Regarding Apollo 12- the lightning strike caused an electrical shortout to some systems and the entire mission was in doubt the first couple of minutes of the flight. A NASA software engineer came up with a solution i believe and the problem was solved uneventfully.

Jump to postThe flaps certainly do make a very strange kind of sound when deployed. Everytime one flies over my place i can tell it's a 146 because of the "whirring" sound it makes when the flaps come out.

Jump to postIt's interesting that the 737NG is better able to compete with the A320 series when the A320 is not even a new plane. The A320 first flew in 1987- i'm wondering are there any differences between a 1987 model A320 and a brand new 2004 model? Have there been any improvements or is it all essentially s...
Jump to postGreat Western? Who are they?-travel agency? I thought Emu Airways flew the 1900? And how come the fare is only $25?
Jump to postSo they have some DC-10's and 747 classics in their fleet- big deal. At least they have an interesting fleet- not just the usual boring 747-400 like most INTL carriers have. And the DC-10/742 are a minority in the fleet anyhow.

Jump to postThat is so annoying!!! Why can't they get it right? Their technical advisers must be totally useless. If they're gonna make movies with planes in them they can at least get it right. The worst culprits are by far American movies, most European movies on the other hand seem to get it right.

Jump to postAll you guys whining about RJ's- get real! It could be worse- you could be on a turboprop instead. I only wish we had RJ's over here.
Jump to postIn Australia we don't use the term "Heavy" at all. Even 747's just use their callsign and that's it. E.g CX 105.
Jump to postNot using reverse thrust saves fuel? C'mon reverse thrust is only used for a matter of seconds anyway and the fuel usage would be negligible and probably next to nothing anyway on an A320. The more likely explanation would be 1)Noise restrictions and 2)FOD to engines 3)save wear and tear

On a side note does anyone think the outcome of this would have been different had it occured at daytime instead of 8:30 at night? Jump to postTo me it would feel unnatural to land in an airliner without using reverse thrust. It's something you get accustomed to feeling- the wheels hit and then alsmot instaneously the reverse comes on and you feel the deceleration and hear the engines roar! Every landing i've ever been on in an airliner ha...
Jump to postMan that's crap if BA have to do that. Airports are supposed to be noisy places and now they aren't even allowed to use reverse thrust? That's crazy. I love it when they go to FULL reverse in a 744 and the whole airport trembles- it's great!

Jump to postWell it was an "incident" and a serious one at that so i think they were right to bring it up. Jump to postConsider that the last major accident involving a DC-10 was United 232 in 1989(engine fault not the DC-10's fault)- and the 10 was in service right up until a couple of years ago, and still is in service with cargo carriers like FedEx it's pretty darn safe.
