I also agree that the US could have planned for the shuttle replacement a bit better. I do not like the fact that we now have to depend on someone else to take us along for a ride to space. We could have been almost ready to go with a new program by now instead of talking about a decade from now.

I guess it depends on what the operator wants to keep.I have got a few airplane ready for the storage facility and all we did was paint our name off and made sure that all of the rotable parts the airplane came with were back on the aircraft before it left the rest was handled by the storage company...

I know some stuff is sold off in bulk to surplus dealers. The airline I work for has only changed interior and exterior one time since I have been employed but most of our old items were sold off or recycled or trashed and depending on the items the employees were allowed to take items home.
