Hi all,
As I wrote a few week ago, Airliners.net has added a new feature to the site called "Image similarity search". It uses advanced algorithms to compare image features like colors, contrast, edges etc. It was created in cooperation with Profs. James Z. Wang and Jia Li at PSU and is based on their similarity search engine SIMPLIcity.
As far as I know, our database of close to 800,000 photos is the biggest online implementation of a content based image retrieval system, which makes me mighty proud
I am happy to announce that the similarity search feature has been improved in two ways:
The search engine now uses a higher detail setting and should produce significantly better results for some queries.
A new page has been created where you are now able to use any image on the web or on your local disk as a query image: http://www.airliners.net/similarity/
Try it out and let me know what you think! Remember that this is cutting edge science and work in progress. Getting a computer to perceive similarity between images the same way as you and I is extremely difficult and the base of much scientific research.

From what I've gathered after a few searches the algorithm seems to have improved significantly! The results now looks a lot like the query image, which is very impressive! Will try it out more when I have the time.

I tried this new feature last week and it indeed is very impressive. We can now all make better comparisons between photos before uploading our own images first. All in all, a job very well done Johan. I'm looking forward to more innovations on your website
