According to the FR history, G-XLEI returned to JNB while G-XLEB is the delayed flight in question.

G-XLEI arrived back at LHR yesterday morning as BA54.

I had a look. Lufthansa, Swiss and Air France are all more expensive than BA and VS. KLM is cheaper but arriving at LHR at 15:00 means a day lost of the trip so that's out.

Actually no. Back before covid the route was a strong performer. Bologna and the surrounding areas are important business, technical and industrial areas.
