Cloud Minimums - Visual Approach

Another - sort of - Q300 related question! I recently had a very bumpy descent into New Plymouth - home airport. I am rather wondering how bad the conditions have to be before an airline (not just Air New Zealand/Air Nelson) will throw in the proverbial towel and turn back - or divert to another air...

RE: Engine Notes When Landing - Q300

That must be it - prop sync turned off, and both of them at max rpm. Then, wheels down, flaps down, and ... Q300 down soon afterward. I'm impressed with how fast the aeroplane can stop with a full load of 53 (including the crew). New Plymouth's runway is rather short - as usual in New Zealand's regi...

Pardon my ignorance - but what is beta or disc mode?
Also - just out of interest - does the Q300 have any unique checks or procedures during descent?
The sound described by WN700driver is what I trying to get across, like an 80s power cord on a very low pitch.

Engine Notes When Landing - Q300

Just wondering if anyone can help with this tech question...

About three miles or so from landing, a bit before the landing gear is lowered, the sound of the engines change - to a very low throbbing note. Is that because the revs are so low, or has the propeller pitch changed instead... or both?
