Good Morning everyone. I fell asleep around 1am and woke up at 3.30. I got ready to go; made sure I had everything and eagerly awaited my cab to come at 4.15am. The night before, my parents told me that in the event the cab is not there at 4.15am, wake us up. I called around 4am to confirm that it is coming and they said they are having some trouble finding a cab and that it should be there soon. 4.15 rolls around and I’m standing outside in the cold waiting for it to come. I call again and they said that they are still having trouble finding a cab and that it should be there in 10 minutes.
I did not have 10 minutes so I woke up my parents and told them, they are having some trouble getting a cab and that it would be here in 10 minutes. At 4.30 my dad took me and I apologised. He said it was ok and that the taxi company was ‘assholes’. The cab company called just as I was to be getting on the highway. I quickly hit number 1 to cancel the cab.
I ended up getting to Terminal 2 at 4.45 only to be greeted with a big line. I was surprised as to who would be awake this early on New Year’s Day. I tried to check in using Northwest’s kiosks since I had 2 bags to check but it wouldn’t let me so I had to wait in line. I gave Eric a call stating that I was at the airport and waiting in line to check in.
At 5.15, I was checked in to New Orleans via Memphis. I actually got a paper ticket as I was directed to the first class check-in although I was flying economy. I don’t have Elite status! Rather than those thin pieces of paper that comes out of the machines. I put both of my bags on the scale and totally it weighed approximately 72 pounds. One suitcase was 37.5 and the other was 34.5. I was thrilled. I seriously thought I went over 50. Then I had to find my way through security.
Security was a different story. Since Terminal 2 is under construction, there is scaffolding everywhere. I was behind 2 girls and I was almost at the metal detector when one of the security staff asks to one of the girls “Where is your boarding pass?” “It’s in my bag.” She had to go get it so I was able to just go through while she fetched her boarding pass.
By then it was nearly 5.45 and I needed a Starbucks. I decided to get a Caramel Frap and walk to gate E11. But I didn’t finish it all. It was too early. I did not have a boarding time on my boarding pass so I did wonder what time we would board. As I drank my drink and sat next to a cold window, I did notice many Notre Dame Fans. They all sat down and talked about the game and how they were going down to New Orleans. I saw a few heavies land past me but it was too dark to see anything. I did see the 5.50am Houston flight depart and then some United flights arrive from the west coast.
We soon boarded at 6.30, 15 minutes late and I sat down in 17F right next to a small kid and I originally thought “OK I’m going to be watching this kid for an hour and ½.” I was asked if I was traveling alone and I said no I’m not and then I was asked who am I traveling with. I quickly said I’m traveling alone. I apologised it’s too early in the morning. I moved to an open row. I was quickly awaiting pushback.
The pilot came on the loudspeaker and said “well folks if you’re wondering when we’ll pushback, that is the million dollar question. We had a set of spark plugs go bad and we have 1 set but yet awaiting on the other.” I called Patrick and let him know we have a technical issue with the aircraft and that I don’t know anything further but I would keep him updated. About 15-20 minutes later, the pilot came on again and said that everyone needs to get off the aircraft as we are getting a new aircraft. I called Patrick again and told him that we’re vacating the aircraft and that I don’t have any departure information.
I got off the aircraft and I noticed that our new departure time is 8am which had me worried because I wondered if they would hold my connection to New Orleans. I then sent a text message at the wonderful time of 7.15am to Justin and Patrick and Eric letting them know that I might not make my connection to New Orleans. After all of us de-boarded, people wondered about their connections to other places. Many people were able to get on flights to Detroit and Minneapolis. As for us, we had to go on the Memphis flight.
We had an aircraft substitution. From a DC9-50 to a DC9-30. Our flight attendant responsible for economy today was Lorcan. The flight time today would be 1 hour, 17 minutes. We pushed back from E13 and taxied to runway 32R, T10 intersection. After takeoff we turned to the South for our flight to Memphis. We had some light chop shortly after takeoff and it was cloudy the whole way down. I sat there and listened to my iPod and read the magazine and took pictures.
Soon we started our descent, it went from loud to totally silent in just a few short seconds. I thought that the engines were just shut off but soon, the engines grew louder. The weather in Memphis was 38F / 3C and overcast. The temperature when I left for O’Hare was 30F / -1C. We landed on runway 36R at 9.33. I called my mom and let her know what happened. I then called Eric and asked if they held the flight and let other people who were traveling to New Orleans with me that they held the flight. He told me that they did and I was thrilled. I then called my mom back and let her know that I made my connection. The only thing I was concerned about is if my bags would make it.
I got off the aircraft and stood behind someone trying to find out gate information but then I realised Eric said that you’re departing out of B29.

After standing in line finding out what gate I depart out of, I just left and ran to B29. After getting to the gate, I handed the gate agent my boarding pass, and she said “Here’s your new boarding pass, someone might already be sitting in your original seat.” I looked at it and it was 19B.
As I got to the bottom of the jetway, I had a very friendly flight attendant named Kristine smiling at me and then I hear that’s 1 down 7 to go. I then see Eric sitting in First Class. I gave him a quick nod and then proceeded down to my seat. I found my seat and actually sat down in 20B only to realise I was in the wrong row. I then moved to 19A and my fellow seatmate was also connecting from Chicago. I called my mom and let her know that I made it and that the only thing I am wondering is if my bags made it. I also sent off text messages to Patrick and Justin telling them that I made the connection and that I’ll see them soon.
At this point I’m very hungry and wished I had time to get food. After everyone got on, the pilot came on and apologised for the delay. We took off from 36R and had a nice smooth climbout. 10 minutes later, the pilot came on and said that the flight time today is 53 minutes; we’ll be cruising at FL300 as we are now at FL200 and that we had 40 minutes to go. I was very excited!

After a short, pretty smooth flight, we started our descent at 10.45, 17 minutes from landing. The weather in New Orleans was 50F / 10C and scattered clouds with good visibility. Lake Ponchartrain came into sight and the causeway did too. We came in over the city, turned around, flew over the Mississippi River. As neared the airport on finals, you could see all of the downed trees. We landed on runway 1 just shy of runway 28 and we exited the runway at taxiway U.

After I was told that we could use our cellphones, I called Justin and let him know we landed. I called my mom and let her know we landed as well and that I should see if my bags came and call her once I get them.
Justin told me that after we hung up on the phone, our plane passed by him from the restaurant. We parked at gate A1 and I was asked by a person sitting in front of me if I ever have been to New Orleans and I said no. I was then asked well then what’s the reason your down here? I responded, “I’m down here for a week to go rebuild New Orleans. “ I then exited my seat and quickly deboarded. I saw Eric and greeted him. We then went to go find Patrick and Justin. I literally walked past Justin while he was calling my name and so I turned around and gave Justin a handshake and Patrick as well.
I then told them all about my mechanical story and Eric did to in regards to holding the flight for me. We then proceeded to the baggage claim. We all stood around waiting for the bags and I noticed that I saw one of my bags as I had put an Aer Lingus Premier Priority tag on. After that one came out, the other one did too. I was relieved. Justin decided to laugh at me because I considered my bags heavy. I retrieved them off the carousel just fine and then called mom again stating that I have my bags and to have fun.
While just waiting around, I decided to sit on my bags and fell over not once or twice but 3 times. Patrick was polite enough to actually pick them up but I declined his offer. I just got laughed at every time I fell over.
Soon, Patrick ran off to the US Airways baggage claim and another person showed up. Patrick’s college mate, Jannine who flew in from Pittsburgh via Philadelphia to New Orleans.
We then set off to go find out van. The rest is history until Sunday morning.

After a great week in rebuilding New Orleans, it was time to go home. I was woken up at 4am so we can go return the rental car as it was not under Patrick’s name. We left around 4.15 and got there at 4.30. The weather outside was very foggy but 70F / 21C
I attempted to go standby on an earlier flight but I wasn’t able to do it somehow. Which meant its 4.30am, and my flight does not leave until 4pm. I was not a thrilled camper at all. Jannine left us around 5.45 for her 6.20am flight out.
We were soon down to 2. Just Patrick and I. We scoped out the place and bought some gifts for other people. We decided to get breakfast and I had a bagel and cream cheese. Walking around some more, we found a Dallas / Fort Worth trolley in the terminal.
Hours later, Patrick needed to go through security and I decided that I would try and go through with him because I would have a long wait. I got in line with him and when it was my turn to go through, I politely told the security agent that I know that I was in the wrong line and that Patrick and I were just in New Orleans for a week and my flight does not leave until later but if it would be possible to go through and see him off and then walk to my gate. She said it was fine and I was happy.
I ended up setting off security by leaving my phone in my pocket. I quickly resolved that. I put my phone directly through the x-ray machine. We talked some more and walked and at 10.45, Patrick boarded his plane back to Dallas. At this time, I really wished that I had gone standby but I also didn’t want to because I would be flying onboard my first 757-300! Let alone my first 757!
I went to the lavatory and then walked towards my gate when I decided that I should go back and film his departure in which so I did. After his departure on runway 28, I went through security and just sat there at my gate. I spent most of my time on my phone text messaging and going online.
I also browsed around and just had to find time to pass. 1pm rolled around and I decided to get lunch. I decided to get some BBQ Chicken with peach cobbler and corn. I have decided that I miss a good Po-boy and some gravy cheese fries. Soon, I found out that our plane is delayed and our new departure time is at 3.56. It is delayed due to non-scheduled maintenance in St. Louis and the incoming flight is due at 3.36.

The plane landed at 3.26 in old colours on runway 1. Soon we boarded and I boarded at 4pm and the pilot quickly apologised for the delay. 55 minutes is expected to be the flying time today and that we are also going to start our engines at the gate because maintenance asked us to.
We made the short taxi to runway 28 and we took off after an American MD80. I estimate that we took off around 4.20pm. We passed 10,000 feet and I turned on my iPod. The pilot came on and he said that we were passing FL230 for FL280. We were presently over Jackson, MS and groundwise, I-55 up to Memphis. We had 39 minutes to go until landing and that he predicted a 5.23 arrival time. The temperature is 50F / 10C. A big difference from what the temperatures were down in New Orleans. For the last 3 days, it was in the low to mid 70’s! The pilot told the cabin, Go Saints!
Beverages came around and I decided to get orange juice. We started our descent at 4.56 and we were 69 miles from Memphis; 20 minutes to landing. We’d be arriving at gate B29 and the weather was with 5 mph out of the west, 4 miles visibility, and scattered clouds at 1500 feet. We had some light chop on descent and as we got lower, the sun set and the spoilers came up.

I got off the airplane and searched for my gate. I would be departing from B38 and the flight is delayed 20 minutes due to connecting passengers. Next door to us was the daily flight to Amsterdam. I called my mom and let her know that I was in Memphis and that she told me that I should get some food. I ended up getting ice cream.
Soon I boarded and I sat down in 47A, all the way in the back. What a long aircraft it is. The pilot came on and apologised for the delay as we were awaiting connecting passengers. The flight was pretty full. Across the row from me was a mom, her young daughter and her toddler son. I hoped and prayed that he wouldn’t be so loud. The flight time today is 1 hour, 31 minutes due to strong tailwinds which would get us in pretty much on time.
We pushed back and I guess we did some final paperwork preparations and then we taxied to 36L. We took off towards the city and experienced some light chop. It was nice and bumpy back here. Shortly we were allowed to listen to our portable devices and yet again I pulled out my iPod.
The pilot came on and said that we’d be cruising at FL340 and the weather was 30F / -2C with a scheduled gate arrival time of 8.40 in Minneapolis. I decided to get some ginger ale and reading the magazine only to realise that there is 40 minutes left in the flight.
By now I am really tired and I just want to get home. We had more light chop and I fell asleep briefly. I woke up and the pilot came on again and we were 90mi from Minneapolis and it was 28F / -2C. We’d be at our gate, gate F14 in 20 to 25 minutes.
We had some medium chop on descent and it was pretty bumpy. We landed and taxied to gate F14. We parked and the catering truck came up and restocked this plane as it was going to Seattle. I called my mom and let her know that I was in Minneapolis. I also called Patrick and let him know that I was there as well.
I got off my plane and went browsing around. I ended up seeing the Minneapolis to Amsterdam flight as they awaited a few connecting passengers. I then was hungry and then I went to McDonalds and then proceeded to my gate in which there, I was asked by someone if I was awaiting someone from Airliners.net in which I said yes I was.
There I met Jason (N808NW) and we just talked about everything. How my flights went, job wise and what it’s like here. Although it was short, it was definitely fun and I do want to go back to MSP again. I actually did not end up getting a picture with Jason. I totally forgot as I was spaced out.

Jason came onboard with me and noted that I had an old flight attendant. We then shook hands and I wished him a pleasant evening and it was great meeting him. Since this flight was wide open, I sat in the emergency exit row. We had a comical flight attendant onboard.
The pilot came on and said that it’d be a quick 51 minutes to Chicago today. I was asked about my age as I looked too young to be sitting in the emergency exit row so I replied I’m 19 and pulled out my driver’s license. She then walked away and I ate my McDonalds.
We took off from 31L and soon the beverage cart came around and I declined a drink. The plane was pretty cold as I packed my blanket in my suitcase. So I was able to get a blanket.
The pilot came on and said that we’d be cruising at FL270 and that we had about 40 minutes until we get to the gate. We were scheduled to be at E13 at 11.15pm. I fell asleep for a good 20 minutes and then woke up and filmed the descent and landing at Chicago O’Hare.

We landed and then taxied to E13 where I quickly deboarded the aircraft and then walked to the baggage claim only after stopping at JetBlue’s gate and snapping some pictures. My bags shortly came off and I saw the because of the Aer Lingus Priority tag. Jet Blue and Northwest share a baggage claim so there were also JetBlue bags coming off the carousel. I called for cab and it came 15 minutes later. Of course I was not dressed for the weather and was freezing outside.

My cab came and the driver and I talked about my trip to New Orleans. By now I just wanted to get home, he could have driven a little faster! As we turned the corner, I pulled out my money and paid him. I walked in my door at 12.15am. I sent off a few text messages stating that I was home and then went on my computer and talked to some people until 1am. I went to bed and woke up around 9am and got my schedule for work.

Now that you flew my hometown airline domestically, now try their A330s the next time you go to India. I can guarantee you that you will not be disappointed.
My only regret of this is that I didn't go down there and help rebuild a city that made my family famous once they immigrated there from Germany (my great uncle was once the king of Mardi Gras in the 60s iirc). If it was a success, I'd go down there the next time around. If only I didn't have to prepare for my exams the time you were down there.

Great report...and nice pics.
BTW.. I noticed in the pic taken at MSY of the tv with the flight information. I noticed the Manchester flight was going to the UK, and the airline is WN. Interesting!
