I just replied to email Lee, the crash gate from where the Thai A300 was taken backs onto the beach, there is a Bhuddist temple nearby which can be seen on Panoramio pictures in Google Earth. The light at that spot is best in the afternoons.

Most, if not all, of the cross channel hovers were built at the Hovercraft factory in Cowes on the Isle Of Wight, and across the water at Lee On Solent is the Hovercraft museum, they have a an open day every year and the next is 24th-26th July 2009.

The Hovercraft service from Portsmouth to the Isle Of Wight still operates, it sometimes can be suspended if it gets too windy but other than that it is a very reliable service. As for the ride, it feels just like being in an aircraft during a take off run-except it goes on for seven minutes!
