This is a great pic taken by plane of the beautiful city of Venice
On the left part you can see where it's the airport and where it is under construction (25mtrs under the lagoon) the new subway line between the city and the airport. You can also see the long Ponte della Libertà (Liberty Bridge) where usually the planes pass just a few seconds before landing

This is the first picture I've seen of Venice that's not showing the same old thing (Italian guy rowing some tourists around under a little walking bridge). I'd like to go there, someday.

I flew to VCE on Easyjet from BRS/Bristol last July and what a view! What I remembered most strikingly was seeing a cruise ship near the parking lot area (Tranchetto was it?). It was as though the largest/tallest building on Venice island was actually the ship. It looked very much like a giant white shopping mall towering over the tiny ancient buildings below. I didn't get that illusion when I was actually on the island, just from the plane especially when you are already flying low.

True KEno.. at the Tronchetto Island it's the Port Terminal that you can see even by plane where are arriving the big Costa Crociere's Ships from Genoa. Most of them are 70 mtrs tall, and exept the St.Mark's Tower in St.Mark's square any Venetian Building is taller than 30 mtrs.
Remind that Venice was built 1000 years ago, and all the houses are built on piles on the Lagoon

Venice is a great city! I've never seen it from the air though, as I drove there from Croatia through Slovenia! The first day I was there, I was on the Grand Canal on one of those public boats (it was yellow), and I saw an Iberia MD-80 flying in the distance over the beautiful buildings, it was a site to see! Then the day before we left, we saw a JAL bus. I wonder why JAL had a bus there!? And yes, it was JAL the airline, as it had people from Japan on it, and it had the logo of the airline!!

I think that JAL bus is meant for their passengers who opted for a coach tour around Italy. I remember seeing an advertisement on this tour inside their Winds inflight magazine where you'd arrive in LIN (back then!) then a bus will take you around the country and you fly home from FCO.

I live in Venice, at a few steps from St.Mark's square Regarding the JAL bus, it's a coach organized by JAL for Japanese tourists from Milan. It's a deal now to see to have a direct flight from Tokyo to Venice, while the first of June, Volare Airlines will start to serve daily Shanghai from Marco Polo airport

I have taken many pictures of Venice from the air but can't have them scanned properly. To be honest, they're not in the same quality of this one either.
Beautiful city, great memories. This is what life is all about.

Nice to meet You Hydargos, well, regarding the new Terminal it's according to me fantastic, and the comments made by several visitors in many sites speak alone. An easy airport, but very nice and styled.

That is a very nice pic you posted in the first post. I always like to sit on the starboard side of the plane when I fly back home to Venice, the view is always breathtaking and if it's not too foggy I can see my house & garden on the Zattere
The new terminal is without a doubt a million times better than the old one, truly a pleasure to fly into/out of. It's already starting to become a bit tight for current passengers numbers though! It was built for 6.5 million passengers and in 2003 we already got over 5 million pax. I went up into the control tower a couple of days ago and the director agreed with me on that. Perhaps they will build an extension or something!
Still, it's a beautiful airport and one of the things that make me proud of Venice!

I agree with You AirDolomiti.
In the Province we are currentely discussing about the Master Plan, one more Terminal to build within 2010, the third runway. But 'somebody' would prefer the passengers to take an horse instead a plane.. to protect the environment. So the 2nd Terminal is actually 'blocked' because of those 'people'.. but we are looking to find a solution anyway..

I brought my wife to Venice for a couple of nights at the end of February. It snowed the first day. Then, we saw some dense fog the next day. Still, it was a nice city to visit. I took a couple of pictures of out the window while landing. Even in the low visibility, we could see the city off the right side.
The airport was a nice facility and not too large. There were some good ground transportation options. Since we were staying right across the Grand Canal from the train station, we went into the city the cheapskate way by taking Bus #5. We might have taken the Aliguna water shuttle, but it would have actually taken longer to get there since there was really no direct route to that area.
VCE, did you say that they are building a subway to the city? Where will the subway station(s) be built in the city?

I once managed to get lost in the Marcus square - and being 5 years old and surrounded by pidgeons can be a truly horrifying experience.
I was there a few years ago, staying at one of the camping sites in the upper right corner of the pic in the first post. Really nice place - but god, I wouldn't mind getting rid of the 500.000-odd people walking up & down the beach selling everything from 10-dollar Rolexes to 50-dollar "genuine persian carpets"

Yes Nonrevman, the subway line will be connected at the airport to the new regional underground system. From the airport it will run 35mtrs under the Lagoon directely to Fondamente Nove, at 200 mtrs from Rialto and St.Mark's square
CPH-R, you are right, there are many African immigrants everywhere who try to sell 'Rolex' and carpets on sumer on the beach, but i prefer those guys to work in this way instead 'to work' like thieves. They are welcome to Italy.
