I wonder if its the fare type purchased, I know at my former airline, if you bought the cheapest fare you wouldn't even get a seat assignment until boarding. This didn't start until the Low Cost Carriers started....

The merger with NW created what looks like DINO (Delta in name only). Northwest fleet management took over in ATL and DL switched from a reliable Boeing (Supporting US manufacturing) to Airbus. Northwest was only ordering Airbus before the merger and this bias transferred to Delta after the merger....

As a side note, this was a 757-200, and there were at least 30 people on standby that didn't make it on the plane... I can understand 5-10 people on standby, but 30+? Why waste that many folks time? Tell them to show up for the later flight or book them on another airline. Or am I missing something...

JNB is hot and High, I believe a late departure is to maximize load at night. SAA's JFK and IAD flights used to leave around the same time.
