Possibly Easter Island. I recall a/c going there needed to call in about 3 hours out on HF to confirm the previous a/c cleared the runway and it was clear of other obstructions, else they diverted.

Oh, actually I need to add to my previous post: I think Ascension Island in the Atlantic is even more remote. The only scheduled traffic that it sees is Royal Air Force to the Falklands and Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, usually operated by an RAF Tristar, or by an Airbus A 320 from Air Luxor! The distance from Ascension to Brize Norton is 3,796 nm!

Roblondon70 and Bobnwa, you are absolutely right, and upon re-reading my question I must say that I misstated my question. Actually I wanted to know about the most remote airport in terms of the closest scheduled destination. As you correctly point out, geography-wise ASI is close to both Brazil and Africa, but since there are no flights to neither Brazil nor Africa, but the only flights going to ASI are the ones stopping there on their way from the UK to the Falklands, it is remote using my originally intended "definition". @Mozart: Air Luxor has TriStars too (not sure how many of them are actually airworthy now...) and I am sure they would use those to fly to the Falklands rather than their arguably more fancy A320's. Regarding most distant airport: what about Longyearbyen? Or Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka?

Shemya US Air Force Station-out at the end of the Aleutian chain. The only scheduled flight is a FX DC10/MD11 to bring supplies once every 2-3 months. Iwo Jima-Run by the JASDF. No scheduled flights used just a training airfield. The US Marines go out there from time to time for corporal indoc and a history tour of the Mt Suribachi. Checkout my profile, I have some pics of the times I went there. The Islands of Midway, Wake or Guadacanal. Only purpose is an emergency divert field and fuelstop for military aircraft.

Probably Easter Island, There are no alternate airports you can divert to from there in all but the longest-ranged aircraft... All flights to/from Easter Island have to operate to a tightly controlled schedule in order to avoid conflicts. Even within that system, clearence is not given by ATC for a flight to pass the point of no return until the runway is clear - no 2 aircraft are ever permitted to become committed to land at IPC incase the first one fails on the runway... BuyantUkhaa, you're right, Air Luxor has some Tristars, but according to Ascension Island's website they are using Airbusses: http://www.ascension-island.gov.ac/visitors.htm Wonder how they cover that distance? The A320 doesn't have that much range, unless they really load-restrict it, but given that this flight is something like a lifeline to Ascension and to Falkland, I would imagine it to be rather stuffed with cargo. Longyearbyen has BU flights to Tromso, which is a mere 519nm. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatksa has flights to Vladivostok, which is 1196nm. Noise, I guess Iqaluit really feels very distant, but there are flights to YOW, which is 1196nm. Still I'ld love to travel up there once (only done so in my flight sim so far). For me it still looks like Ascension Island.

PER is very far from the nearest international airport (ADL), but there are plenty of other much smaller regional airports in Western Australia. Cheers MinMiester

The Ascension Island website just says the flights are operated by an Air Luxor Airbus - which is correct, they use their A330s. Until earlier this year the contract had been operated for a while by bmi with their "spare" A330. Crosswind, you're right. I couldn't believe it either. The A320 simply doesn't have the range. And on surfing the Ascension website a bit more, they do indeed refer to "Tristar and A330 flights". Now that makes sense to me! Other question, though: why Air Luxor and not one of the UK charters? And what is it like to fly with the RAF as a civilian pax?

Strictly speaking, there is a nearer airport to Easter Island than SCL which is Mangareva (Gambier Island) in eastern French Polynesia, where Air Tahiti flies from PPT several times weekly on ATR7. IPC-GMR is 1406nm apart but there are of course, no scheduled services between them. Also, Kiritimati (Christmas) Island, Kiribati is pretty remote too, it's about 1000++ nm from any airport. I believe AQ used to have scheduled (or was it charter?) services HNL-CXI but not sure if this is still the case. I once read that to fly to the capital of Kiribati (Tarawa) from there, one has to fly to HNL first, then to Majuro, and finally change to Tarawa. That's involving 2 foreign countries just to travel between the two ends of the same country.

What about Alert, NWT? I guess it would be Nunavut now, not NWT. At 82.5° N 62.3° W it is so far north and away from everything. Although it really only gets military scheduled service.

By applying Etops 60 to the GCM cant you just pick out the most remote airport, which i estimate to be that one west of south america. Of course i doubt GCM has all the airports and i dont know whether that particular airport has a sheduled service. Edit: And now i realise that is IPC [Edited 2004-12-14 04:38:52]
