My day started off pretty hectic. I had misplaced my credit card at Pizzeria Uno on Tues evening and didn't realize it until Wed morning when I attempted to pay for breakfast. Upon calling the restaurant where I thought I had seen it last luckily they still had my credit card unfortunately since I had some last days work business to tend to before my afternoon departure back home I would have 2-2 1/2 hours to go to the restaurant to get my card, head to the rental car drop off, shuttled to the UA check in counter, and catch my flight.

As luck would have it the agent at check in counter informed me that my original 3:05 departure SAN-RNO via SFO (plane change )would be delayed til 6:00pm. She offered to rebook me on a UA to LAX then on to a Horizon Air flight LAX-RNO, I declined though and made my way through the security checkpoint within 5 mins and subsequently made my way to the Starbucks store in the Terminal where I decided to get some food for the flight, and a grande coffee of the day.

I sat down thinking I had all the time in the world to spot aircraft and relax for a while however once again as luck would have it I was halfway through eating my Foccacia sandwich when an announcement was made for me to report to gate 13 (UA gate) so I packed away my food and headed to gate 13 to speak with the gate agent who made the announcement.

The gate agent informed me that I would be rebooked on the flight at this gate instead of SAN-SFO-RNO I would be traveling SAN-DEN-RNO (Must have been some serious delays in SFO). I also realized all the sudden this would be twice the overall mileage that I would receive as a Mileage plus member on my original trip, however I didn't bother to think about the seating assignments because I was just happy to get home early instead of a midnight arrival. As I entered the plane It just happened that I would be sitting in extreme steerage right between a aisle and window pax.

A caveat of US 737's are that they don't normally use TV's. Being a UA flight however I would rely on UA's channel 9 radio for entertainment. So I listened to the ATC transmissions until DEN.

Well as I have previously mentioned the UA flights don't even provide snack service (peanuts or pretzels). However TED offered snacks. The service on UA is average but because this trip was work related it's a moot point. If I had to fly cross country or leisure travel I'm going to fly CO from past experiance they were the best in the US. However I was impressed by TED those A320's are roomy and the FA's are friendly as well.

My next trip will be on DL in July should be fun RNO-SLC, SLC-DCA & DCA-ATL, ATL-LAX, LAX-RNO on Xjet. Hopefully I can see the new and improved DL like I have been hearing about.

Nice pics... Good Job

Without having a rental car, would there be a way to get from RNO to South Lake Tahoe? If I did rent a car, how long of a drive is from RNO to South Lake Tahoe? What are the elevation differences?

(Sorry, just planning a trip!)

I'm not saavy at the local transportation froem Reno to Lake Tahoe as I live an hour east however I seem to remember seeing bus service (Public and maybe Greyhound), and shuttles running from the airport and Reno. However I did copy some links of useful resources that may help there seem to be enough varieties in travel.

Driving to South Lake Tahoe may take an 1 1/2 hours total depending on youre driving. To reach the Lake itself you can drive up highway 431 (MT. Rose highway) and see the Lake within 30 mins w/o traffic. then you have to drive from the north shore of the Lake down to South Lake Tahoe. You can drive south on 395 and reach Carson City then go west on Hwy 50 up the mountains then follow 5 down south to South Lake Tahoe plenty to do though. Heres my pics from Lake Tahoe last weekend http://picasaweb.google.com/Mike89406/OurLakeTahoeDrive.

Reno sits at 4500 ft and Lake Tahoe the lake itself is at over 6,000 ft however the drive around the lake varies from 6,000-8,000 ft.

The thing is, I live in Santa Barbara, CA and am going to South Lake Tahoe (The City), and am on the fence to whether I want to fly or take the nine hour drive...

Yeah I hear you. If you drive I heard dring north on 395 from Cali is faster but boring and a lot of desert but I dont know since I never tried driving from Southern Cali.

It seems that there are plenty of shuttles to take you to the South Lake that would be in my opinion the best public transportation. But personally I would rent a car its really not a bad drive. However depending on the timeframe you plan on spending at the lake that might make a difference.

I know from experiance the flight is short with 1 plane change over usually.

Try this for a ground transprtation from RNO. http://www.renoairport.com/transportation/shuttles_taxis_limos.php

And this looks promising http://www.southtahoeexpress.com/ It appears they go to one of the handful of casinos in South Lake Tahoe.

Loved both parts to your trip. Well written and nice pics. Nice that UA helped you get around the SFO delay there. Did your A320 board with the two-jetway setup DEN has? If so, how was that boarding experience? Very quick or not so much? Interesting since we don't have those in ATL  crowded

Nice! That should be a fun trip. When will you be in ATL? I'll be departing on the 13th. Was just on DL at the end of May and thought it was great. They've improved quite a bit from what I've noticed.

Thanks again for sharing the reports

Hey, that looks to be the one! There is a 90% chance I will do this. Thanks a lot for your help.

Yes UA was really accomadating getting more pax from that flight delay to the flight I was on, however San Diego is a real friendly city I have noticed in general.

Yes actually they did and it was very quick indeed.

I leave here July 17th for the east coast and fly back to Reno July 25th. Unofrtuanley I have a 3 hr delay in ATL 1130 ish til my 1430 departure. I fly a MD-88 form DCA-ATL and I'm flying a 764 to LAX which is probably in a different concourse.

I'm hoping that I wont have to go through a security checkpoint if I do have to move to another concourse.

Excellent TR. I like that the screen at the gate shows the equipment used for this flight.
The fruit salad showed on one of your pictures, was it free or buy on board ?

cheers: DALelite

p.s. looking forward to your upcoming trip report on DL
