In the US, airport codes cannot start with N, W, or K. N is reserved for the Navy, W and K are not used to avoid confusion with FCC broadcast call signs. That is why Wichita is ICT, Newark is EWR, and Kansas city is MCI.

Also, the increased amount of LCC/ULCC service at DTW with the rise of NK in particular likely causes more and more leakage to DTW with the fares/connectivity/nonstop options. When AA and BA were approved for their trans- Atlantic joint venture a few years back many speculated that either BA would be back in DTW or AA would fly DTW to LHR with a 757. I for one thought it would happen. But since it has not happened yet, I will not be holding my breath.
