, although the fried rice that came with it was good, and the appetizer and the desert was good aswell! I think even though with its widely marketed cuisine experiences and stuff, this was a real Letdown, MH Business class was so much better than this!

But the substandard food didn’t stop a hungry stomach…

After declining coffee, I promptly went to sleep…

But before sleeping, I played around with the old Select entertainment system, and as there was nothing good on TV, or the movies, I was looking around the Music Section, and I tried opening the James Blunt Album to Play a song, my system promptly froze at this point. As I’ve been feeling very weird for the past year or so, I was quite proud I managed to hang it, I’ve hung my notebook, my PS2, my cousins computer, but MH744 AVOD? Hahahhaah… was quite proud of myself.. And probably had a smile on my face as I reclined my seat and went to bed with “You’re Beautiful by James Blunt” playing in my headphones (mp3 Player)

The Old seat was quite comfortable, although the buttons are getting quite a bit of wear and tear, it still serves faithfully, which the recline wasn’t what I was hoping for, it was still good.. Comfortable, with enough support, with the head rest in just the right place, it was quite easy for me to fall asleep.

Albeight waking up a few times during the night, which I saw the stewardess frequently checking on people, pulling up blankets for sleeping people etc, it was a good flight, and I realize why Malaysia Airlines is so renowned for its in-flight service.

Also, the crew soon handed out the traveling kits, which I haven’t opened yet, but when I do ill post some photos…

And on to Breakfast…

Once the tablecloths were set up, there was a tray with a bowl of cornflakes on it, with the crew asking if you wanted skim or full cream milk…

And to what I was looking forward too, NASI LEMAK!!

The Captain came on again after breakfast, telling us that we were at FL370, and about to descend to land at Auckland International Airport..

And here we are seconds from touchdown

I was originally in an Aisle seat, and as I was pathetically trying to take photos through the window from there, the gentleman in the seat next to me asked if I would like to trade places, and I did.. Big grin Big grin

A Korean, Singaporean and Thai at the Terminal

And here is an Airline we dont see much in KLIA
And here is the Air New Zealand Boeing 767-300 ZK-NCI

And here is a photo of the soon to be replaced GCC Seats!

And to Cap and Excellent flight with (in my biased opinion) the best airline and crew flying, here is one final photo

My Lovely Bird, Named after the beautiful white sandy island we call Langkawi,

Overall, I would rate MH the following

Food – 8/10
Entertainment – N/A
Service – 10/10
Comfort – 9/10

And Overall a 9/10.. wonderful flight

hope this gives you guys a taste of the old GCC, and please comment and ask any questions...

Great trip report!

See that you are at UWCSEA, how is the school. I myself attended the UWCAC a few years back but when we lived in Singapore, my mother taught languages at the school, heard it is quite different as you have other boarders as well.

Nice report! MH always has great food.

I used to go to UWCSEA myself between 1996 and 1999! I had many friends who were boarders and they would always tell me what a blast they were having. Eric, what language did your mother teach?
I took French there.

wow, seems like a lot of aviation enthusiasts go to UWCSEA. I know someone there now who is madly into planes.

Nice TR, do those seats have PTVs?

Me: (Lining up on final) I shall now select an aiming point. || Instructor: Well, I hope it's the runway...

Oh, my mother did Scandinavian languages back in the 1980's. I attended AC '00-'02. Did not really think there were any other UWC's here.

haha, i keep hearing that from other teachers and students that have been to the other colleges, but find it quite normal myself, with regards to boarders there and stuff, its a good experience, and the people you meet are great

yep, they're located in the armrest, 11" if i remember correctly, biggest in the sky at one point or something along those lines. But since i jammed up the system, it hung when i was browsing through music, i decided to give it a break and sleep instead. haha

This is indeed very unusual for a long haul over-nighter down under.

This is what an MAS GC meal should look like, nicely presented on a proper plate.

As much as I am looking forward to an upgraded product for GC, I really have no complaints about the old seats. They are indeed a comfortable place to be in for long flights. I have had some great times there to and from SYD / BNE and I sure miss those times I flew GC on long flights.

Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!
