AMERICAN AIRLINES - LONDON HEAHTROW TO BOSTON LOGAN



As X-mas was soon comming it was time to head across the pond to Boston to spend Christmas of 2006. I decided to fly American Airlines due to the cheap fare being offered on AA.com. AA also appealed to me as I decided to fly from Boston to Miami a few days later to catch some winter sun. The flight was around $200 less than other carriers such as VS and BA.

We decided to stay at a hotel the night before in Heathrow as the flight departed in the mid-morning. We stayed at the Jury's Inn Hotel which is located next to BA's Heathrow Maitenence base.

We arrived at a busy Terminal 3 during the mid-morning rush. American Airlines had several check-in counters open for Business, First and Main Cabin passengers. I must say the check-in area at LHR is pretty poor compared to other AA larger cities. At this time near to our check-in counters there were flights heading to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific, aswell as to Jeddah/Riyadh on Saudi Arabian Airlines along with multiple Virgin Atlantic flights.

Check-in was pretty slow today during the holiday rush. There was several flights being checked in at the same time. Miami passengers had priority as the flight was due to depart soon.

After being checked in by the nice AA London staff we made our way upstairs and looked around the shops before immigration. We then decided to join the long line at immigration in Terminal 3. Thankfuly the line was moving quite fast and there was around 5-6 screening areas open.

I also had to take part in a random check; which involved taking my shoes off. I then arrived into the big duty free area which is simply great compared to American airports.

After doing some duty free shopping I decided to head to the gates to take some photo's of the large amount of widebodies that T3 offers.

After taking a few photo's of T3 aircraft, boarding was then called for American Airlines flight 109 to Boston Logan. We entered the lounge and waited until we could enter the aircraft. After about a 10 minute wait they announced boarding for First and Business passengers. Boarding at AA was done differently to other airlines I've experianced. Rather then annoucing by seating rows; they are done in groups. For example group six would be towards the back of the aircraft. Personaly I think this is a good idea and is better than annoucing it by seat rows. When was this introudcued, I cannot remember it during my last AA encounter?

We entered the aircraft through door 2L. We walked through the Business class cabin which seemed not even half as good as airlines such as British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific and so on. What is the price like compared to other airlines for AA's Business class cabin?

I eventualy made it to my seat which was seat 34J in the Main Cabin. The cabin crew welcomed us on board and made a nice first impression to the passengers.

The Main Cabin was in a 2-5-2 configuration which made the 2 seating seem very spacious. I must admit I do like this configuration.

Today's flight to Boston was to be flown by N791AN which was delivered in 2000. The aircraft previously came from MIA as AA182. The aircraft was located at gate 19 in Terminal 3.

The captain annoucned that push back will be soon and the flight will depart soon. As we pushed back from Terminal 3 the safety video was shown. The crew then welcomed themself and the pilot gave the flight information of today's flight. The captain named Bob announced that our flight today would take only 6h 30m and it was a beautiful day to fly. As you can see from my pictures, LHR is very dull today. There was quite a bit of traffic at LHR and in the London area. The captain then said we were to fly at 39,000ft throughout the journey into Boston. We were to off to the west and head towards Cardiff, Wales before heading onto Shannon, Ireland and then across the Atlantic, over Nova Scotia, Canada and down the Maine coast into Boston.

We waited in line for takeoff for around 10mins, and then the captain announced we were 3rd in line for take-off. In front of our aircraft was a UAL 777, AC 763 and a few BA A32S's. Takeoff was on runway 09R.

As we reached our initial cruising altitude of 37,000ft a drinks service was offered to passengers. We were given a choice of drinks for free excluding alcohol which cost $5 or £3 each. I was suprised that full size soda cans were offered to passengers rather than the mini-cans often offered.

The flight then encourted some turblence off the west coast of Ireland, so the captain announced we would rise to 40,000ft for the rest of the flight.

Later on a lunch service was offered to passengers again with a drinks offering. There was a choice of Beef or Chicken. I had the chicken and it was served with vegtables and pasta; and a dessert which was a lemon pie. Also offered was water and a bread roll.


As we headed towards Canada another meal service was offered which was a snack. In the snack box there was the following items:


  • Sundried Tomato Flavoured Crackers
  • KitKat
  • The Laughing Cow Cheese Spread
  • Fruit Flakes
  • Mini Pringles Original Flavour
  • Walkers Short Bread Sticks


During our meal service, a drinks service was again offered to passengers.

As we reached the gate, connecting OneWorld and American Airlines information was given out to passengers. There was a delay at the gate as the AA ground crew had to get from Terminal B to E early as the flight arrived early. We were gifted by comedy comments from the captain.

He was very informative throughout the flight. He also reminded us that we were still early a few times, in a funny way!!

Whilst waiting for gate to connect to the aircraft a Alitalia 767 arrived from MXP.

We arrived into Terminal E which was very modern and clean. I was very impressed by the terminal. Immigration was slightly slow as not many counters were open. After going through immigration we then went and collected our luggauge which was very efficent and fast.

I decided to take some photo's of Terminal E as my next flight would be from Terminal B.

In early 2000 i would say.

And the Business Class Fares are pretty much the same. No matter if you fly on AA old Y Class or on BA.

My goodness, I never realised how antiquated LHR is until now. The last time I came across such an old looking flight information TV monitor was at CGK and BDO.

That being said, the amount of aircraft movements seem astounding. Planes all over the place!

Thank you for your trip report. I enjoyed the pics and videos of AA 777's because it is my favorite airplane. You saw a lot of them at LHR because AA has flights from BOS, JFK, ORD, MIA and LAX. JFK and ORD have multiple flight so you see lots of AA 777's arriving from early morning to afternoon, and you see them departing from early morning to evening.
If you ever fly AA to NRT you will see several 777's (not as many as at LHR)
from JFK, DFW, ORD and LAX. AA discontinued flights from SJC in late October.

In reference to boarding groups I tried looking this up on our employee website (I am retired AA living in Japan). I could not find exactly when, but I think AA started this 3 or 4 years ago.

AA is in the process of upgrading the business class cabin of it's 767-300's and 777's. The new seats will be lie flat business class seats. When I was with AA as a reservations supervisor, I constantly heard passengers complaining that we did not have sleeper seats in business. We will soon!
I always enjoy seeing trip reports on AA since I am retired AA, but I am sorry to hear your experience on return flights was not as good. (I'm very glad to hear you had a good experience on your LHR-BOS flight). Very often the service a customer gets from AA (and I am talking about all phases...reservations, at the airport, in flight etc) will determine whether AA has a loyal customer or the passenger takes his or her business elsewhere. I do hope your future flights on AA will be as good as this one.

LHR is indeed quite dated. Saying that; JFK terminal 8 is much, much, much more of a dated dump  Wink

It certainly is, one of the things I love about LHR. I've also seen LHR alot bussier before.

I completely forgot about mentioning the service, guess the jetlag is catching up  Wink

LHR Ground Crew - Typical London based crew, nice enough and just happy to do their job. Nothing to special and just your'e average ground crew.

AA Cabin Crew - Nice crew onboard this flight, I was very impressed by the overall performance of the crew on this flight. Saying that, the AA crews just seem to do their jobs, and nothing over the top like the majority of Asian carriers.

Boston Airport Terminal E -Nice terminal and very clearn and modern. I was very impressed upon arrival into Boston. The AA crew took their time to get to the gate; but they were kind upon arrival.

Aircraft - The Boeing 777 is a great aircraft, I've enjoyed flying it in the past and will continue to again and again. The only downfall is the amount of noise compared to other aircraft within the cabin. I love the wing flex of this aircraft and the 2-5-2 seating is very spacious for the two aisle seating pairs. The cleanliness of the cabin was excellent.

Food and Beverages - The main meal offered on this flight was typicaly presented and was very nice. The snack was also equaly nice and the food offered was adaquite. The cost of alchohol was a bit of a shock to what I'm usualy used to, but at least soft drinks were offered for free. A few passengers noted at the end of the flight about the lack of free alcholic beverages offered. One passenger commented: "Fly Virgin Altantic or BA" to which the other passengers agreed to.

In-Flight Entertainment - Inflight entertainment offered on this flight was above average. It seemed to take ages for the crew to start the programming after take-off. The offerings were good, but AVOD would be quite welcomed in the future. I watched two episodes of King of Queens and a few other films. The service is then repeated.

Thanks, the 777 is also one of the favourite aircrafts of mine. I know that AA has a huge fleet of 777's having flown them alot in the past.

When I was at LHR in 2005 you could go any where airside and got some really great photos and even go back in to the departure mall er... lounge when you have explored the entire gate area. Maybe I just did not look threatening enough to be hassled.  biggrin   bigthumbsup

Regarding zone boarding: I like this system. It prevents people from "sneaking" onboard before they are called. It always amazes me when boarding is done by rows how some people can't either count or simply don't care. Example: rows 20-30 are called and some dummy in row 18 joins the line thinking "it's just two rows, it doesn't matter." Well, it does you fool!

Anyway, nice report. Are you planning to do one for the BOS-MIA flight?

Thanks, you will have no problems at Heathrow one bit. If they ask you to move then just continue down the hall. The staff do not mind, It is not illegal in the UK. The shots are just from inside the terminal simply walking around. Sometimes you may be approached by the police or ground staff, just simply suggest you are intrested in aviation.

It's actualy 2-5-2 like UA. The configuration is very roomy and much better than EK's 3-4-3  Wink

Thanks, I love flying into Boston, the approach down the coast is nice (make sure you sit on the right side of the aircraft  Wink)

This flight specificly would be 7/10. Comparable with my Air India flights to JFK, but no way as good as my BA flights to the USA. AA offered more choices on the PTV's than Air India, the crews were vey similar. The AA 777 is proably in a better condition than the AI 744's. BA simply beats the airlines in all categories (except Y seating, which I prefer AA in Y).

Tibidabo hill. It is a great bar with a great view. it is a must!!!
