British Airways Plc canceled 50 flights at London Heathrow airport's new Terminal 5 and brought in U.S. courier firm FedEx Corp. to help reunite passengers with about 20,000 delayed bags.
Not sure if we plan on shuttling an a/c up to LHR or transferring the misplaced bags to our MAN or STN operations.
Well I find it hard to see what else they can do. They're going to compensate, they're shipping all the bags to their owners and they have very publicly apologised.
Any other ideas on what they can do to make it right?
It might have been a mess but at least they have admitted they cocked up and not shunted the blame to BAA, which IMO and I think a lot of other peoples, are the real culprits in all of this. T5 is their terminal, BA just operates from it. BA made some considerable cock ups but BAA made several worse ones.

If you look for a "sorry" on the BAA website, you'll have a long and fruitless search. Their only xcuse so far seems to be that BA let too many staff have go airside before T5 opened, thus causing problems at the security checks
British Airways is sending thousands of suitcases by lorry to a warehouse in Milan because its staff at Heathrow are unable to cope with the backlog of at least 20,000 bags that missed flights from Terminal 5.
Bags belonging to passengers on domestic flights are being driven to Manchester and Scotland, where they will be sorted, screened and dispatched eventually to their owners.

That's the smartest thing BA's done all week.
FedEx is better at getting things where they're going, on time, and reliably, than just about anyone else. BA should just step aside and let FX do its work - good call.

If BA had done it the Ryanair way and allowed people to take 10kg into the cabin, and no checked bags ( for flights of up to three hours) there would be no problem.
Solution: BA moves out of T5 and Ryanair moves in.

I remember I use to use Fed Ex to deliver our out of town Deliveries when we had a mishandled baggage report. It was always cheaper than have a delivery courier do it.

This isn't the first time. Last year when BA had the big mess at T4, they also used FedEx . I waited for a week for my bags to arrive at NYC. I felt really bad for the BA staff at JFK who were not well-backed up and had to deal with planeload after planeload of irate passengers. Next time you see someone in a BA uniform, be kind, and offer them a drink.

According to BBC Breakfast News, BA will send the bags to Milan and, assuming they don't get lost in transit, will be handed over to a "courier" and redistributed, either by air or ground as appropriate, from there.

The onbly reason sending this to MIL can be that there is enough capoacity to handle the mess. Still, if I would be one of the passengers whose bags are "in transit", the idea of having this go through MIL would irate me. Especially knowing how Italian customs "works".
This is at least 20 truck loads if not more and theoretically the 20000 bags fill 4-5 MD11s, just for the volume. 20000 awbs have to be issued, reading adresses from adress labels, thaqt alone is at least 2000 man hours. Getting the bags duty free through customs at their destinations is another headache, it makes a difference if passengers walk through the green channel or if bags arrive as cargo.
