AIRLINERS.NET CREW
FOUNDER

Hello all,

This little quiz section is something that's been suggested many times in the past but not implemented until now. It's simply a proof of concept and not fancy in any way. We are simply testing it and would like your views. Is this something that you would like us to make something out of?

We could add top lists, time limitations and other features - please do make suggestions.

Again, be warned: This is simply a test section in early alpha status. With that in mind, please try it out and let me know what you think of it, what we should change, add etc:
http://www.airliners.net/quiz/

Thanks,
Johan

First of all, thanks for the hard work. I think that is a very cool thing to add to airliners.

I went through some 60 photos and I liked it. The photos have to be watched out, one of the photos has the type written on the side: 737-700. I'm sorry I didn't take notice of which photo it is to tell you, and tried finding it again but it's kind of randomized.

---

The images are just the right size and load quickly. However, the selection of the correct option may be enhanced a bit more. The two row display is not easy to be seen quickly but I'm not sure what it is. Maybe a thicker font could work better, or a three row display. Just ideas

---

Some of the options involved were for example "747-400" and "747-..." on the same photo. Probably a "half-point" thing could be included, getting half point by selecting "747-..." and full point for "747-400".

---

The time limitation could be a good thing. But the exact time would be hard to think because there are different degrees of complexity with each photo. A higher complexity quiz could be implemented for those who have higher experience on these things. It could include engine type recognition.

---

That is all I can think of right now. In general I find it very amusing and a well thought idea. I will keep looking to see If something new comes to my mind. Thanks again to the crew for their dedication to making a.net superb Big grin

Just had an idea.. Maybe at the start you could choose how many questions you want to be asked or have an unlimited amount.

I went through 105 photos ( from witch I got 86 right) and I like it. But its getting tiring after a while, because it's a bit long. I like the idea that you can choose your amount of pictures.

I thought about something else, where is this bound to be put, in the forums? Will it be only for airliners.net members, or for visitors as well?

In my opinion it would be a nice recreational thing to put in the chat room and in the forums, or beside the poll on the front page. What do you think?

Just got an airport overview.. This is an aircraft quiz so all photos under the airport category shouldn't be in, in my opinion  Smile

Creating a separate quiz for airports would be good Johan  Big thumbs up

-About the top lists, I don't think it's a good idea because it is possible to cheat by looking for photos in the database... For those who are sad enough to do that  Big grin

But if there is a time limit, e.g. 15 seconds per photo, then it could work  Big thumbs up

Josh

Maybe a limit on the reaction time? That you get a certain amount of time to get click on an answer.

I have 6 times hit the correct answer and hit it say it was wrong, but that it was the right answer?

Also in one case, i was given the option of Embraer EMB-110/111 Bandeirante and Embraer EMB-110 Bandeirante
when the aircraft in the picture were clearly 110s.

I have to say that this is great, and for just an alpha idea is excellent!

This could be really well developed. Just did around 15 questions for a bit of fun. Ultimately, it would be excellent if difficulty could be structured, such as choosing between fighters, GA and commercial aircraft, since asking about amphibious planes on a second question, or BBJs on the 12th is somewhat daunting!

But well done - I'm impressed!

269/330

Maybe a varying degree of difficulty can be introduced. Whole pictures of airplanes are easily identifiable. Perhaps you can include an option to allow users to select pictures which only show part of an airplane. Examples could include an engine cowling, a propeller, part of the landing gear, a nose section or a winglet. You can make the answers tougher by including multiple variants of the same aircraft. Example... B737-200,300,700 etc...

I used to be part of an Aircraft ID (ACID) group during my university days. We were involved in national aviation competitions against other schools. Really fun, I loved it!

A fantastic learning tool for the young. Though I got 70 of 70 right before giving up, I was challenged 2 or 3 times.

My suggestion would be to eliminate the what type of Boeing, Airbus, etc. from the question.

I say introduce it so those who are not old airport bums, like me, can learn.

I think if it's possible the choices needed to be narrowed down...for one photo of a CX 747-400F the correct answer is listed as "747-400 (AL-1)" and I think it should be narrowed down to "747-400F" if possible...

Very nice idea indeed!

I like the idea of being able to choose categories i.e. comercial, military, general aviation, etc.

Some of the ones for me were a dead giveaway, such as a 777-300 in house colors. Big grin

But some of them were harder too. My second question had a pic of a few guages of a first officer's panel of a 747-300. It didn't show any engine guages or throttle quadrants or any other majorly obvious giveaways. I'm no pilot or flight simmer, so this wasn't a very easy one for me. I got it right by process of elimination, though. I thought this was a great example of the kinds of things I'd like to see on the quiz. It wasn't too easy, yet I could still figure it out, and I actually had to think and spend time on it to get it right, and it also allowed me to learn.

I really think this could be a cool feature of a.net. I like the idea of maybe having a time limit and holding competitions or having a "high scores" list or something. Possibly something in a user's profile showing their all time stats for the quiz?

One thing I think this deffinately needs however is a difficulty level. My interests are mainly in commercial aviation/airliners, so some of these were waaaay to easy. I had pics of things like 727s, 737s, MD-80s, MD-11s, things very easily identifiable by most on this site.

Again, great idea, and with a little work I think this could be a sweet new feature to Airliners.net!

There was a problem for me - There showed a photo of a C-5, but the choices were 767, Z11, and like a whole bunch of stuff... I clicked one, and it said WRONG and didn't provide a correct answer (yes I know what a C-5 looks like)

Also, the aircraft type is mentioned right on the side of the A/C....

It's got potential.

There was one photo of an A-310 that had A-310 painted on the side of the aircraft, made it a little easy.

I would also change the phrasing from, "What Boeing/Airbus/Douglas is this?" To "What Aircraft is this?" The former just gives too much of a hint.

Also I would consider getting rid of the terminal or runway photos with the Null choice.

I like that idea of having a simular version of airport overviews.

I took the quiz and ended up with 19 out of 20.

It would be good to have a competition to see who was the best at recognising planes. Like have a competition out of 50 or 100 questions and then at the finish enter your user name and password which would then record the top 10 scorers.

Some questions were a little easy, especially one which said what plane is this and you have a choice of 737/747/767/707 or something similiar and it said on the side of the aircraft 737.

One thing I just noticed when trying out the quiz again, you can go back and change your answer after you get one wrong. This would obviously need to be fixed before implementing any kind of competition.
