American Airlines LAX-EGE On Winter Break

It's my first report, don't be too harsh...lol

Background:
I had been looking forward to this trip for months, as my last flight was September 5th it had been quite some time without flying. I have flown into Vail airport at least a dozen times on American or United so I wasn’t too excited about the flying there. On departure day I started to become worried because a winter storm warning was activated for Eagle County. I started to get nervous when DIA started mass cancellations for the next day. The storm was supposed to hit Vail first, at about 11 at night, right when I would be landing. Luckily though, the storm did not strike the Vail area at all for some strange reason.

I don’t have any pics since both legs of the flight were at night and my flash wouldn’t turn off! And its AA, the camera haters! Big grin

Departure Day:
Since it was an evening flight I was able to sleep in and pack my bag by late morning. My family and I got on the car and were heading to LAX at 4:00 PM. We made it to the “Auto Airport Parking” lot and dropped off the car and was shuttled to Terminal 4 which is the American Airlines terminal. The last time I was in there was in July when I took a short trip to Chicago and the remodel was not complete. I’d have to say that the terminal looks excellent now, and is definitely the best terminal at LAX. We found out our flight was 15 minutes late, but I knew better. The plane was coming from Philadelphia and then Dallas, and had been delayed an hour from Philly so the domino effect was in play. This particular flight had been delayed 1hr + for the past week, so I was expecting a delay actually. In the meanwhile I waited in the Admirals Club with my family which had spectacular views of the apron. I watched American’s LHR flight get ready for departure and by that time I was heading to gate 48A. It was 7:00PM and the plane had just arrived from Dallas. No one seemed upset by the delay at all which was surprising, there is always a few crazy ones…. We finally boarded at 7:35 PM and I was seated in 18A, the over wing exit row. At 8:20PM we were barreling down the runway with all the cabin lights on. I though that was very strange as all other night flights I have taken the lights are always turned off a few minutes before departure. It was a short 2 hour flight and our descent into Vail was quite rough to the say the least. As we were the last flight of the day the airport was practically closed and I just wanted to get to my condo in Vail Village.

The Ground/Flight Crew
The gate agent did not know that American boards with a thing called a group number, so it was a mad rush to the gate. It was first class and then without an announcement everyone was charging the gate. It was ridiculous and completely chaotic. As I got in my seat I discovered how rude the flight attendants were. All of them were complete snots. There was no hello or welcome aboard. It started out as “Get in your seat so we can leave now”. That was there first words. As it was a full flight, it was taking a little while to board and it started irritating the flight attendants. They went on the intercom and started scolding passengers. They just kept saying “If your in the aisle you need to sit down right now and stuff your coats under the seats”. “We don’t have time for this so will you get out of the way and take your seat”. It was beyond unprofessional, not to mention rude. It’s not the passengers fault that the flight was late.

Departure Day:
It was time to head back home and we arrived at EGE at 4:15 PM. The check-in process was smooth but the agents were not friendly. She just kind of mumbled everything and never looked up at us. It was strange nonetheless. Security is a breeze at EGE so that was about a 2 minute process. Continentals IAH flight was delayed in excess of 2 hrs. There were quite a few very unhappy passengers, one of them was a contestant on The Bachelor. She thinks she’s a princess or something and she had a first class seat bought for her miniature poodle. If you watched The Bachelor this past season she’s famous for saying, “I’m not a commoner.” Anyway, the IAH flight left and the LAX passengers started to trickle in. It was about 4:45 and no plane. There wasn’t even a gate agent at the gate. Then it was 5 PM, boarding time, well, it was supposed to be. And there was no one there. No gate agent, no plane. Ten after five someone shows up and she says the flights delayed until 6 PM or so. She said the plane was late from Dallas. Well at 5:20 the flight arrived from Dallas and then there was a mechanical problem with one of the engines. So its 6 PM and there testing the engine and it didn’t seem to be going to well. The AA flight from EWR had just arrived and I was hoping if our plane wasn’t going to make it to LAX they just do an equipment swap, but our plane got fixed at 6:20 PM and boarding began immediately. Now, the one thing that irritated everyone in the gate area was that there were no announcements about the delay. The gate agent showed up after scheduled boarding time, everyone had to ask her when the flight was going to leave so there was this line of 20 men deep, as their wives made them go ask lol, as to when we were leaving. It would have been a lot easier to just use the speaker thing at the podium. The flight crew on the other hand were very friendly and helped people with their luggage and coats. An excellent crew compared to my flight on the way to EGE. Upon arrival in LAX there were several passengers worried about missing their connections. The FA’s told everyone to stay seated upon arrival and let the connecting passengers off first. Everyone followed their instructions which really surprised me! Right when the door opened to the jet way a gate agent went on the intercom and told all the misconnects their new flight information as they all had been rebooked. That’s some good customer service! Rebooked and you didn’t even know lol. Some weren’t rebooked as they had a long layover as they were heading to LHR and SJU. Once I was heading to the baggage claim something weird happened, I think it was an attempted security breach. I had just walked into the main hallway of the terminal and everyone just stopped walking and there was a lot of shouting. It actually quite scared me at first cause security was yelling very loud! They must have got the guy because within a minute everyone continued heading to the baggage claim and flights were operating normally. I got my bag and my family and I hopped on the shuttle bus to our off-site airport parking.


Overall:
American is my preferred carrier, but this trip was not one of the best on their parts. Delays on both flights, rude ground crews, and rude FA’s. But overall it was an ok experience, they got me from point A to B safely and I love 757 so that was great. You can’t let one bad experience change your feelings about an airline forever.

Side Note:
This was my first trip report and even though there weren’t any pictures I hope you enjoyed! I will be flying to EGE this April, ONT-DEN-EGE on UA so I will post a trip report on it. All the flights are in the daytime so I’ll get some pictures as well. Especially of EGE itself, as there aren’t many pictures of the inside of the airport.

Glad you had a better experience on your return flight with AA. I hope your future flights are better and I am glad to hear you are a loyal AA customer. I am retired AA international supervisor now living in Japan as a missionary. Rude agents, flight attendants no doubt does not make passengers want to fly with us. I always enjoyed it when a passenger wanted to speak to me and tell me how wonderful an AA employee was. Those were my favorite calls to handle.
