Create Your Own Air Force "The Propellor Years"

Fri May 25, 2001 6:42 pm

Ok guys, back when Johan first started this forum I put up a "create your own airforce" topic. Well guess what it's back....

The same basic rules apply...You can get your aircraft from any source. You are allowed to mix and match types. You are not allowed to use "paper" aircraft. You have to use aircraft that actually flew and had a military version of it. You can have a max of 200 aircraft.

You must have one type for each of the following catagries.

1. Fighters
2. Transport
3. Trainers

And new for this catagory. You must have a bomber type. Either level or dive type.

And the other big rule for this catagory. Piston aircraft only. No jets allowed.

Well How would I set up my Air Force?

48 F40-4 Corsairs......This was a real close, I was comtemplating the decision to go with those or Hawker Sea Furys or Tempests for a while.

24 AD-1 Skyraiders.....Or the famous Sandy's from Nam. A heavy hitter that saw action in Korea too.

12 Boeing B-50....Basicly B-29's with P&W engines.
24 Junkers Ju.88....Medium Bombers....Just a lot of utility in that design

12 Bucker 181 Bestmanns....Primary trainer
12 North American SNJ....Advanced trainer
12 Avro Ansons....For training/liason work. The Candian version with the P&W engines

6 Douglas C-118...Long range transport
6 Convair C-131...Medium range transport
10 Fairchild C-123...Medium range tactical transport
12 DeHavilland Canada...DHC-3 Otter....The miltary designation escapes me

12 Fieseler Fi 156 Storch's...Utility/liason

12 Consolidated PBY Catalinas....Marine search/Rescue

Well that finishes off my list....I hope you all have fun with yours. Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Just of ther top of my head without to much thought, and not to select too much as you have!

I hope these are all piston powered, I'm sure if they are not I'll be told

Fighters
60 Hawker Sea Fury

Attack
48 B26 Invaders

Bomber
12 B50

Maratime Reccon & SAR
12 Martin Mariners

Transports & Utility
6 C124 Globemaster
12 C119 Flying Boxcars
16 DeHavilland Beaver

Trainers
12 T 6 Harvards
12 T28 Trojans
10 Airspeed Oxfords

Prehaps another version of this is aircraft that became operational in the 1950's?

OK...how about we bring this back up but make the participants specify the era, country of which they are the new SEC/MINDEF, and their geopolitical needs and purpose for a military.

I'll go first on this.

I put together a plan for Venezuela if I were advising the new president of that country and needed to prepare to defend my borders because new oil fields had been found near the borders just offshore that are disputed by its northern neighbors, who

Keeping in mind the needs and budget of this country, but the expanded threat from the new oil finds the VAF would need to increase the size of its entire military, especially the Air Force, in the following manner.

The F-16 squadron would be reinforced with AM/BM aircraft purchased from Belgium and the Netherlands, who are reducing their stocks. The remaining F-16s would be given the MLU. There would be two twelve aircraft aquadrons based centrally putting flights of aircraft at strategic points to stand for alerts. They would be equipped with AIM-120 as well as Sidewinder and Penguin missiles. These would replace all F-5 and Mirage aircraft in the inventory. The diminished numbers would be made up for by the additional capabilities and range of the newer aircraft.

Another 8 AMX-T's would be ordered to complement the ones already on order, they would serve dual roles as lead-in strike craft. They would fill one squadron of 20 aircraft. THey would serve as both trainers and attack airplanes. Primary weapons in addition to internal cannon would be 70mm rockets, MK82's and cluster bombs. Napalm and mines could also be carried.

There would be a need for a light strike/COIN/Patrol bird that could be met by the Brasilian Super Tucano equipped similarly to the SIVAM aircraft. They would be equipped with the Pirahna missile as well as minigun and rocket pods. Twenty of these would be sufficient to replace the OV-10s in the inventory. If the budget did not allow for replacement these OV-10s would be modified to D standard.

Transport requirements would be met by adding 12 C-27J's and four extra C-130's (preferably K models if any are left) with refuelling packages. All remaining C-123s in inventory would be eliminated and G-222's would be sold.

One last addition to the Air Force would be additional C/SAR helos. There would be a need for more specific transport and attack craft, but those should be under the army. C/SAR should be an AF function and perhaps the purchase of AS532 Cougars would be appropriate.

OK...Just putting out there. I'll do one for a prop age air force later.

I found it when I was thinking of doing my own thread on the topic. When I found yours and decided to go with it, instead of doing a new one.

There really is no such thing as a new idea any more, just variations on a theme.

L188 the US Army designation for the Otter was U-1A
Beaver was the U-6A
Caribou was the CV-2 (USAF changed it to C-7 because they didn't do STOL
Buffalo was CV-7 but they only had a couple of the prototype aircraf for a while.

Never flew the Otter in the Army, but later flew a Mexican-registered one, that had never been on floats or skis. Drew a crowd whereever we went.

Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

Hello all...I'm new here - just signed up 2 days ago. Looking forward to some fun @ this site. Prop aircraft are my favorites! About building an airforce...let's see...

Fighters: 20 P-47's
20 P-51's
20 F4U Corsairs
20 F6F "Hellcats"

Bombers: From my user name, one can surmise there's only one choice here -
40 B-17G's

Transport: 20 C-47's
30 C-130's

Trainer: Don't know much about training aircraft (perhaps some of you folks
out there may "educate" me), but here goes...
20 SNJ's
30 AT-6 "Texan"

As you all can see, I'm a bit "old school", with WWII being one of my favorite research subjects. Look forward to "meeting" people, and having some real interesting chats.

Here's my list, chosen mostly just for aesthetic reasons:

Spitfire Mk XIV- Fighter (I'm also partial to a mix of Yak-3 Yak-9's here)
Spitfire Mk XIX- Recon
Dornier Do 335- Night Fighter (20 were at combat units by VE day)
P-47 Thunderbolt- Fighter Attack (before there were F/A's)
B-25 Mitchell- Med Bomber/ Attack (any plane with a 75mm gun has to be on this list!)
B-24 Liberator- Hvy Bomber
C-124 Globemaster 2- Heavy Airlift
C-7 Caribou- Tactical Airlift
AT-6 Harvard- Trainer (just to confuse people who call them Texans  Silly )
Grumman Goose- Rescue
Can you hear me now?
