I live in Ft lauderdale a little North and west of the airport and two nights ago the winds changed and it was raining ash. The smoke was heavy and thick showing up in my outdoor spot lights. The runway config changed at least 3 times that evening and I saw some very unusual approach patterns.

Yes for sure. When I worked for AA I used to fly several routes on a regular basis. I used to pull up the service standards in the computer for the flight. It was very obvious when a crew did or did not want to work.
