My favorite freeway sign is right by that Sassafras Street/San Diego Airport exit. It's the one that says, "Cruise Ships use next exit."

There definitely were some based in Miami in the second half of the 1980s, as well as a small number at LAX (2?) flying to SFO and SAN a few times daily. This lasted only a short period of time. The 737s on the SAN run were replaced by the Dash 7.

This is a sad day for me. I used the airport frequently when I lived in Berlin and always found it convenient. Have you tried looking at Departed Wings? (A separate outfit from Departed Flights). The site administrator is slowly building out a section with articles on the defunct airlines of southern California. You might find something there. There are also some nice photos from his slide collection.

Putting on my "Prophet of Doom" hat, I would speculate that an overdue economic slowdown will catch up with SAN and its airlines in the early 2020s, leading to some significant cuts in service after a long period of increase. I suspect SAN will lose some frequencies to airlines' hub cities...

It will be interesting to see if AA's SAN-JFK cut is related directly to the MAX grounding. AA has removed the MAX from its schedules until 8/19/19 and so the question remains if the AA flight(s) might return after August. I'm a little doubtful, but I wouldn't rule it out.

Thanks for posting that data, bb. I don't think it's very promising. Most of those cities are long-thin routes to non-hub cities that airlines will be unlikely to jump on.
