Regarding the surprise A350 order from South America, I'm gonna bet my $$$ on Aerolineas Argentinas. Don't they still have some A340-600s on the order book? They can cancel them and replace the order (which doesn't seem likely to fulfill anyways) with A350s.

El Al started HKG in around the mid-90s. Before the 777s came along, some of the westbound flights made technical stops in interesting places, such as Tashkent. (All this if I remember correctly.)
