...and Just What Is A BC-17X Supposed To Be?

Sat Jun 16, 2001 4:43 am

Heya,

If you go into Boeing's website and go into the gallery and go into the military menu, you notice a plane registered as the BC-17X. If you click on one of the photos, you get what looks to me like a C-17 in Boeing's colors. A few years ago, before the Boeing takeover, this same plane and that same picture were called the MD-17. Is this thing A) real? B) any different from the C-17???

Yes, it's just that, a civil C-17. High civil certification costs may be a barrier to sales, but Boeing and the USAF are pressing the DoD to buy 10 as a reserve transport fleet, but US freight carriers which would operate them have yet to show any interest.

True......it's the model marketed as a civilian variant. Was talking to some FEDEX mgmt folks at Millinton (Memphis) last month, and they aren't really interested in it just yet. They had just contracted a bunch of MD-11's instead. Shame.....I was looking for a retirement job too!
