My First Flight.

I'm sure there are many of these posts so I apologize in advance.

After being into aviation since I was ten years old (I am twenty now) I decided to take my first flying lesson.

I met my instructor at TOA and we went out to the 172S N881AC. I then went through the whole preflight procedure and then was told to get into the left seat. After the checklist we taxied out to 29L where I was told to apply full power and pull up at 74. I was a bit nervous when I first climbed into the plane and also looking down that runway before takeoff but that went away as soon as we took off.

I turned left and headed towards Catalina.

After circling Catalina I headed towards Downtown L.A. flying over the harbor and then Compton court.

After than we headed towards the Hollywood sign then turned left and went over Santa Monica and made another left where I went over LAX.

I absolutely loved flying over LAX and getting a different look at that airport.

After that I headed over to TOA and made another left parallel with the runway where the instructor took over for the approach and landing.

Not a great picture but I wasn't really concentrating on my photography.

I didn't expect to do much flying this time so I was amazed when I pretty much did the whole thing except for landing. My instructor said I did good job (whew!) and that I could pick it up pretty easily if I want to. I did have some difficulty with setting the trim and using the rudder. At this moment I am more concerned with learning how to talk on the radio/understanding the tower than flying.  pessimist 

Anyways it was an amazing experience and I definitely urge anyone thinking about it to go and do it! I can't wait to go back up!

never been to LA, but am of course famialiar with the skyline. I have to say lucky you... really impressive perspectives youve gathered there. Im actually amazed that with all this anti terror BS going on in the US that you were allowed to fly over such a sensitive area. Thought city centers like this were allready declared a no-fly zone. Anyways, am impressed! Good luck with your flying...

Thankfully not! IIRC, the airspace over downtown Los Angeles is uncontrolled, so you don't even have to talk to anyone to fly there (though there is Class B above, so you have to stay pretty low). And when you do need to get into the Class B the controllers are very accomodating.

Good trip report. There aren't that many small plane reports, but General Aviation is an important part of flying. All pilots have to start somewhere.

Talking on the radio is a whole lot more difficult than people think at first. It is kind of intimidating. It took me a while before I fully would talk on the radio and fly at the same time when I was learning. What really helped me was spending an hour inside a control tower watching them and talking to the ATC guys. They really aren't that scary. And of course if you are nervous about what to say, just speak plane old English and they'll help you out. All that maters is that you say who you are, where you are and what you want.

Most cities do not have restricted space over downtown. As long as you stay the required distance away, then you are fine. The required distance is only 1000ft in populated areas, so you can get very close. I've flown extremely close to downtown Seattle before (but that airspace is actually controlled due to the proximity of BFI). It is fun flying over cities because passengers love the thrill. You just have to be extra careful because there is a lot going on and keep your eyes wide open.



If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!
