My presumption is that the MEL-PER and PER-MEL legs will be treated as continuing sectors ("tags") rather than domestic connections and so they will depart from and arrive into MEL as international flights. Therefore passengers to and from MEL will go through customs and immigration there...

Living in Brisbane I would love this option personally. I am not a fan of DXB or EK....but I love Qantas and prefer them over the asian carriers. I love it! When I first saw it the missing arms on the roo looked a tad odd initially but the more I look at it the more I like it. QF doesn't ferry 747's between MEL and SYD, the 747's are rotated: LAX-MEL-HKG-MEL-LAX. If anything I can see MEL-HKG going daily 747 in the future given that it doesn't seem like QF isn't interested in adding more frequency.
