F-16s For The Italian Air Force

Mon May 07, 2001 11:39 pm

Hello,
this already an old news in Italy but I think it is pretty fresh for this brand new forum.
The Italian Air Force, during the 1999 Allied Force Campaign over Kosovo, realized that its Air Defence instrument was no more responding to current threats so decided to look for an interim fighter in order to fill the gap untill the first EF-2000 TIFONE Squadron will be Combat Ready, in 2008.
After some months of comparison between the F-16, the Mirage 2000-5 and the renewal of the leasing of 24 RAF Tornado F.3, the Air Force finally opted for a leasing from the USAF of some F-16s.
The deal involves 38 machines: 30 F-16A-15 ADF (Air Defense Fighter), 4 F-16B-15 and 4 more for spares.
The fighters are former Air National Guard ADF variants, capable of firing AIM-7, AIM-120 and AIM-9 missiles.
So Italy becomes the 21st Nation to use the best selling Fighting Falcon / Viper.
The first examples are expected for the beginning of 2003.
I am happy of this decision and I can't wait to see an F-16 with my national colours but I want to add this:

LONG LIVE THE STARFIGHTER!!!!!

Long live the Starfighter! While the bird is definately a beauty and one of the last true "Gunfighters", Italy will definately be better served by the General Dynamic's F-16As and F-16Bs. Now, don't jump on me and say Lockheed Martin. These are A and B models, and were therefore produced during the General Dynamics control of the line.

Don't worry CX747,
I am not going to jump on you because I know you are right.
You are right also when you say that Italy will be better served by the F-16s.
Italian Governments should have replaced the Glorious Starfighters 15 to 20 years ago, with F-4s, F-15s (very unlikely) or F-16s. Anyway, in a few year period Italy will be one of the most powerful Nations in Europe with EF-2000s Typhoons, Tornados, AMXs and later hopefully JSFs.....

What type of F-16s is Italy preparing to receive? Are they A and B models? Also, if they are ex-Air National Guard Aircraft, that would mean that they were placed in storage. Are these airplanes coming from AMARC?

Italian Air Force will receive 30 F-16A-15ADF updated to the Falcon 2000 programme and 4 F-16B-15ADF in Falcon Up update. 4 more non updated examples will be used as spares. Engines will be the upgraded PW F100-PW-220.
I don't think those aircrafts will come from the Amarc but directly from ANG reserves after they will undergo the rehabilitation process.
Italian F-16s will join the following groups:

12° and 21° Gruppo (Squadron) of the 36° Stormo (Wing)

23° Gruppo of the 5° Stormo

18° Gruppo of the 37° Stormo

In the 36th Wing they will replace the 24 RAF Tornado F.3 whose leasing will expire in 2004 while in the other Squadrons they will replace F-104ASA-M Starfighters.

Actually Italian Air Force evaluated the Fulcrum considering either new built or second hand examples. The IAF Chief flew on SU-27 and MiG-29 (as well as on a lot of other Soviet and Chinese built fighters).
The problem with it is Nato interoperability.
And of course it is still far the time when a Western Country, Nato memeber, will buy its fighters from Russia.

Hey Cobra27,
I'm sorry for you but all F-16 Squadrons will be located in Southern Italy and Sicily. Since the end of the Cold War the threat for Italy doesn't come from the North East anymore but from the Balcans and from South.
36th Stormo is based in Gioia del Colle, Puglia (South East tip of Italy) While 37th is in Sicily.

Are you sure that the aircraft will be coming directly from Air National Guard Units? I didn't think that the U.S. Military used the F-16A any more at all. I might be mistaken though as the statement only covered the U.S.A.F. and reserves. I would have thought that even the ANG would operate the F-16C/D now.

They will be leased US surplus aircraft. That means either ANG or AMARC (ANG replacing As with Cs. As would normally go to AMARC).
All may be handled through AMARC to ease processing.
I wish I were flying
