The strobe light switches on the AA Airbuses have 3 positions. OFF/AUTO/ON. In Auto mode, they illuminate upon liftoff and turn back off at touchdown. Normally, they are left in the auto position.

I'm under the impression that the reason most of those are parked there during the day is that many of them fly to Deep South America in the evening after having arrived in the morning. They get most of the maintenance done during the day for those long flights.
