If an aircraft does not sell for years, you better give it up. The 757, while popular in the US, failed on most markets because it was to heavy - this design fault was the reason for the success of the A320 which was the better 727 replacement.

But I do not understand why anybody wonders this can happen. It is a known fact that the so called security has an efficiency of 30% to find arms and explosives, 7 out of ten tries succeed.

For sure Boeing knows that this would be the answer to the MoM - earlier to market and cheaper, not less cost effcicient, slightly less fuel efficient. We now have many airlines with a mix of A332/A333 - I expect most A338 operators to be the same airlines, using the A338 as addon or A332 replacement where the range is needed.
If you do not need the A338 range, take the A339.

Laser scans maybe. The company is doing all kinds of aerial surveys, including search fpr pollution etc...

Since it is in line with the runway in Egelsbach, could also be calibration of the landing systems there.

There were drawings of twin L1011 - I think they never got beyond the drawing board since they would have been heavier than the A300 - and there were no engines around to power them.
