From what I hear (and not confirmed) is that they are removing the mid cabin lav, and installing the new slimline seats.

This gives them room to add more seats. They will also get the E+ modification at that time.

There was nothing wrong with the engines.

There was some damage done to some wires in the E&E bay and a failed re-circulation fan. This is what caused the smoke. System shed or shut down components as it is supposed to and the smoke quickly cleared.
