Quoting Redngold (Reply 14): I have to wonder about this Maurice Carthon guy, the Browns offensive coordinator. I've been hearing grumblings about him ever since the first game of the season, and now I'm starting to understand.
He's a one-note joe |
If you watch the Browns, on almost every single first-down play, Carthon calls for Droughns up the middle. It's reminiscent of Belicheck's "Metcalf up the middle" back in the early 90's. Defenses key on that so easily, that it's never going to fool anyone.
And THEN, when he finally decides to get fancy, he does so at the worst possible moment. Case in point today: Browns have a 3rd and inches, at or near the Red Zone, after a offsides penalty on Carolina. What's the best call? The shortest distance between two places is a striaght line, so let Charlie Frye sneak it, right?
NOOOOOOOOOO! Carthon calls a REVERSE to Braylon Edwards, who tries to throw a Touchdown pass to Winslow. What happens? The ball is incomplete, AND the Browns get called for holding on the O-line. So now, instead of first down, deep in Carolina territory, when you're down 14-6, it's 4th and 10, and you have to kick a field goal. And your best chance to change the 'Mo goes out the window.
This guy has got to go.
