That shape is called a NACA Inlet... it is used for varied reasons on varied aircraft (and non-aircraft) applications. It is popular because it is simple and creates very low drag.

There are companies out there that make various "currencies" to sell to people who are a third tricked into thinking its "real" money, a third excited about whatever the currency "commemorates", and a third thinking they're getting a collectible. RE: Steering The Aircraft, How It's Done?

As David L said, many aircraft are equipped with a tiller, commonly only on the captain's side but sometimes on the FO's side as well. It acts as a steering wheel for the nose wheel on the ground. On the CRJ, the tiller provides approximately 70 degrees in either direction of nosewheel steering whil...

On many aircraft types, once the hydraulics are turned off, the rudders are able to freely move. If there is a strong wind from one direction, it is able to move the rudder to full deflection. You'll probably notice that when one aircraft has its rudder deflected, all the others in the line up also ...

The reason why you first saw the increase in airspeed is that a common microburst is a rapidly descending column of air. When it hits the ground, it spreads out radially in all directions. The CRJ APU, and those on many other types, self regulate their bleed air extraction. On the CRJ, the load control valve will momentarily make drastic changes as to the amount of air being bled off the APU. This will cause often cause a quick flame to shoot out of the exhaust. In the CRJ-200, our best endurance speed (depend on weight/altitude/temperature) is usually in the ballpark of Mach 0.60 / 230-240kias. Thats painfully slow for any kind of revenue operation.
