I grew up near Bedford and remember the idea of turning RAE Thurleigh into London's third airport. The NIMBYs wrote all over rural bus shelters 'London Airport number three, go and stick it in the sea'. They must have been early adopters of Boris Island.

If they want premium long-haul passengers they will need to upgrade the passenger experience. I hadn't flown from there for years until I passed through in January and was shocked at what a run-down and crowded dump it is. Not as bad as Luton, but bad all the same.

My shortest was a positioning sector from SXF to TXL - 16 miles. A/C was unable to get into TXL the night before and diverted to SXF. We took it back to TXL and on to LHR the next morning. Longest is a relatively boring KEF-YYZ with spectacular views of Greenland.

Just remember not to venture too far from the aiport. Get on the DLR or get a cab but DO NOT venture in to Canning Town to get the railway. They have an answer for unattended luggage there. They steal it!

A breath test is not used on pilots. The 9 microgramme limit is too small for the machines to accurately measure. A blood sample is taken by a doctor and the sample analysed at a laboratory. That is why he has been bailed.
