Hello!
Last summer, in June and July, a good friend and I went to Hong Kong and Thailand for vacations. That meant a few flights to get over there, and to travel around inside Thailand (10 flights in total). That also meant that a trip report would have to be written. It got delayed as I was too lazy to edit and resize my pictures, and to write the whole thing.
You can click the following link to read the report:

Tres beau voyage Alex!! You brought back memories of my trip to South East Asia 2 years ago! Although I didn't go to Koh Samui and Krabi... It's in the plans!

Amazing report and pictures! I've heard some good things about JAL; they sound like a really good airline.

When I flew on JAL in 1978 the meals in Y were bigger and we had a choice of Japanese or Western. My Japanese friends all travel with ANA which they say is better than JAL.
Fabulous report. Love the layout and pictures. Thank you.

Great report with some excellent photos. I concure with your Emirates verdict, good food with some lackluster service.

It was my first time on an Asian carrier and I could already see a huge gap between service qualities on JAL versus service qualities on some North American or European carriers.
How true. Even on the intra-Asia segments on these US carriers that are staffed by the Asian crew, service is miles ahead when compared to the trans-Pacific sectors. However, the same cannot be said for Chinese (excluding Taiwanese carriers CAL and EVA) carriers though. They still lag far behind in terms of inflight service.
It was served with marinated seafood with sweet sour bean vermicelli...
Woah... what the hell is that?
We deplaned by bus, got our bags, and had a cab ride to Novotel Phuket.
That is a truly wonderful hotel. It is the one that is perched on top of the hill at the northern end of Patong right? I stayed there some trips back and I had a great time. Awesome views. In fact, some of the video footage of the tsunami destruction was filmed from the balcony at the edge of the hotel's pool area... Come to think of it, I was in Phuket a few weeks after you left.
I think only military were allowed to play there…can anyone confirm?
Indeed it is... The opposite end (eastern side) of Don Muang is 100% military.
Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

Very good pics of the airplanes and of Thailand and Hong Kong. Hong Kong is one of my favorite cities and your report makes me want to go back there.
How long was the ORD-NRT flight?

To be honest...I don't remember hehe. That's what my flight notes said.

Indeed it is. A very nice hotel, in fact I didn't know the Novotel brand could be such a good product. The highlights of it were probably the room itself and the breakfast, in which I could get whatever I wanted. Plus the staff was very pleasant.
But to me, the hotel was the only good point of Phuket. Patong beach is such a big tourists trap.
I think the outbound flight to Tokyo is about 13 hours long. We did fly quite a different route on the inbound flight to O'hare, and cut the flight time to 10 hours and 40 minutes.

Normally on the flights to Tokyo the flights take a more northerly route to avoid headwinds. Flying out of Tokyo they fly further south to take advantage of the tailwinds. So usually the flights to Tokyo are about 2 hours longer than the flights out of Tokyo

Excellent report! Just one small note: Don Muang airport is not closed after Suvarnabhumi opened, it's actually still being used by some domestic and charter carriers. On international flights though (esp. long-haul), you're unlikely to end up in Don Muang nowadays.

You are right. I didn't think about that fact while writting the report. Should have thought about it
Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 15): Phuket is just a fantastic place to relax, love it.
Well.. depends of what you're looking for. I personnaly didn't find Phuket to be relaxing at all! I guess it depends where you go on the island, as I've only been to Patong beach..
Now Koh Tao, Railay beach... that's another story! That's relaxing!

Great report. Enjoyed all the details and beautiful pictures. Can't believe you didn't like the Japanese beer on the JL flight. I find Kirin Ichiban, Sapporo and especially Asahi Super Dry to be excellent beers. Were you actually sitting in row 47 ??? on a TG 737 or is it a typo ?

Looks like the idea is to have First Class start at Row 1, Business Class start at Row 11, and Economy Class start at Row 31, no matter what type of aircraft.

Very nice report!
Quoting BPS3458 (Reply 20): Thanks for that clarification. Any idea why they start with row 31 in Y ?
Easier equipment substitution. Especially on popular domestic routes (to Phuket, Chiang Mai) there is a wide range of equipment operated. What may be a 737 normally could easily be replaced by a 777 or 747 or Airbus another day. This way at least people should still have seats in the correct cabin.
Of course, if it is an equipment downgrade it doesn't work quite as well.
"What do you mean there's no seat K on this 737!?"
