All else being equal, it's better for fuel economy to use your least efficient aircraft on the shortest routes. Which is generally why you'll see BA 747s on the US East Coast, and not in the Far East.

However, all else isn't equal, which is why there are plenty of exceptions.

Rest assured that whatever lies Ryanair decide to tell the media and their paying customers, these cancellations are wholly and 100% due to a crew shortage. They were short when I left over two years ago, and over a thousand pilots have left since.

Yes, they did. But that's not what the OP is talking about. Thomas Cook Canada was operated by Jazz, who used six 757s leased from the UK arm during the Winter to take Canadians down to the Caribbean and Central America. They operated for two seasons, after which the deal was scrapped.
