Flew in 1978 on this service. Was via Cape Town. Was 707 to and from South Africas and then an aircraft change in Rio.
Flew 747L RIO/NYC and NYC/RIO 741. Remember the inflight movie was a screen that came down over the aisle.Cabin crew
were very senior on the 707

It appears to be a CRJ 200 ER - as usual the media have it wrong.
This is the type normally used on this flight but the crew count sounds more like 737

The 163 pax and crew including one infant evacuated by slides.One passenger was injured and taken to hospital
